Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Go get your own 'winter bike commuting' thread you knothead! ![]() goalie - 2009-01-23 10:40 AM Whine?!?!?!! This week has been great. Even with the call I picked up, I got to bike to work 3 days this week!!! I have a feeling the ride home tonight is going to be a little windy though. |

![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have seen a biker on Cedar Ave. (south metro toward Farmington/Northfield) twice this week. That can get really windy out there with the field. I couldn't believe it. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I assume those folks don't have another transportation option. When my husband was young and poor he would ride his bike or hitchhike (!) to work. And he lived somewhere in Minnepolis and worked in Arden Hills. Yikes. Or so he tells me anyway. If I were in that situation I'd either move or get a new job. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last year I was all about running outside, but this year I'm having a hard time getting motivated! It's not so much the cold, but the crappy snow removal on the streets and the sidewalks. I hate finishing up a run and having to rinse a lb of slush off my shoes and having to wash mud off my tights from the knee down. It's just exhausting and I'm picking the treadmill more because of it. Am I just lazy, or is the slush actually worse this year? |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nope...the slush is worse this year! We've also gotten a bunch more snow this year as well! Most of the time, it seems like we're left wondering if we will even be having a white Christmas. I'd heard too that Ramsey County decided to start plowing more and salt less (due to cost of the salt and environmental reasons). So far, I haven't seen more plows! Not sure if Hennepin jumped on that bandwagon or not. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hah! Don't even get me started on the mess that is St. Paul. The side streets in St. Paul are still totally and completely white. Not surprised they are using less salt, since the intersection by where I park is glare ice. I heard they only plow when the snow reaches 3 inches, so if that's "more" I'd hate to see what they did (or didn't do) last year. Seriously, it's a mess in St. Paul. I think the snow plowing goes by city, not county, by the way. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You 'big city' folks have your own plows. Folks here in the country have a blend of County and township road maintenance. Sidewalks in WBL are a mess since they plowed all the road slush onto them. Nice. BikerGrrrl - 2009-01-23 12:28 PM Hah! Don't even get me started on the mess that is St. Paul. I used to see him EVERY DAY, rain, snow or shine when I worked for ConAgra. He's got a full beard to keep him warm, though.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I see at least one person each day riding across the highway 110 bridge over the Minnesota River. It's great to see, but I'm certainly not at the point where I'm ready to do that. I'll agree with the snow removal. I'm sick and tired of the slush everywhere. It sucks. |

Screw five weeks of this crap. I retract my earlier enthusiasm now that I am (barely) thawed out from my 10-mile ride home.....straight into the freaking wind. The sweat on my arms froze on my base-layer UNDER my shell on the way home. My baclava was completely covered in ice. Thank god for snowboard helmets and goggles. Stupid state........ |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was really amused at the race today at the frost all over people's faces, eyebrows and lashes, skin, and clothing. Watching the clouds of breath rising from the few hundred people in front of me at the start of the race was kind of cool too. It's cooler being at home with a hot cup of coffee and watching cooking shows with no plans to go back outside though. |

It was cold in Rochester too, but I was inside restaurants, a movie theather and a high school auditorium all day. |

I was initially disappointed that they cut the race distance in half, but considering how my legs were performing I know that I wouldn't have been able to run a full half marathon yesterday. It was cold and uncomfortable at times, but I'm glad I did it... and the race shirt and coffee mug are pretty nice. |

I feel like I was ripped off now cuz I did a few for just the mug (and bragging rights). |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It turns out that I have to go to San Diego for a week in early March for the SIR conference (Radiology annual scientific thingy...). I'll have a bay-view room at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, and it should be 70-something during the day. There is a light at the end of the tunnel....... |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() March is a long way away. I'll be sitting in sun (and sand) in March too. But by then, it'll be a balmy 40 here! Should have planned the trip for earlier - damn. Sounds like a nice work trip though! |
