I'm planning to run a loop after riding the route Saturday, leg agony permitting. Thanks! No, but the Garmin files are available for downloading into your Garmin wristwatch..... If you don't have a Garmin, it also looks like the cue sheet along with the map should work decently too. I would look at the flyover from MapMyRide.com that's included on the page as well. I have a 305, not sure how well it will work with that model, but I'll give it a shot. And I do have the cue sheet and map, just seems like it might be tough to determine some of the turnarounds. Not a big deal either way, but I'll definitely err on the side of running it short rather than long! |

I re-conned the course last year armed with a cue sheet. There were markers painted in the road too. No problems. |

So far I've: - Changed my Facebook profile pic to whatever the winning bidder wanted - Accepted a challege to run a 5k with 120 pounds attached to me (waiting until after the event due to liklihood of injury) - And today I ate two Chipotle burritos in 20 minutes to get some guys from work to donate. Kinda evens out the 8 mile run this morning |

Regular 173 | Subject: RE: SavageMan Triathlon 70.0 : Official Thread Wow, what a ride today. Lesson #1, the compact with a 12-25 cassette was not enough for the Wall. Tried three times, fell three times, all within 20 feet of the top. Other than that, it was fun, and everything as advertised. Unfortunately with all the rain recently there is a ton of stone in the road, which made the downhills even more treacherous, and prety much eliminated my reasoning for using my tri bike. So, rather than switch out the cassette, looks like I'll be going with my road bike on race day. I hope that is enough for the Wall, but frankly, it felt like I just didn't have the power to get over the rough pavement. I agree with the earlier report, the markings were great. Other thoughts: -I think Big Savage is the toughest, the rest are hard because you're fatigued from the first climb -I had multiple "wow" moments, in that the switchbacks on some of the climbs let you see just how far you had ascended in a really short period of time -Maynardier cam as a surprise, since I had assumed there would be a turn involved in getting to it. I went from demoralized, thinking that the Ridge was still coming, to thrilled, seeing that the last big climb was done. I hope I learned enough to pay off next month, but we'll see. I had planned to do a full loop of the run course, but I was running right by may car at 3.5, and said screw it. |

So how is everyone's training going? I've been pretty consistent, but don't feel as "in shape" as last year when I was IM training. |

New user 9 Northern VA | Subject: RE: SavageMan Triathlon 70.0 : Official Thread I'm getting really psyched for the 18th. Training for me is going as well as can be expected with the busy lives that we all have. I have a good plan that I've followed consistently since February, and I have lots of quality workouts in the bank that give me confidence that I can get to the finish line. Unfortunately, what I don't have in the bank is any triathlon experience at all, since Savageman will be my first triathlon - yes I'm that guy. Wish I knew whether to be more nervous about making it up all the climbs, or the bottle exchanges and mount/dismount lines! Does anybody know what type of sports drink and gel that'll be on the course? Is it HEED and Hammer gels since Hammer is listed on the website as a sponsor? |

I think it's an advantage not knowing what to be scared of! But seriously, if you have the training in, and it's your first, think through and or practice the basics, such as doing dry runs of your transitions. Make lists, etc., so that you don't forget the basics and just go out on raceday and focus on your effort. |

Well, feel free to ask questions about triathlons in general. You've picked a tough one for your first. But, they all have some tough aspects to them, even the flat courses (though I'd rather be on those quite honestly). Hey unless you're getting out of shoes at the dismount, you basically just unclip and stop your bike when the volunteers tell you to dismount. Then unclip the other and jog into T2. Pretty similar with mounting...just move a bit beyond the line where the volunteer tells you and mount your bike, take off onto the course. Hopefully, you've got hills wherever you are in N VA to practice on (I do know there are some past Lovettsville and Purcelville, been on a few of them) cuz you're going to need that for this course. I sent a message to someone (knyost?) who's involved with the race about your nutrition question. It would be good to know. |

I have seen where it does get pretty chilly for mid Sept for the race. And I have used a wind vest for an Oct race and early Spring race. What's folks' take on this for this race? |

It will add some T1 time, of course, but I do not have any other idea. I also hope that race adrenaline will keep me warm. Though the first part of the course is quite flat and even downhill. Member 33 Rockville | Subject: RE: SavageMan Triathlon 70.0 : Official Thread I rode the bike course two weeks ago. Here are my observations. Compact crankset + 28 in the rear is enough. I was able to climb the Wall. I agree with other observers about intimidating view, about cracks in the road surface and about danger to fall back. I made it, but not sure I will do it again during the race. Need some practice, but do not know where to do this other than on the roof of my house. Moving the water station AFTER the Wall would help a lot. The climbs are not that tough as Shenandoah ones. But it is a lot of ups and down. Overall, I feel ok about 6000 ft gain now. The road conditions aren't great. There is lose gravel on one of high speed descents - be careful. I will definitely keep aerobars on. Beautiful views. It's a pity I will not see any of it during the race. --

Member 33 Rockville | Subject: RE: SavageMan Triathlon 70.0 : Official Thread I ran just about 3 miles of the running course and it was not steep. It is partially dirt road. Of course it is different comparing to Eagleman's 13 miler, but I do not see anything special about it. |

Roads are swept prior to race day and current roadwork and patching will be wrapped up well before race weekend. Run course is not easy. 1/4 mile gravel climb to turnaround up Fire Tower trail is very difficult. Hill in campgrounds is challenging. Otherwise, not awful. But, don't fool yourself, the run course is plenty challenging as well. |

I didn't get the chance to practice on it and probably won't. I know it's a double loop, but what about steepness of the hills and surfaces? Bwa-ha-ha. The run course is as hard as the bike. It's a 2 loop course with mostly rolling hills, with the exception of firetower road. That road is a steep, straight uphill hike. It's also one of those hills that you can't really run down - you kind of have to half jog for fear of falling. I ran a 8:10 min/mile last year, which put me 29th overall (top 8%). The wall really isn't so bad, as long as you can get a mostly clear shot at it. The pavement is a bigger issue than the hill, as it is cracked and broken (which is part of the fun). But the big challenge on race day is the other riders. I got lucky last year and got a clear shot at it without anyone in my way. It helps a lot to go up the right side, as the pavement is (was) better than on the left. I did have a question for Kyle. Is there a mandatory bike check for the 30? I'll be coming in from the DC area the day / night before, and need to plan all of the timing issues out. |

Pro 6011 Camp Hill, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: SavageMan Triathlon 70.0 : Official Thread I was more nervous about this race than I was for my first IM last year, but it's getting better. After riding the course a few weeks ago on my son's road bike with a triple (and making it up the wall ok), I had a compact put on my tri bike and got a bigger cassette for my race wheels, because not having aerobars to provide another option for position was a little rough, plus, I'm more comfortable on fast technical descents on my bike. I've been putting in a lot of hard efforts on a variety of terrain and I can see a difference in my sustainable speeds across the boards plus my climbing ability is noticably better. Yesterday was another little milestone. We did 70 miles with between 5,500 and 6,000 ft of climbing. The pace wasn't exactly blistering, and even though I was tired at the end, I still felt like I could have kept riding or ran, so it helped provide confidence. Now, I think my biggest concern is whether I will be lucky enough to get a clear shot at the wall, because I feel like I've got a handle on the things I can control. |

After a lot of back and forth, I decided to leave the tri bike at home and bring the road bike. Hopefully the compact and 11x28 will be enough to get me over the hills! Saw my race number ended up being 667. I'm kind of glad I'm not 666. Not too sure how I'd feel about wearing 666 while being chased up the wall by people dressed in devil suits! |
