Are you socially awkward? (Page 3)

Again my problem is propriety rather than confidence ... I'm actually considerably more socially appropriate online and texting because I have to go through my finger and script filter. My mouth and live action filter is just not that fast. Also I could get kicked off BT if I was the same

But, other than that ... I am pretty much the exact same person online, on the phone, in person ... during races ... just not during the swim.

I have to agree with asking a lot of questions. I work with accountants (I'm in sales), and you'd think you'd be yawining ten seconds into a conversation based on stereotypes. But they lead interesting lives, just like a lot of people. Some of my favorites
- Are you originally from this area?
- What do you do when you're not crunching the numbers?
- Where are you going for vacation?
- Why did you decide to become an accountant?

At parties, I ask people why they're at the party. I always look for commonality. I've met more than a few transplants from Jersey/Philadelphia, triathletes/cyclists/runners, flyfishermen, just by asking a few questions. And, as they say on Sesame Street, asking questions is a good way to find things out.

My roommate is in finance at a big tobacco company, and I like to think that I am less socially awkward than he is.  He may deal better than I in a professional setting, but when it comes to real life (yea, I said it, professional settings aren't real life), I think I am better equipped than he is...  

And YOU don't want to be friends with ME?  Had you left engineering to go to something other than finance, I might understand, but that, to me, sounds like the epitome of jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire!   

I wish that I would pause, sometimes, to think before speaking.  But if it is funny, to me, I just gotta say it!

As you should, Mike.  If even one other person laughs, or was thinking the same thing, it clearly had to be said, and you brought a smile to someone's face.  If not, you brought a smile to someone's face (yourself), so it was worth it! 

I usually think that quite often in a social setting.

Oh... mind in the gutter I suppose.

My former roommate was dating an engineer.  She wore a T-shirt that said, "Talk nerdy to me."

As for social inappropriateness -- other than the leg humping, I thought Yanti had written her post about me!!!

I hate small talk. I sometimes feel like that's being anti-feminine (I'm a chick). I can't stand chit chat about nothing or even worse -- gossip (which soooo many people do).
I don't drink either...used to and you could not keep me quiet or sane for that matter.
It's tough to find like minded peeps but if I stumble upon others who do triathlons, like animals, have boys, etc... we can start up a great conversation.
I tend to really enjoy debates but have found that in social situations in which people really don't know each other (work, parties) those types of topics fail miserably for me in terms of being a magnet for new friends.
(Foot in mouth seems to be my forte)
Asking others about themselves is great but what I have to mentally do is NOT think about myself (like what will I say next, do I have spinach in between my teeth, is that guy talking to my boobs, do i have bad breath?) because it deflates my confidence and makes it all about me instead of a genuine interest in the other person. People ALWAYS know when someone is genuine...even if somewhat awkward  

Me I'm pretty shy really, and not very talkative.  My Evil Twin on the other hand has absolutely no qualms about getting into trouble.  She will tell you all kinds of inappropriate and off the wall stuff.  She is the one that usually gets crazy while I sit at home and study.  She periodically gets a hold of my computer too and says all sorts of stuff to people.  It can get quite embarrassing really. 

Why yes, yes she did.  I had one with pink flowers and fluffy bunnies but she put this one up instead and won't let me change it.  **sigh**
