Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread

If anybody is interested, I am looking to be in the Lake Placid area some time near the end of this month, maybe the 29th, maybe during the week before. If anybody wants to organize a training ride, let me know. My current plan is to do one loop - thats kinda where Im at right now - and skip the out and back, but add the climb up Whiteface, just because I want to climb Whiteface.

Let me know what dates work for you, if you're interested - I'll be on vacation and flexible.

As for the questions:

1. Virgin voyage for me.
2. Nope
3. Finish strong, have fun, see friends finish as well, stay healthy.
4. How far out does everybody plan on starting their specific IM training plan? Im thinking about building the base all winter, and then turning on the heat sometime around mid March, giving me about 16 weeks, with an Oly and HIM in between.

Can't believe it, but I too am in!!

1. Is this your first IM?
Yep

2. Have you done LP before?
Does practice or training count? LOL, then no.

3. What are your goals for the 2010 race?
To finish sore, exhausted, but HAPPY.

4. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc
Has anyone used the ironman training plan here on BT?  If you did how did it work for you??  I followed their 1/2 IM program twice thsi year and figured the IM would work too.
Also does IM constantly occupy everyone else's thoughts too? Only 347 days (not like I am counting lol) and I can't stop planning and getting ready.

questions:

for non virgins out there....what were your peak training weeks (hours) and how many times did you hit that?
What happened that you never expected?

I think mine were around 20 hours (which only speaks to hours logged and not what intensity was done) and I think I had 2 peak weeks.  The first was during Jorge's camp mid June and the second was when I went up to LP the second time to 2 weeks later (so maybe 6 & 4 weeks out?).

What happened that I never expected?
1.  The swim was totally fine.  Minimal contact for me.
2.  Way more wipeouts on the bike than I ever expected.  I spent far more time watching what was going on 50 yds in front of me as a result.
3.  I dropped my water bottle just after the last aid station on loop 1 (which is on 86 probably half way back into town) and had over an hour till the next aid station to get another one.  (Lesson learned, throw a water bottle in special needs).   There is not an aid station at special needs.
4.  Portapotties were almost always full.  Lesson learned, if there is one open, stop immediately while you have the chance.
5.  I had sunscreen in both T1 & T2 bags, and both special needs bags, and forgot to put it on in all but T1.  Stupid.
6.  I was just so happy the whole race.  Even when the run was sucking and I was convinced IM was a bucket list item, I was still happy.

What happened that you never expected?

This year was my first IM.

I didn't expect:
After all the hype about the crowded swim, I stayed wide the whole time and had perhaps the most pleasant swim I've had all year.
The headwinds coming down Whiteface to be such a pain in the f'ing arse!!
The race itself became such a no-brainer. It was getting to the starting line that was hard.
How mentally and physically tiring the final month of training would become.
How awesome the volunteers were!!!!!!!!!!
How delicious and refreshing chicken broth is even on a hot sunny afternoon.

OK, I'm doing this too . . . used to live in northwestern PA and spent a lot of time in the Adirondacks, now I live near Charleston, SC.  So I'll answer the introductory questions:

1. Is this your first IM?  No, I did IMFL 2008

2. Have you done LP before?  No

3. What are your goals for the 2010 race?  Get a lot stronger on the bike. Finish while having fun and not getting hurt.  Wildest dream/goal: Finish with a better time than IMFL (16:30).

4. Do you have any specific questions that you wish addressed about LP (the race, training etc).  OK, how hard are those hills, really? . . .

I'm in,this will be the second IM I have signed up for. I'm doing IMKY 30 Aug, so I have some work to do before I start thinking about IMLP. Looking forward to hearing from you over the next year. Jim

I booked at northwoods.

should be my second IM. Planning on Florida in November. I will definitely be doing a camp. Probably with Cadence but it would be cool to do a BT training weekend too.

Are they long rollers?  Can you see the top?  Are they long false flats?

I like LazyMarathoner's elevation image as I'm thinking that's perhaps a realistic potrayal of the grades...?

Bob, they are not hard. They are mainly rollers.

Agreed.  I'm a brand new cyclist and I hate to climb, and I don't think they're very hard.  The LP course is my favorite bike ride I've ever done.  It is perfect b/c it's broken up into several different sections, which or me makes the time fly by.  The sections are as follows:
1.  Climb out of town
2.  Keene descent (my favorite part of the entire course.  Get aero, go nuts & have fun flying!!!)
3.  Flat part through Jay
4.  90 degree turn & climb to Wilmington
5.  Out & back
6.  Climb back to town on 86.

If I can bike this course, they are not that hard.  They will wear on you and your legs will be tired, but you can totally do this course without trashing your legs.

Ooo!! I'm IN!! This will FINALLY be my first Ironman. The best part is, I've convinced my boyfriend to sign up too, so I have the best training partner, ever....except for when he kicks my butt cycling....then I'm mad.

Anyways, I'm very excited. My first goal is to finish, then after that, it will be to beat Ryan, hehe. I would like to have a solid first IM experience, but I'm not putting a time goal out there yet.

We have a house rented that's on Lake Placid, about 2 minutes from town. Both of our families are staying with us for the whole week, so it should be a blast!

It will be dog-world won't it?

Yes it will be.  If it were up to me, there'd be no pets.  But obviously, I'm not in charge

There were a few - not many. I certainly wasn't looking for any markers...the course is pretty much divided up into sections so you got an idea where you are all the time.

No idea where we are staying for race day.  We will probably stay at my Mother-in-law's cabin/trailer near one of the other lakes and then I'll be hitting someone up for the night before the race and the night after so I do not have to travel back and forth (I think her place is like an hour or so away).  Plenty of time to work that out.

Goal is to come into the race trained well (for once) and see what the day brings.  Wayyyyyy to early to even think about a projected time goal.

Agree with others in that they are not that hard at all. I rode the course early in my training and with a really easy effort, felt I was able to do well. I'd say the only thing to note for me on race day is the feeling in your legs starting the run due to a long gradual climb at the end of the course. However, in training I skipped the small loop in town so maybe that will help some. When I started my brick run I definitely felt the strain of the hill, but after a half mile or so I settled in nicely.

LOL, same here! I'm also at Northwoods, as of now I'm heading up there solo. I may be able to get someone to come with me next year, but really don't care. I'm used to racing alone.
