I own a bar on the corner of 6th and main.  Its just blocks from the check - in.  I'd be happy to put something together if there's interest.

In for this for sure.

I would be interested in this if my schedule works out, it's a 4 1/2 hour drive from Springfield to Racine.
Will your bar be open the day of the race? Seems like it could be a fun place to celebrate later. My training buddy and I are spending Sunday night, driving back Monday.

Hi Guys,

I have a quick question:

Do you know where I can get a video of the bike portion of the race?  Like a video that I can ride to that makes you feel like your riding the course?

I also may be interested in getting together over Memorial Day to try out the course.  I think that sounds awesome. Smile

If you have a CT, there is a Spirit of Racine course you can ride.   You won't see the course, but it will have the elevation changes which seemed awfully minimal to me last year.

btompkins0112 - 2010-12-26 7:57 PM I am planning on this race being my first HIM.  Does anyone have any insight into whether this is a good first?

It was my first triathlon, and was good.  'Cept for the road conditions at times.  BUMPITY-BUMPITY-BUMP!

This will be my first HIM, luckily here in CA I can bike and run outside all year round...its getting my butt into the pool that is tough!  Come April the LA Tri Club does an ocean circuit Wed mornings...at least I will be prepared for cold, choppy water.

Hi everyone!
This will be my first HIM as well!  I am excited, but a little nervous about the swim.  Does anyone know what the water temperature has been on average the past couple years?

I'm not going to sugar coat it for you, and I'll lay on you straight...

IT'S EFFIN COLD!!!! I've been at Racine for the past 4 years, 3 years doing the Sprint the day before and then last year doing the HIM, and it's ALWAYS been cold...and by cold, I mean anywhere between 55-60 degrees.  I wouldn't dare do this race without a L/S wetsuit.

WELCOME....and GOOD LUCK!!

Awesome.  I do have a long sleeve wetsuit, so I am set on that front.  Might consider a neoprene cap too then.
Thanks!

It's funny though....I just re-read my race report from last year and I had the water temp at 64, so I don't know if I had that right, or if that's actually what it was.  It can sometimes be choppy too, although, the last couple years, I just remember the cold being a factor.

It really is a great race...really looking forward to going back for some redemption from last years abysmal performance!

The water temp was 64F that day.  Given what it had been earlier in the summer, I thought the swim was doable. I felt my feet the minute I hit the shore which is always a good sign.   I didn't wear a neoprene cap, but I did double up (like I always do to keep my goggles in place if I'm kicked).

Are neoprene caps 'legal'?  Are you talking about just a swim cap or a scuba hood?

I hope neoprene swim caps are legal.  I get cold so easy.  I did a sprint last summer where the temp in the lake was 75 degrees.  I didn't wear a wetsuit and I was freezing the entire swim.  I was shaking when I got out of the water...crazy.

I will wear a wetsuit for Racine and any other legal product that will keep me warm during the swim.

Anyone have any advice on brand, sizing, and where one would purchase the afore mentioned neoprene caps?

I did my very first tri on the Michigan side of lake Michigan, and to quote miami9296 "it was effin COLD!"

I use a blue seventy one.  I think I ordered it from Trisports using the BT discount.  One thing to note.  Use a ton of body glide on the back of your neck.  The first time I used this, I didn't and I got a huge wetsuit burn on it.

Before IM bought the rights to SOR (Spirit of Racine), a neoprene swim cap was legal.  However, one MUST wear the official swim cap OVER the neoprene cap.  I wore mine for 2 out of the 3 races I did.

I suspect that the M-Dot branded race wouldn't have any issue with a neoprene swim cap if the water temps were wetsuit-legally defined.  I would refer to the IM 70.3 Racine race rules and regulations page first and foremost to find out.  If they don't specifically state swim caps, then contact the race director.

Hi everyone:
I registered for the Chicago Triathlon to be my first triathlon but my wife decided I was ready for a bigger challenge so she registered me to the Racine HIM as a surprise. Now I'm all excited and nervous about this.

I'll be doing the HIM training program from Beginner Triathlete starting in March but I'm nervous as I don't have anyone to train with. So, if anyone is in Chicago, I'd love to go out and train with them, be it for a run, a bike or a swim in the lake, so I can learn about transitions, nutrition, equipment, etc. etc.

Thanks!

The water was a bit warmer this past year..but that is not saying much! Still COLD! Good to see you on here Jenny, I borrowed Anna's cap last year but ended up not wearing it.

I did Racine last year, it was my first 70.3 and I have never swam in any water so cold and I have been a swimmer my entire life! It is beautiful water though, nice and clear and the run is so pretty up to the lighthouse!

Hi all! Been signed up for Racine for about a month now, but I'm new to BT. Looking forward to following everyone's training this year!

Hi there Anne! Let me know if you decide to go up on one of the group rides/runs for practice, maybe we can carpool. I'll do what I can considering I have to work every other weekend, and I'll also be trying to get down to Louisville for practice at least once this summer.

I'm in the full swing of training with a half mary on April 2, A full mary on April 30th (my 39th bday!), plus I'm starting to get into a regular schedule of swims and bikes to get ready for Tri season! So excited! Happy training everyone!
