REGISTERED!

I'll throw a general invitation out there--if anyone wants to come pre-ride the course, I only live an hour away.  BTers are more than welcome to visit.  You just need to see if I'm home.   I probably get back from Iraq in early August.

When do you leave for Iraq? I cannot imagine training for an Ironman while serving the country on foreign land. Thank you for what you do and stay safe. My thoughts and prayers will be with you.

I leave for training in mid-December and should be out the door to Iraq around about the first week of February...for six months.  Have bike and CT, will train.

I keep telling myself...Chris get your a$$ out of bed and train...body not listening.  I'm going to have to get through the eating frenzy next week and then force myself to train in the morning and lift weights in the afternoon...oh yeah, plus go to work, night class, etc...

It's going to be a fun year!!

A couple of rambling thoughts about places to stay in PCB.  Closer is better in terms of less walking and just being in the heart of things.  However S. Thomas Drive which runs right in front of the Boardwalk hotel and condos (headquarters hotel) is two lane and as race day approaches traffic is just a jam - and it's closed to traffic (I think) on race day.  So driving in and out is a hassel.

If you are a few blocks up the street (west) you can compromise with close enough to be  a short walk, but out of the traffic jam (mostly).

I stayed just a little farther west of there in '08 at Long Beach condos.  Super condo, cheap.  Internet was sketchy as was cell phone service.  But the view was awesome.  The walk was just a little long ~1/2 to 3/4 mile.  That doesn't sound like much but walking back and forth two to four times a day does put some miles on your feet.  It amounted to about a 15 minute walk down the beach.  (longest walk in the world after the IM )  Closer by about a 1/4 mile is the Shores of Panama.  Lots of BT folks stayed there in 08 and it sounds like a pretty good place. (condos VRBO)  I estimate it's at least 1/4 mile closer.  I think I'll see if I can find a place there.    I'm also considering Sunbird, which is the next one closer to Boardwalk.

I suppose coming in the other way - from the east - from Thomas drive might be ok.  I never drove around.  Mostly I just walked over, and after I discovered that I could just walk up the beach that's what I did.

If you want to spend way too much time playing on the computer you can go to google, click on maps and type in Panama City Beach FL.  The pointer is rignt on the cut off to S. Thomason drive.  You can use the Little guy tool (whatever it's called) and do a virtual drive down the street and look at each place from the street.  use the four arrows in the upper left to look left, right, up and down.   Have fun.    The place with four flags in front is the race headquarters.

Hope this helps.   I'd like to find a map with all the condo's named, but was unsuccessful in '08.

To piggy back on where to stay...I recommend the Shores of Panama or Laketown Wharf.  I know many like to be a host hotel but you have to think about getting in and out.  As the race gets close you will have limited access in and out.  The Shores & Wharf are just down the street (East of Boardwalk) in the bend of Thomas Drive.  They are accessable and very nice.  Since I live here I'll drive Thomas Dr and see what is around one weekend if anyone has questions.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

As this will be my first IM, and obviously my first time for Florida, I asked a few questions about the event, and got this great reply from a fellow BT'r - tuan2u.

Figured this would help others going to Florida for their first time also - even if it isn't your 1st IM.

troyboy - 2009-11-17 4:01 PM

Anyone who has done this event in recent years have any details about the event, and what to expect? What are the rest stops like for bike and run?

Advice on what to pack for special needs food bags? Advice on what to pack in transition bags?

How about managing nutrition?

I just did it oh ... 10 days ago ? I'll get do it again in 350+ days

The bike rest stop is at mile 50. The have a bunch of paper bins with your transition bag in it. You dropped off the special needs transition bag in the morning of the race and they tranport these bins to mile 50. The bins are lined up sequentially by your bib numbers. When you reach the bins, there will be a volunteer nearby to help your retrieve your bags. You get what you need and either drop the bag back into the bin or onto the ground.

The run transition bag is at the 13.1 mile turnaround point. Basically, you make a U-turn at the turnaround point and about 30 yards later you would see a bunch of volunteers standing next to a bunch of transition bags. They are also lined up sequentially. You tell the volunteers your number and they will give you your bag. Take whatever you need and either give it back to the volunteer or throw it away.

They have the system down pretty tight. Before you get to any of the transition area (special needs or regular r/b/s transtion area), there is a few volunteers standing around looking at your bib. As you pass them, they would shout out your bib number via a loud speaker to tell the transition bag volunteers that you are coming. The volunteers would hear the number and scramble to get your bags for you. By the time that you get to your designated area, the bags will be waiting for you.

You can help yourself as well as the volunteers by yelling out your number as you approach the guy with the loud speaker AS WELL AS near the volunteer areas. They have a lot of athletes to deal with so by yelling out your number you are helping them as well as yourself with a more smooth transition. I saw a few of a$$holes out there giving the volunteers attitudes because the volunteers were a little bit slow. Don't be one of these a$$holes. The volunteers are there to help you ... not screw with you. Thank them when you are done.

As far as content of the special needs bag. Go minimum if you can. There are Gatorade and gel stations at almost every 10 miles intervals. Tell yourself that you consider anything and everything in those bags as trash after you pass them.

I put the same amount of stuff in my special needs bike bag as I carry with me on the bike. In other words, the same amount gels, energy bars, and fluids. When I get to mile 50, I replace everything that was used during the first 50 miles and discard everything else.

