Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bripod - 2012-10-11 4:02 PM jgaither - 2012-10-11 3:50 PM for me, 1) I carry too much stuff to fit a stick of chewing gum-sized device in my pocket 2) I break them 3) I lose them 4) My computer can't read them, for some strange reason 5) $8 is a hardship after I spent $600 on my iPad 6) I'm forgetful 7) I don't understand how USB works and think it requires a cord Oh. Then I can see why cloud would be the better choice for you.
I had very similar thoughts.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jgaither - 2012-10-11 4:17 PM seriously? c'mon man. Why you gotta be like that? He asked for reasons why it'd be better. I gave him some. Maybe you prefer flash drives I happen to not. I'm just trying to help the guy out and let him know there are other simple options out there that he can take advantage of. But yes, I do lose them. I get like one use out of each flash drive then it's gone to who knows where. The rest are all issues I've had to deal with due to others irresponsibility. I still have flash drives from 7 years ago that still are working and are saving data for laptop rebuilds that I do from time to time. I have drivers stored on them, so I don't have to search through Compaq's web site when I have to transfer them anyway before I can connect the laptop to the internet. As far as the cloud goes, is it always available? I really don't know, because I haven't spent the time to research it. |

I really don't know, because I haven't spent the time to research it. 24/7/365 just an example (dropbox): on your phone (assuming android) download the app. It sits on your screen on your phone in one of your folders. Then go to dropbox.com and follow the instruction to create a user account (you can create a user account through your phone or your computer, really). Go to your phone and log in. When you log in it will ask if you want to automatically transfer your photos, and go ahead and enable. then down load the app on your iPad (or other tablet). As you take pictures with your phone they will store in your dropbox. pull up drop box on your iPad and navigate to "photos" and "poof voila" they are there to do whatever you want with. Set up drop box on your computer and you can pull the photos off there and edit as you see fit. If you have an iPhone and iCloud account it will sync up seamlessly together with an iPad in your photostream. No Dropbox required. Photos will edit your pictures or you can look into iPhoto for a bit better photo editing tool (if those are of any interest to you, they very well may not). I've been talking about dropbox b/c that's what I use, but Sugarsync gets rave reviews and I also use google drive for business. There are more than few out there. I think Amazon has it's own too if you were to go with kindle or something like that. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, things need to sync, rather than storing on the cloud or whatever system being used. I was thinking that things would be stored off site, and you would need to get it there. I will have to do some reearch in a month or so when I get closer to needing to make the decision.
Thanks. |

Thanks. Just go watch the video on the dropbox website, it'll tell you everything you need to know. And use this link when you sign up so I get extra storage for free! :-P http://db.tt/OHBgnYdP |

The same reason people pay far more for the rest of their products. Because it's an Apple product. |

I think Amazon has it's own too if you were to go with kindle or something like that. 24/7/365 assumes you are using a device that has it's own built-in access to the internet without any restrictions like being out of a service area, not roaming, etc. OP: Were you planning on buying a device with a data package? Or a device that only connects with Wi-Fi. Will it be connected to Wi-Fi ALL of time? Then you have access to cloud storage MOST of the time. Basically, cloud storage lives on the internet. If you have access to the internet, you're good. If you don't, and you're: 1. On the plane, or 2. In a remote area, or 3. In the car, and/or 4. Don't have the ability to tether to your phone, etc.. Then you don't have access to the cloud. P.S. This isn't about ipad vs. something else, just a general elaboration. Edited by BikerGrrrl 2012-10-16 1:42 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It will only be used on the internet when she would have wifi access. So the cloud does not always work, and where we live cell tower to cell tower is not good and no data plan worth having in our area. I have a data plan on my iPhone, but that is because of work more than anything. That was my guess for the cloud, and when she is in our house, it would not be a problem. But, at her parents it would be a problem and at multiple other places we would be taking it that would be a problem. I need to sit down with her and discuss her wants against the abilities of the equipment. She may decide on another laptop as they can be purchased at a decent price also.

Just call me retro... I'm not exactly sure how it fits into their marketing, either. The iPhone 5 has a 4" screen. Assuming this will a 7" device, they already have very stiff competition with the Asus/Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD at $199. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() M$ announced their Surface tablet pricing today a couple hours before Apple's announcement. Oops. The Windows RT-powered Surface starts at $499 for a 32GB model, $100 cheaper than an iPad with comparable storage. The Touch Cover, one of the more interesting innovations in Microsoft's tablet venture, isn't included for that price; it's only available as part of a $599 bundle with the same 32GB tablet. There is also a 64GB model that includes the Touch Cover for $699. Separately, the Touch Cover is $119 and the Type Cover is $129. I think M$ missed the boat here. You have the iPad at that price and people who aren't apple fans have already adopted android for less cost. No one but hard core M$ fans are going to drop 500-700 on an untested tablet with a very small app ecosystem. Just my opinion. |

It also comes loaded with Office, which is what I think MS is using to push them. |

Nothing official but this suggests 8 hours.
