...HTFU seems like appropriate and socially acceptable advice to folks *not* involved in sport, regardless of time, place or context...

At Work
"Having a problem with the Henderson account? HTFU and get it done, Jenkins!"

At Home
"You can't decide what color to reface the kitchen cabinets? For G-d's sake, honey - just HTFU and choose! I'm starting to feel like you don't want this bad enough!"

With the Kids
"Afraid of the dark at bedtime? HTFU! Listen - when the lights go out there's only gonna be you and the Boogeyman and you can bet yer a$$ he's training right now!!"

OMG  -  I did that to my kids -  we were skiing last weekend and my younger son (10) was complaining about something and I told him he needed to HTFU!!!!

lmao!

I said something similiar to my 5 yr old niece.  I set up a mini-tri for her and she started to get frustated putting socks on wet feet in T1.  She was in the huffy stage, pre-tears...I yelled, "suck it up!  There is no crying in Transition!"

Here's one for the list....you're always in some stage of dampness.....sweat, pool, or from one of the 3 or more showers you've taken for the day!

Yep - HTFU has entered our family's vocabulary too, at least mine and my husband's.  It has been mentioned in regard to our kids' actions (scared of dark being one of them), though never said directly to them!

When you're cleaning the multiple inches of white $%^ off your car that accumulated while at the gym doing a tempo run and swim and your biggest concern is that it will be yet longer until you can ride outside again

You know you're training too much when you don't feel the need to tell anyone else how much you're training...much less post about it...

man, I'm the inspiration behind this therad and I can't think of anytning new since I did the Foxworthy imitation last night!

Oh wait--the mail man knows your route, as do any other Fedex delivery people, the trash pick up guys time

All the geezers out walking their dogs ask "how many miles today?" when they see you running (again)

You no longer wash anything BUT work out gear, undergarments, towels and whatever you wore to that job you do to support the tri habit

You shower 2-3 times a day, but not once at home.

In the morning you decide if you need your small gym bag or big gym bag.

Edit - 500th post, sweet. I got me a blue star.

...though you know it has multiple meanings, and can be used in many contexts, whenever you hear the word 'transition', it will now and forever have only one meaning for you.

Even though your freinds are having a party you look forward to going to bed early on a Saturday night so you can get up and do your long run first thing in the morning.

You pack your bags for a business trip and decide you need the bigger suitcase to accomidate 8 sets of workout clothes, 9 pairs of underware and socks, 2 sets of running shoes, and oh yeah .......a few sets of work clothes (and a toothbrush).

This thread is great!  I have a few to add....

When you kiss your boyfriend/girlfriend and they ask how the pool was even though you swam 10 hours ago.

When you start thinking about your next training session before you have even finished the one you are doing.

And finally, when you are a college student and it is Friday night and you have gotten asked out by a cute guy and you choose to not go out with him because you know you have a big workout in the morning and you know you need the sleep more than the date.

When you swear your kids' soccer coach is stalking you because he passes you (in his truck)  EVERY weekend on your long run...even though you NEVER take the same route and NEVER see him in the same spot either!

Your swimsuits are wearing thin, literally, and you figure as long as your white butt cheek isn't showing, you've still got some time left.

When at 6am your restless because you are sleeping in by 3hours and getting up at 6:30--on the weekend!

Re: HTFU in everyday life:

Those responses are classic! I knew I wasn't alone! So you all know, I showed my fiancee the responses to my post as proof that I'm not the only one with this crazy excessive obsessive uniquely effective approach to life management!

Then I worked out.

Twice.

When the cardio room monitor doesn't even bother reminding you that there is a 30 minute limit anymore!
When you google the instruction manual for the treadmill, and figure out how to bypass the 60-minute automatic shutoff.

When your friends and family replace "hi, how are you?" with "So what distance did you do today?" as their standard greeting towards you.  And of course they always say it in that tone of voice that lets you know they think you are completely insane, but they kind of envy you.

Yeah, with separate sections for each sport so you aren't hunting running gear from the bike shorts and have a place for all the sweatshirts, race tee shirts and bathing suits!

When you now have 2 gym bags: one for strength training days, one with all the swim toys

Quality time at home is on your bike tainer with the family watching tv (and they think Coach Troy is annoying as much as you do but you're doing a SpinErval anyway)
