Nursejennie - I am planning on doing the Nice Ironman in 2010.  I have done one half ironman (the California in Oceanside in 2004 that nearly killed me!!!) and want to do a full ironman (for which I will be better prepared) and have picked Nice because I have a sister that lives in the area.  It would be nice to communicate with someone with the same race goal.

Congrats on taking on this challenge, and you ABSOLUTELY can do it.  I started in January of 2005 at 306 pounds.  Did my first sprint later that year in May, followed by a few more and an oly.  My first 1/2 mary was  one year after I started, in January 2006.  My first (and only, so far)  ironman was in June 2006.  It is doable if you keep your focus on the goal and have fun with it.

Good luck!!

I'm game. Intentions are a 1/2 IM this year and then a marathon in late fall and then if all goes well IM in 2010. I'm looking forward to making strides this year as my longest events to date are an olympic tri and 1/2 mary. Good Luck to everyone.

Alrighty, I left my couch 9/1/07 and have done a 5k, 10 miler, half mary, full mary, Sprint Tri, Oly, HIM and am signed up for the Vineman 8/1/09.  It is time to suck it up and get some tough training done.  Who else is attempting a first IM this year?

Sounds pretty cool.
I remember watching the Hawaii ironman '96 and thinking what it would be like to finish a race.
Now, a few years later, i'm thinking if it's possible at 44 years old.

So how do you plan for something like this?

Hey Paul

if you still have room in your challenge i will more the willingly join it. (right now i am majorly new to the whole triathlon thing). but with a little time and effort am sure i could do it. and yes the Hawaii Ironman 2013 sounds good. (i will be very impressed with myself if i make it to the qualifiers).

This is great. Count me in!

First year of tris this year, but it was Ironman that got me interested to start with. That's the goal for me and five years is a good timeframe.

I started back on 4/15/06 -- I went running for for the first time in15 to 20 year. I've dropped may be 30 pounds.

Well, I just got a slot to kona for my first Ironman. So I guess I'm in on this challenge.

I guess that's one way to do it...

I think I'm in on this...  I just finished my first sprit last weekend and am eyeing Lake Placid, in '11 or '12...

My build up plan is looking like:

'09 sprints and a couple Olys, plus a late 1/2 mary

'10 sprints, Olys, and an end of year HIM

'11 early Full Marathon, and 2 HIMs.

'12 Go Time IMLP

Of course this is all bound to change as I train and learn more about this stuff...  But you get the general idea...

This is the kind of challenge I need.  I started doing sprints last year.  I'm shooting for a 1/2 IM in 2010 with a full IM in 2011.

Hi everyone...
I'M IN!!! I started doing Sprints last year (did 3) and have really stepped it up this year and will do my first Oly later this month (Philly Tri) and I'm doing a HIM in mid September. Never in a million years did I think I would even CONTEMPLATE an IM, but now I'm thinking about it and this challenge will put me over the top! I haven't targeted an IM that suits me, but will begin looking for one to do in 2010.

2008 - 3 sprints
2009 - 1 sprint, 2 Olympic, 1 HIM
2010 (plan) - 1 sprint, 1 Oly, 1 HIM, 1 IM
2011 - Kona? Ha Ha

I was close to 250 lbs and a couch potato, but triathlons have changed my life. The longest I've ever stuck to an exercise program was probably 2-3 months... Now I'm going on 2 years in triathons. I LOVE IT!

I've already completed my first sprint this year and will send a brief write-up of that in another post, but I'd love to hear of everyone's race stories up to this point. Good luck everyone!

I’ll be right there beside ya all!! I have yet to do any triathlons; my first will be a sprint on Aug. 1st. I just started training a couple weeks ago so I think this will be the perfect challenge for me. Smile Sounds like fun!! Laughing

Aloha folks

I'd like to play in this one to. I have been up and down for a few years trying to get triathlon permanently in my life. Well real life and injury conspire against me but... I am not going to let doc tell me I can't! So 5 years (whilst blowing old goals out of the water) seems fine to me to get me to an IM in good health.

I will be making some rough plans soon in my blog and I am still suffering with PF but it definately is not going to stop me.

A year and a half ago I said enough, 250 lbs and not in good shape.  I started a diet and exercise program and promptly blew out my ACL.  I had ACL replacement surgery and chugged on.  I finished P90X in April and sai OK, now what?  I decided Triathlons sounded fun and began in April.  I have a sprint in a week and a half and another in August.  After that I plan on doing the Florida 70.3 HIM nect May and a full ironman in September 2010....can I do it?  I say why can't I do it!!!!  I am going to keep an eye on this thread and I want to hear more from you all!!!

I'm committing myself to the challenge.  Started in March, have done three sprints to this point.  My IM will come next sept at the Rev3 IM at Cedar Point.  This is somewhat local for me and for some reason has motivated me to jump to IM a year early.  Some a little more than a year out, I'm in.

Vineman full im distance completed 8/1/09 with a time of 12:16:29, 1 year 11 ish months off the couch.  A truely amazing experience, no walking on the run.  I am down 40 pounds from the start.  It is a long journey, but well worth doing.  It definately makes the list of 5 best days ever.

If anybody has been following my blog then you will know that it's been a difficult year. Injuries aside, I've not changed my mind and the birth of a new baby has certainly refocused my mind on this challenge.

Keep upto speed with my progress at;

http://projectpotato.blogspot.com/

If you have a blog then let me have the details so that I can support you on the challenge. Maybe we can all support each other!

It would be great to hear from you all...........................are you winning?!

Hello all! Well, I'm half way there! I completed my first Half IM yesterday. It is one of the toughest things I've ever done and I can't believe how sore I am today! There were times during the race that I thought I would never finish. I had severe cramping during the last half of the run because of letting myself get dehydrated. But I pushed through the pain and finished. When I saw my wife and kids about a mile and a half before the finish, that was all the motivation I needed. It's definitely as much a mental game as a physical one. It's amazing the things that go through your head when you are pushing your body to the limit.

About a year and a half ago, when I signed up for my first sprint triathlon, if you would have told me I'd complete a half Ironman, I would have told you that you are crazy. But this sport has a way of pulling you in and not letting go. I can tell you that I am a different person that I was a year and a half ago. I LOOOOOOOVE THIS SPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!
