tritocatchme - 2006-06-08 9:01 AM COJ is an internet forum. In an internet forum people often feel they can make rude comments/jokes they wouldn't otherwise make in real life because they don't have to see the person face to face. It's also exclusively 'members only'.

Wrong. I treat everyone like this, face-to-face or online. People will let you know if you cross the line, and should do so here as well, as Haley has done.

If you don't want people making fun of you, then don't be such an immature kinko's-power-mongering, drunk-posting, disrespectful-skirt-chasing, love-after-two-dates, easy target.

Wink

Edit to say: I'd put my "life outside of this internet forum" up against anyone's for comparison.

BigBoy - 2006-06-08 8:59 AM

First of all, when you present yourself in a certain manner, you start a ball rolling and sometimes that ball picks up speed and gets out of control. For example, when Tyrant presents himself as a heavy drinking, sexually overcharged college boy, or when Comet posts numerous sexually charged threads and reponses they open themselves up to a certain amount of piling on. There are many other examples of this, but I just mentioned these two because they were mentioned in the original post. Sometimes when things are constantly reinforced, they take on a life of their own. While I agree that some of these have gotten out of control, you still have to accept some of the responsibility for getting the ball rolling.

I agree with BigBoyScott's post.  We all convey how we want to be perceived and if you don't like how people are viewing you and reacting to you, then you should stop to wonder what it is you are putting out there about yourself.  You can't control what people will say about you, but you can/do influence how they perceive you.

Not everyone has manners. Feel free to slap them with a SHUTUP when they go too far.

tritocatchme - 2006-06-08 10:32 AM When newbies such as myself, Tyrant, etc. post with an angle that isn't cohesive with the core group's inside jokes / sense of humor, they're lambasted. example- personally, I think Tyrant's posts are hilarious. yet, because he makes spelling mistakes and drinks, parties (uh, who didn't when they were in college) he's labeled the prime example of the failing of today's youth. I think he's funny and real. I also think some of you he repeatedly ripped hm a new one (over and over) need to get off your friggin' computer realize there is life outside of this internet forum. it's all about perspective.

Not to pick on Tyrant, but since you used him as an example, here are my thoughts: Tyrant put himself out there as a poor spelling, sometimes incoherent, drunk-posting womanizer. So yes, some of us picked up on that and had fun with it. Sue us.

All the whining about how COJ is "exclusive" and "members only" is very unbecoming of some people.  Everybody was a newbie here at one time.  Lots of people come and go, and I can't remember anybody ever being given problems because they were new or not part of any group.  Why not just jump in and interact with people without worrying about who their friends are or what the inside joke is?  I haven't met 90% of people I talk to on here, but that doesn't stop me from....uh....just talking to them.

Isn't that just another way of saying "I don't fit in and it's your fault"?

Yes. That's true, but that urge (like all urges) needs to be kept in check.

And what do you mean "members only"?

There is a 'core' group of BT'ers that see COJ as their private forum. When newbies such as myself, Tyrant, etc. post with an angle that isn't cohesive with the core group's inside jokes / sense of humor, they're lambasted.

example- personally, I think Tyrant's posts are hilarious. yet, because he makes spelling mistakes and drinks, parties (uh, who didn't when they were in college) he's labeled the prime example of the failing of today's youth. Let me just say, it is established that Thairent is a a poor speller. If he is a drunken partier who gets lots of sex I would just say... well, I know where he's coming from. But I don't think anybody has really ripped him as being an example of the failing of today's youth, and if he was, it was probably motivated by jealousy.

I'm gonna be straight here, tritocatchme. I think you had a couple of pretty bad experiences that have coloured your impression of this place. In fact, given how you have reacted to your bad experiences in your posts, I'm surprised that you continue to post here. Not that I don't want you to stay, it's just that you had a rough start, being the subject of Jim's newbie rules, then again in the Brokeback Mountain thread (how's that for insider references?). I think you've taken some things pretty hard. Harder than you should.

The bottom line is that you need thick skin here. You have to be prepared to get called out by people who disagree with you. You, of course, can call people out when you feel it is necessary. Everybody is free to express their opinions, and so are you, but I wouldn't bother getting riled up about anything.

Just my perception, I may be wrong.

Didn't know there was a "fitting in" pre-requisite. However, as a super-clyde tipping the scales at 240lbs, there are many "fitting in" pre-requisites for certain tri apparel manufacturers. Props to Garneau for making a XXXL

I think the point that you're missing is that how you perceive your fitness (finally, a tri related segue!) is about you. What is "fitting in" anyway? Isn't that really YOUR perception of how you are received?

Do you have a specific gripe about your BT reception?

Gawd no...I love BT. I was trying to make a funny about form fitting tri apparel for those of us whose form is not so fitting. However, in an effort to be completely forthcoming and open, I do find it a little annoying when a particular thread becomes a private forum for a handful of people, especially when I notice that other postings on that particular thread are typcially ignored and the conversation continues amongst the small group. I'm thinking that is what tritocatchme was referring to. That being said, I agree that over time people develop personal relationships here and can see how some threads will become more personal between a small few. For me personally, I am not bothered...I say my piece anyway and if people like it or not, it's on them. My openness in threads is not callous to the feelings of others and I do my best not to offend.

I enjoy COJ as well as the other forums here, but that's just my .02.

Yes, I insulted you!!! I said it, I'll say it again!  YOU FIT IN!!!

In fact, you're in my inner octagon of exclusivity wherein no one is excluded.

We all fit in, just by virtue of being here. If you feel out of place, then maybe it's because YOU FEEL out of place.

Hate to tell you this Chuckmeister, but when you got 2000+ posts, you fit in. You may be the pain in the butt uncle who doesn't wear underwear, or the aunt with fake hooters and a plastic bronze tan, but you fit in. It's called lovable unlovableness.

I think it means she is eight sided and her inner group is so selective that everyone is invited. Kind of like having to wear a name tag where everyone is named Janelle.

Or maybe it is a refernce to the movie Octogon, where some secret judges made decisions on criminals and their fate even though the crimanals had a different sentince handed to them in court.

Or it could just be she smoked a little weed at Lunch...
