I believe for real swimming board shorts are a stupid idea, they alter your form in a bad way.  Your kick gets messed up, the glide portion is negated, your hips are pulled down.

Basically you get an inferior workout with the board shorts.  Suck it up and buy a jammer.

Mister Mike - 2010-11-17 10:06 PM No problem checking my modesty at the door. But at the town pool with all my kids friends and other parents I don't want to be the talk....or Laugh of the town. I don't even like wearing the tri shorts at the town pool and I assume that is what the jammers will fit like correct?

IMO, you have to make a choice. Either you go to the pool to hang out with your kids and their friends and parents. Then board shorts are O.K. Or you go to the pool to train. Then you wear what is best for your training (I wear jammers, but have no problem wearing briefs). If using the appropriate training gear makes you the talk or the laugh of the town, that's the town's problem.

On that note, I couldn't possibly imagine why wearing jammers should make anyone the talk or the laugh of the town. Surely you are not the only person there actually swimming and wearing similar gear?

OK it looks like the Jammers are the way to go. Is the only difference between jammers and square leg the length of the shorts?

Also my waist size varies between a 36 and 38 depending on the time of the year and sometime the cut of the pants. Should I get a 36 or 38? When I drop a few pounds by the summer will the 38's still fit?

Now on another note where is a good place to pick them up online. There has to be some great sales going on now. I don't figure the demand for swim wear is that big in November.

I love http://www.swimoutlet.com/ for my online swimming purchases...

As for size, there isn't a huge difference. Get what fits you now. The drawstring should be enough to keep you in your jammers, even if your size fluctuates. If you end up needing another size later on, pick up another pair then.

I got the Speedo Endurance jammers at swimoutlet.com.  If you're really worried about it, wear the jammers under the trunks and, when ready to swim laps, just slip off the trunks in the pool.  Then, put the trunks back on in the pool when you're done.

I think I would feel a little awkward walking around the family pool in jammers, but could care less at the pool where I swim laps.

That is what I do when I train in my tri suit. It's not like I am Tommy Lee; Richie Sambora or Kevin Bacon.   It's funny I can stand up in front of 300 people and talk without breaking a sweat. But wearing a tight suit out in the open bugs me.

Mister Mike, I was a little concerned about training at the local public swimming pool with families this summer in my speedo, after training almost exclusively at Gold's Gym.  I would wear board shorts over my speedo/jammers and keep them on until I got in the pool to swim.  Pull em off quickly and hop in.  Once you are in the pool no one can tell what you are wearing. Hop out and put em back on.  It worked well for me in a similar situation.

Wow. A surprising number of board shorts.

Briefs 90% of the time (Splish and Nike)

This is my fav.

Otherwise, whatever I have in my bag that is dry/clean. A TYR drag suit, tri shorts or short jammers.

Always -- Tyr Jammers and one of my 4,629 swim caps. Goggles. Watch.

Sometimes, as accessories:
-pull buoy
-Finis Fulcrums
-hand paddles
-Zoomers
-clutched tennis balls
-Tempo Trainer inside my swim cap

As for your board shorts or anything baggyish, that is great for "resistance" training. I used to do it in the days of yore, but over the past half-decade or so I've just gotten lazy, I guess.

Board shorts until I left my cell phone in my pocket for a 30 min swim. Now I wear speedo jammers....I do notice less drag....

Just so you know, my Finis jammers have a liner brief in them, so you have a double layer in there to, uh, smooth out your profile.

In my case that's asking a bit too much of a small piece of nylon.

For all the jammers users, why jammers over briefs.  I just find briefs more comfortable, so that's why I use them.

My HS swimming daughter would freak if I showed up at the pool in a "speedo."

I don't understand why people train in jammers. If you actually spend a decent amount of time in a pool, you know chlorine turns your suits see through. Jammers are also "racing" suits. Or at least they were when they first came out and our coaches had us buy a pair.

I train in a speedo with a mesh drag suit over it.  The drag suit makes me work harder and doesn't cause me to alter my form. I wear it a) out of habit since my coaches had me buy them when I swam USS and b) because I don't care about the condition of my speedo underneath. My speedos however have deteriorated to the point where my only remaining one is a water polo speedo, which amazingly is still black.
