Looks like it could be a hot one, accuweather saying high of 89....

Might. melt. Ugh.

Actually spontaneous combustion is more likely than melting. I have such an inefficient internal cooling system, that working out in anything over 75 is torturous for me....blech.

Sounds like the morning will be okay, temp-wise.  I don't like the heat either.

Even though I've had family living around Phalen my whole life, I know very little about the area or the lake.  Sorry.

I can be a total spaz on race morning and would almost surely forget to meet up.  However, if Kelly remembers I know I can find her.   I'll be wearing my full black tri-suit and have I shortish hair and probably in my Crocs until I get the wetsuit out.

Jeremy and I'll be there.  We're driving up in the morning, so who knows how spazzed out and hurried we'll be.  He's been sidelined with a shoulder injury for 2 weeks and isn't sure if he can swim.  He tried 100m this morning and it didn't go well.  Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for you guys.

btw- those who don't know me, I'm shortish and wear a flowered tri top with brown shorts/ Promotion wetsuit with neon green/ silver Trek Equinox

Hey Rowdypaint,

If you do not want to drive up that morning, go to priceline.... I put in a bid for 26.00 per night and ended up at the extended stay suites (2 star) in woodbury.  Stayed there before, nothing fancy, but clean, has a small kitchenette and is just east of the race.

Good luck !!

ps...I will be wearing a Polar tri top.

I think everyone should dress exactly like they are in their avatar, and then we'll recognize each other better. Emily should be particularly easy to find with the umbrella, and of course rowdypaint on the horse shouldn't be too hard to pick out.

Looks like it could be a hot one, accuweather saying high of 89....

Hmmm... Ok, I guess I'll be the guy in the pfd in a canoe.

No, I'll be in an orange top and tri shorts - no wetsuit for me. Tall, nearly hairless on top, and probably more awkward than need be.

I'll head to the little patio area to see if I see anyone. I'm going to bike the course tomorrow. Good luck everyone I don't see.

I saw Randy Fulton setting up the transition area this afternoon. It is in the grass right between the beach and the road. He said that bike-out would be from the grass, over the curb and onto the road. He said that there was also some confusion about the long course/short course split last year and that it should be more clear where to go and when for tomorrow. Lastly, since the map isn't very clear, the eastern turn-around... after you are going east past the transition area, you will take the first left turn and then it looks like 1/4 to 1/2 mile north along the east side of the lake before you turn around.

I didn't swim or run, as my stomach wasn't feeling great, but I did most of the bike course (with the exception of the eastern turn-around). This is not going to be an easy bike course. With the exception of the eastern and westernmost mile and a half or so, there really aren't any flat portions of the course.

There are two big "hills." The first is between Edgerton and Westminster. It'll be a good descent, but climbing up will be kind of a pain, not because it is steep but it is kind of long. The second is that strange 's' between Marion and Idaho. This hill is a steeper climb, but relatively short. I would call it an easier climb than the first one. The descent is trickier, though, since the turns are kind of sharp. I, for one, will not be in my aero bars going down that hill. Unfortunately, for both hills, you start climbing again as soon as you get to the bottom of the hill, so it'll be kind of hard to carry over any extra speed you got from the descent.

The road conditions are fair. Watch out for cracks and holes, but it could be a lot worse for a city street. That's about all I've got for a course report. See you tomorrow morning.

Oh. Would anyone be interested in maybe going out for pizza after the race? Savoy is decent and not too far away from the race.

Thanks for the course info.  I didn't think it would be a fast course, esp with all the turnarounds.  Oh well.  I'd be up for pizza after.  Food is always a good thing.

ok, i'll head to the little patio too before the race, try to talk to some people or another idea, if someone wants to mark their transition area (streamer, bright towel or something) before the race, then we can come over and talk/set up T1 by each other -- tell you what, i will put a bright orange swim cap over my aerobottle before the race starts, i will probably show up to the park around 6:30 or so.

oh, and i am down for pizza too!!

Hey folks. I just wanted to apologize for bailing after the race today. I was beat and not feeling the best. I also figured the chance of actually finding any of you would be slim. I did see and visit with BikerGrrrl for a little bit before the pre-race meeting.

Hope your races all went well. Somehow (I really have no idea) I pulled off a 3rd in my age group despite an absolutely abysmal run. I'll have to get in touch with Randy to see if he'll mail me whatever it is that they gave to the people who placed.

That was a good race, but dang it was kind of hot on the east side of the lake. I'm looking forward to reading race reports.

After seeing Kelly for a minute and a quick dip in the lake, I bailed too.  That run was BRUTAL.  I am definitely not doing that race ever again.  I cannot believe I ended up 7 of 11 in my AG, I swear only 2 people finished behind me in the whole race!  Strange.  Anyway, that was a very hard day.  I felt like crap too.  Well, I still do.  I suspect the burn I earned contributed to how I felt.

Congrats on the placement, Aaron!  That's awesome.  I'm so glad we met.

Nice to see you Kelly and Patti.  Nice to meet you too, Craig!  What a coincidence.

Nice to meet you Emily, I didn't think I'd meet my first BTer while we were actually running. Will have to hook up sometime for a run, bike or swim.  Interesting distances on the race but I enjoyed it. Hope everyone had some kind of fun out there.

Did anyone get a good distance on the bike leg? I think the swim was actually pretty close to accurate.....

My computer said just a bit over 23 miles and I reset the computer as I was running out of transition and checked the distance before I left transition after packing up.  So it was pretty short.

The run must have been short too, considering how much I walked and still ended up with a "normal" time for myself.  Although while I was "running" it, I would say it felt long.

My bike said 22.6 miles for the international. They needed another water stop on the run. I bailed after the bike was given away. because I was going camping with the family. I will do my race report later but my time was 4 seconds faster than last year. Swim 4 minutes slower, bike 5 minutes faster, and run about 45 second slower. I felt like crap on the swim, and the start of the bike. I felt good on the run until lap 2. Then it was walkin time.

over 3000 pictures last time I saw it. If they don't have it searchable, set aside some time to find yourself. I have to say though, some of the pictures of people going around the corner coming down the one hill are pretty good. I like mine and as much as I've been wanting a decent picture of me riding, I don't particularly want to pay $10 for it.

Didn't want to be aero going down that hill not knowing where the next bump/pothole was.

Is anyone racing Saint Paul this year?  I'm thinking of doing my first Oly at this race.  Good or bad idea?

Read some of last year's race reports.

My opinions are in my report.  IMO, the Waseca Tri (Aug 2) will be a much better option if you're free that weekend.

Thanks, I read the reports.  I guess I was hoping someone would talk me into doing it!  It's the only Oly left in August that I can really attend.  I will be out of town on the 2nd.  I may do the turtleman instead even though it's not quite an olympic distance.

Hey Dave - Since you've read the reports, and are aware of the potential issues, then I guess there's no harm in encouraging you.    However, if you are concerned with actual distance you should know that this particular race is not *quite* Oly distance either.   Despite how it's advertised, the bike is short by about 2 miles and I am frankly skeptical of the run distance.

From what I hear, Turtleman is a superior race.  If you wish to challenge yourself with a longer distance, and can still register for that, I would recommend that one instead.

Great, thanks for your help.  There are about 100 spots left in the turtleman, so I'll have to decide soon!
