I am coming up to volunteer and  just booked a room at a place 5 miles out of town. $75 a night, no minimum. Pretty sweet if you ask me. Not 5 star, but I'm not coming up to hang out at the hotel.

I lovedlovedloved LP this year (2009) but next year am expanding my horizons and trying CDA.  Will be back at LP in the future because I think it's the perfect course for me.

Last year Maine Rob sent me the IMLP spinervals DVD with Coach Troy.  I'm happy to pass it on to a first-timer for 2010 who won't be able to get up there to train IRL, on the condition that you pay it forward to a 2011 participant, too.  PM me.

I'm in.  First Ironman.  Also at the Northwoods and potentially also bringing a dog (if my fiancee and I get one this winter).

1. Is this your first IM?
Yes!  Did the Musselman HIM this year and TOTALLY felt like I could be ready for an IM in a year.

2. Have you done LP before?
Biked the loop once (no out and back) and then swam for a little bit on Mirror Lake.

3. What are your goals for the 2010 race?
Finish in under 13 hours.  I need to get LOTS of practice on the bike.

4. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc)?
Is anyone planning on using the BT program? I'm with RobbyN210 on this, I used the BT program for my HIM and thought I was VERY well prepared (in comparison to two seasons of triathlon planning my own training).

I do not have a place to stay definitely.  Someone else from the Binghamton,NY area asked if I'd be interested in going in on renting a cottage outside of LP.

First IMLP and first full distance Ironman for me. Looking forward to keeping myself injury free and getting close to my 12 hour target.

I'll be staying a Lake Placid Lodge as it happens to be my wife's birthday the same weekend and so needed a big gesture / bribe to make it all happen!

Does anyone have any interest in a fall training weekend up there, before it gets too cold?  I'm about 6 hours away, and would like to get up there maybe 3 times or more to train on the course before the race.

I know this is a hilly course.  Which leads me to my question: how do I get better running and biking hills?

I'm in for my first IM.  I'm doing my first HIM in Austin in October.

My goal is a work in progress.  Obviously, #1 is just to finish and to finish strong.  As to time, I went into an Olympic hoping for 2:40 and did a 2:26, which has caused me to revise my HIM goal down.  Maybe I can do 13 hours at IMLP?

What gearing should I have?  I averaged about 21 mph over an Olympic distance, and I'm definitely a spinner.  I'm hoping to average 17 mph at IMLP, perhaps a bit faster depending on how much I improve over the next 10 months.  (I'm happiest at 100 rpm, and almost never drop below 90.)  I've got a 39x25 right now, and I'm contemplating getting a 12-27 for the rear.

What kind of terrain do you ride now?
Lake Placid is hilly, but not crazy... I think from what you are describing, you will be faster than 17mph average, but a lot depends on your training over the next 10 months and again, what terrain for instance the olympic distance was on.

My Olympic was pretty flat.  My usual rides are long flat ones, and short, steep rolling hills.  I don't have any long sustained climbs within riding distance from my house.  I have found a great 55 mile loop that I rode a few weeks ago that starts an hour's drive west of me.  (It's a gorgeous ride if you're ever in the DC/Northern Virginia area: http://bikewashington.org/routes/bluerdg/index.htmAccording to mapmyride, it's got 2500 feet of climbing over 55 miles compared to 2336 for one loop of IMLP.  Next summer I plan to go ride two loops a couple times to prepare.  I think it's quite a bit steeper than LP (sustained climbs at 11%+).  I had no trouble in my 39x25, but then again, I only went 55 miles and didn't have to run a marathon afterward.

So just to double-confirm, for the Ironman LP newbie, the majority of the climbs during the LP loop are long sustained, gradual climbs?  How many out-of-your-seat "granny gear" climbs are there?

I have a 12-25 cassette... should I be looking into a 12-27?

DC you'll be fine on a 12-25.

btw if anything change out your small chainring for a 38t.  You're running a 39-53t chainring set?

The only way is to ride the hill to see how you feel.  You got any hills on that island of yours?  I rode a 12-25 and a 39-53 chainring setup for LP and that worked for me.  I think I used the 25t twice just so I did have to stand.  I climb a lot standing.  Probable not the ideal thing for long endurance races like IM.  Standing to climb will use more energy.

I do 98% of my bike maintenance.  A new cassette will cost you near $100 and 38t chairing around $25.  If you can do your own maintenance that would pretty much be your cost.

You use the same combo for SavageMan?

No way jose!

I used a 38-52t chain rings setup and a 12-27 cassette for SavageMan.......

Needed the 27 for the "Wall' and "Killer Miller" most all the rest the 25 did the trick in the 38t chain ring.

I've done the course on 23-25-27 and the most comfortable was 27 on the TT bike. I am planning to a 25 for LP next year as my cranks are now 165mm

PennState - 2009-09-25 8:36 PM Bobby, I will be a little different in my advice...

You should think about what a comfortable bike time would be for you.
Generally most should run a standard 53/39, but here are my cassette thoughts:

1. Sub 5:20... 11-23
2. 5:40 to 5:21... 12-25
3. 6:00 to 5:41... 12-27
4. 6+ hours... consider a triple crank.

Yeah, yeah fire away, but *I* think people don't gear properly for hilly IM courses.

Just my useless opinion.

I'm thinking a 53-39 12-27 might be right for me.

What did you use, just out of curiousity?
