The main reason I think the decision stinks is it adulterizes the sport. I made the point ealier about a hypothetical decision to shorten IM Hawaii to two hours so that it would neatly fit into a broadcast. This decision isn't much different than that. 'Splain to me how moving swimming finals to the morning "adulterizes the sport" as much as shortening an Ironman to two hours. |

I made the point ealier about a hypothetical decision to shorten IM Hawaii to two hours so that it would neatly fit into a broadcast. This decision isn't much different than that. The same could be said about the DH rule in baseball. And as for your comparison, not really. Shortening it to 2 hours would dramatically alter the event itself. It would have to have all the distances shortened severely, and would therefore not even be an Ironman event. Far as I know, they're just juggling the scheduling of things. And I don't think changing the timing of when an event is held adulterizes the sport. The real issue here is a matter of "We've always done it this way, we don't see a need to change it", and now someone comes along and changes it. They haven't shortened or lengthened the distances. They haven't modified the actual event in ANY way. They only really changed the start time. I guess I don't see the major issue with that. |

Although without the factors of the heat and sleep cycle getting in the way, as the swimming events are much shorter and indoors. |

Maybe this is one of those things where unless you're a competitive swimmer, you can't really get how much of a sea change this is. Swimmers are ingrained to a morning prelim/evening final mentality. It's like trying to change circadian rhythms. Swimmers are *used* to saving their best performances for the evening. It's going to force athletes to change their sleep habits, their training habits, their eating habits.

Because your thread title was so inflammatory, nobody WANTS to get your message, Jim. Your perfectly valid point is lost. NBC pulled a major bullshitty stunt and everyone shrugs. NBC promises increased ratings because less people will be watching on the internet, and the IOC gets a share of the profits. So yeah, the IOC made the decision, but NBC is the root cause. |