In my run special needs bag, I only carry arm warmers and a pair of gloves. You may consider carrying a run light. The turnaround point at the park is litterally pitched dark in many stretches. They have some artifical lights in some area but others are pitched dark. Some of the side streets during the run is also dark but manageable.

As far as run and bike transition bags, put in there what you normally carry during any other races ... no more, no less. There is also a morning dry clothes bag. This is a bag that has stuff that you need in the morning (i.e., sweatpants, goggles, wetsuit, sandles, etc). You carry this bag with you to the start of the race. Before you leave the transition area and head towards the beach there are a bunch of bins with bib numbers on there. You would take out of the morning bag what you need for the swim (i.e., wetsuit, goggles, etc) and put in what you don't need (i..e., sweatpants, sweatshirts, etc). Once you are done, you just drop the bag into the bins. The bins will be there after the race in the exact location. When you come back to the transition area to pick up your bike, you just pick up the morning bag also since they are in the same tranisition area.

You can also pick up your transition bags in the same area as where you dropped them off the day before. Your special needs bag can be picked up the following morning between 7AM-noon. If you want to know what's in store for you then goto the ironman florida web page and download this year athlete's guide. It's good reading.

As far as managing nutrition, do what you do in practice ... no more, no less.  Don't pack 12 suitcases for a 17 hour tour   On the bike, you have water, Gatorade, and gels at every 10 mile intervals.  On the run you have fruits, Coke, gels, Gatorade, water, chicken broth, and a bunch of other stuff every mile.

I don't know how true this is but a friend who trains with me said they are going to move the finish line back in front of the boardwalk next year.  He was told the reason it was where it was this year is because of the construction at the boardwalk.   He competed in 2008.

I like the way it was set up this year.  He said he liked the run halfway turn around better.  He said that in 2008 the turn around was right at the finish line on the main stretch in front of the boardwalk which he said messed with your mind a little.  This will be my first full so I am excited.  I have done  several sprints as well as HIM.

I am going to sign up for the Gulf Coast Triathlon in PC.  It is the same course as IM but half.  I think it is May 9.  Are any of you planning on competeing?  I did it last year.  It was hot but fun.  Hope we can get as many posts as the last IMFL thread.

Wow- this was really useful information. I was wondering those exact things. I was wondering about safety- if the run course is completely dark in some areas- are the runners safe? Is there ever a time when you will be alone on a dark highway or some weird thing like that? A:so- after the race, how do you collect your stuff? Or do you pick it up the next day?

I've run enough in the partial dark that running through the dark park was ok, but it was just a tiny bit un-nerving.   I was in total dark going both out and back on the second loop.  I just jogged along kind of gingerly carefully putting each foot down and trying to judge by skylight where the center of the road was.  I highly recommend taking a small flashlight.  I'm planning on it.   For much of the race you are in groups of people and there are people to follow.  I never felt unsafe.  I was more worried about stepping off the road and turning my ankle.  The dark part is probably less than a mile, it just seems like a very long way.

I really think they ought to put in some sort of light along this part of the course.  Those rechargable walkway lights are cheap and would do the trick.  Think I'll suggest it to the RD. -- Anyone know how to contact them? I sent a e-mail through the generic site.

You are rarely "alone"  even when it seems like you are, if you stop, within a minute or so some one comes up from behind.  The aide stations are about 1 mile apart.   In 08 there were a couple of guys patroling on cruser bicycles.

Regarding picking up your stuff:  You have access to the transition area after the race (I dont know how late.)  I picked up my bicycle just before 10:00 pm so I could get it to the guys shipping them back before they closed at 10:00pm.  Transition is open in the morning so you can pick up anything else you left as well as special needs bags.    I found the sweatshirt I had left at the swim start on a 'lost and found' rack outside the athelete's dinner the day after the race.

I did IM Canada this year and had a clip on light that I put on the visor of my hat. I saw quite a few of them last year at IMFL so I picked one up. IM Canada it was dark for about 8 miles with lights only on the aid stations as we ran on rural roads. Even with my light I would have little stumbles as the pavement changed.

Course on run was different this year at IMFL with 3 instead of 1 aid station in park. Who knows what they will do next year? The change may have been since finish line was closer to the park.

I'm planning on clip on light again and maybe even a small super lightway flashlight that I use here for night time walks.

Add it to your IM packing list you all have started right?

I have a container in my basement I collect IM stuff...almost tube of chamois butt'r goes in there as does almost used Body Glide and different odds and end I collect throughout the year. I have a spreadsheet of all my bags and update it after all my IMs so I know what works and what I need. It's way cheaper to collect those little things thorughout the year..plus it's fun.

Pick the latest one, cut and paste it and add yourself back on.

When people hit reply they don't always use the most up to date list.

Maybe we need an official list keeper...anyone want to do that?

Kathy you are SO organized.  You guys listen to her, she helped me get through my first one.

I just found this in Brittany's blog - her first is tomorrow.  It's so true.  So here's some inspiration from Brittany:

-An Ironman is not made in 140.6 miles; an Ironman is forged through countless early morning wake ups, gallons of sweat, hundreds of miles of focus, and many months of self-discipline. Like steel, an Ironman enters the fire, is softened, and beat down, and shaped, and molded, and in the end is solid and strong. Tomorrow, I will be an Ironman
