Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Redknight - 2008-05-03 5:07 PM wow. talk about new. I had a heck of a time finding the group again. Any way as I said I am new to the sport. Any advice that you can give to someone who has never done a tri would be greatly appreciated. I have about a month to go before my first one. Average workout for each section ..... run about 7.5K. (4.8 miles). 20 -30 k (12 to 19 miles) bike and I can manage a slow 600 meter swim. Also what is the easiest way to get into this site to check out the messages. At the bottom of the post is a checkbox to get e-mails when new posts are made. |

Champion 9060 Charlottesville, Virginia | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Well I just signed up for my first Olympic. November 9th in Miami, both my wife and I signed up. I have another sprint on June 1st and another one in July so should have plenty of time to focus on November. The olympic will also be my first OWS.... Going to an OWS seminar next week and the person that is doing the seminar also teaches in a lake not to far from my house so will try and get some work in there. Any thoughts, tips for going from Sprints to Olympic? The swim is in a lake and is a bit shorter than most olympics at only 1k, the Bike and run distances are what I am allready training to so they shouldn't be so bad. |

Member 31 | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL So, my first tri is in exactly a week (next Saturday). I went to the local tri store and bought some elastic shoe laces, a band for the chip and a band for the race bib. (I'm sure all that stuff has technical names...) It was fun to talk about the tri and get some advice and new gear. So, for the ladies...I practiced a shorter tri on Thursday, and I realized a problem. I thought my bathing suit would be enough support, but it wasn't. The lady at the tri store said I could wear a sports bra under my suit. Anyone had experience with this? |

The only tip I have for you is to get a few Open Water Swims in before you do your tri. There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE FROM THE POOL TO THE LAKE/OCEAN/RIVER, ETC.... |

For your question, I am no female, but am married to one...... The majority of people that I know wear a "TRI SPECIFIC" top, I believe they have a sports bra built directly into them. I do realize that there are small pockets on the side, but if you have a wetsuit no big deal, they are block. Without a wetsuit, there may be a little drag, but it is VERY MINIMAL...... My 2cents from a dude, who is married to a TRI FREAK! |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Yay completed first half mary today, Avenue of the Giants. After being sick for 3 weeks after being sick for 2 weeks...... I did pretty good for me. I finished overall 157 of 810 and 15 of 27 in age group 40-44 with a time of 1:52:53 pace 8:37, which is about 13 minutes off my practice time for the same distance at home. From lack of practice time due to illness over past 3 months I had a little less kick off the finish line and perhapse a little flat for the last 3 miles, but overall I was very happy with my time. It was a nice cold 50 F with a cold mist and a lite to moderate breeze depending on where you were, made for a chilly start, but no worries about getting hot during the run. I will be officially shooting my shoes and changing brands soon. When the came out with the new version of the same shoe they screwed it up and the left one gives me blisters under my blistesr (3 new blisters today). I am not sure whether this shoe is just defective of whether they screwd the design for the entire line. Anyway bed time for me I'll check in tomorrow, race report is up if ya wana check but pretty much put it all up there for ya. |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Lauren, I don't wear swim suits because they really chafe when riding and running. I wear tri shorts and tri tops or tight fitting running/tank style tops. Make sure you test it out in the pool first because what may feel like a tight top can sag and cause a lot of drag in the pool, let alone baggy and therefore useless during the bike and run. The tri shorts are nice because they do give you some padding on the bike, without acting like a diaper in the pool.. Pearl Izumi has some decently priced stuff. But don't I remember you said you had a tri suit? JUST BE CAREFUL WITH WHITE TOPS!!!! Edited by tahrens 2008-05-05 3:41 PM |

I come up there a ton for work, and will be up there running the North Face Endurance Challenge next weekend. I love swimming in Lake Padden, and running out from the park... It is one of my favorite workouts!!! We will have to get together when the weather get's a little warmer!! Sounds good, I'll be here. I've never swam in Padden, but have been around the lake many a time. What brings you to town for work?

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL My first tri is on June 8. I've spent some bucks and bought some good running attire and tuned up a good road bike. I have decided to only go with regular swim trunks. I know they will create a little drag . Do you think for a short 400 swim that I should consider a different suit. Also I have not bought a lot of the technincal equipment like the heart monitors etc. Given that I am just starting out should I be looking at getting this kind of equipment. I was thinking about getting a chip which will go into my shoes while I am running but that only uploads to my ipod and doesn't give me heart rate etc. |

I was thinking about getting a chip which will go into my shoes while I am running but that only uploads to my ipod and doesn't give me heart rate etc. I would absolutely get a pair of tri-shorts for this simple reason - there's no way I would like to ride and run in regular swim trunks. The tri-shorts may not give you a big advantage in 400 yds in the pool, but there will be a HUGE comfort advantage to them on the bike and run. I would definitely spend the $40 or so on that. Remember - there's nowhere to change in the transition area. The chip and all is optional, and will certainly help you see how far you've gone, but there are plenty of people who don't use them. If you don't use it for training, I don't think you need it for a race. If you decide to start spending more as you get more into the sport, then you can look at different devices and see what you would really like. |
