With th new site design, it seems like there are a lot more images to load, little spacers and the like. I don't know if that would make it appreciably slower, but nonetheless, load times are still slow. Even with a DSL, browsing the forums is not as fun anymore because of delays in loading, can't scroll screen content to see text before pictures are done loading, etc.
As far as "anchoring" the forums, that looks better, but n all the work you put into the new headers is essentially unseen. If all I do is browse the forums, I'll never need to see the links/ads, etc at the top. You've circumvented your own solution.
It seems like it would be much more elegant to simplify the stuff in the headers, consolidate menu choices, group this into similar places
(e.g. my training blog & BT BLogger are similar topics that could live on the same page, like a like to BT BLogger from my training blog page
), move ads off to the side, where they would actually be seen MORE, because they'd continue to appear as you scroll down the page, and not just be ignored out of habit OR because you've "anchored" the forums to start below your new headers.
PLease don't take this to sound like I'm complaining, like I said before, I am a former cartographer, software developer and website designer, so I am sensitive to critique, but also to design and usability. I don't think it's a matter of the paying & non-paying customers "getting used to" the changes, but making the changes as user friendly as possible. Crisp icons do not mean a site that is easier to navigate.
OK, I'll stop. Ron, if you address these and just let me know that they are low on the priority list, I'll be happy, otherwise, I may keep squeaking!
