Okay guys and gals!! Let's start the new week off with on a good note. I am going to lay out a few suggestions for the group and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

1 - Try to log all of your workouts in your training log. It's a great tool to use to track your progression and a good motivator when people leave you Inspires.

2 - When replying to an inspire use the "blog" option. That way the response gets put on the inspirees blog. (And you can check out what they've been up to at the same time. )

3 - Try to stay in contact with questions and concerns about plans, injuries, equipment, etc by posting on the forum. That way everyone can read your post and offer suggestions.

4 - If you haven't already, try to find a plan on BT that suits your needs. Last winter I followed the 20 wk marathon plan to train for my first marathon and it was a huge help. I added swimming and some spinning classes in on my own but tried to stick pretty close to the running volumes. The plans are there to use as a guide and if followed will help prevent overtraining injuries. They are a great resource.

5 - We have a wide spectrum of people in our group ranging from "beginners" who may have some great organizational skills to offer (among other things), to ultra marathoners that have run 100 mile races. Lets feed off each other and get the most from this forum.

Today's word of advice is to not get too stressed about fitting workouts in. If you're following a plan, keep in ming that it is not written in stone. If you are supposed to do a 1 hr swim and the pool isn't open, switch a day and run instead. If there is absolutely no way to get a workout in, look at doing some core exercises (push-ups, sit-ups, jump roping, etc) for 15 or 20 minutes. Being consistent will be the key to getting the most out of triathlons.

HAPPY SUNDAY!!!!

ctnord - 2008-01-05 11:15 PM . 3. Read - Running formula by Jack Daniels. Seems to have a lot about building a base and Vo2 max...wow...that is not my type of reading. Way too detailed for me, but I've heard really good. From what I've read so far I really think I overtrained last summer and never built much of a base.

I use that book as a guideline for my clients....it's a great book and will generally work for majority of the population...if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help...And I'll waive the usual  $9.95 per minute fee on the trixie-hotline

Thanks Trixie...I will take any advice I can get. I did spend several hours searching through BT learning! I am bound to run a 21 min 5k! I really think with some base training I can do it!

I read a very long thread about Heart Rates and LT. Here I was going to have an EchoCardiograhm. I told my Dr. I wanted to run faster and needed to get this heartrate thing figured out. This site just saved my $500 since that's what it would cost me for insurance.

Anyways..today I did an LT test. I did 15 warm up, 10 min easy and 20 min all out. I had a couple challenges but I still think I have a could read on my LT. My garmin is having issues connecting to my computer so I can't get all the details. The other issue I had was I had the auto lap counter set to mile. Oh yeah..one other issue I didn't hit Stop at the end...I hit lap thinking this would be good so I could see my recovery. Well anyway...kind of hard to figure out until I can dowload.

Here's what it looks like just from the quick screen view:
Max overall - 201
Avg over all - 160 including warm up, 8 mins of recovery

10 min easy:
avg: 149 - 10:59 min mile (sad)

20 min:
8mins
avg bpm 184
8.08 min mile

7.55 mins (1 mile)
avg bpm192
7.55 min mile

? the last4 mins is in limbo
- i remember it being over 190 most if not all of the time

Estimating my LT around 190-192

So now..I need to plug this information into the workouts I loaded from this site.

P.S. Trixie - my goal is to look like you! Do you have kids? If you do I'll tell myself there is still hope!

That's very nice of you to say,  thanks.  I do have kids....step kids. But there are many women on this site with children that have great physiques...you can do it!!

Now that you have some numbers....should be fun.  So, are you gonna use HR or paces from the book?  I use HR outside and paces on the treadmill, it's just easier that way for me and there is little variation between the two, at least in my case.

 HAPPY MONDAY PEEPS!!

Can you recommend a good training plan to complete a 1/2 marathon? I have one picked out for either the beginning of April or the end of March. This would be my first half marathon. The longest run I have done so far is about 8 miles and I can comfortably run between 3-6. I would like to run about 3 times a week. What do you think about the Hal Higdon plans?
Thanks for the advice!

Hey there... if I quite remember for the Higdon plan running 3 times a week is not enough.   the novice plan is 4X a week.  If you want to finish the half, running three times a week will get  you there and for that I recommend to follow  jeff Galloway's program.  That one is more "gentle" than the Higdon plan.

However if your longest run has been 8 miles I think you are ready for Hal...  3 times a week is good, but 4 times is better.  I did my second mary following the Higdon plan and it worked out well..

good luck...

He has good plans. I personally think that you can successfully run a half on three days a week but I would recommend doing some biking or cross training as well. On average,  I ran 4 days a week training for a 100 miler, but by adding biking and cross training my legs were more than ready.

If you have a pretty fast time goal, then more running may be beneficial.  However, since it is your first and you didn't state that you had anytime goals....I'm assuming you just want to finish healthy.

Which half are you going to do?  There is going to be a big ol BT gathering at the Martian Marathon in Michigan in April....come and join us, it should be fun!!

Yeah, I just noticed on the Blog that I am in.  I guess that means I will need to start training and posting again.

In regards to 1/2 mary training, I did my first1/2 Mary in ATL in Nov and didn't train all that much and ran it on a 75% ankle (major sprain in India didn't really allow training in Oct/Nov).  The most I had ran prior was about 10 miles.  If you can run 8 miles, the adrenaline of everyone around you will carry you the remaining four.  Not that I am advocating not training or even getting a really good training program, I am just saying I bet you could do it much more than you might.

Today goals:

Spin class and 1500 yd swim.  I am contemplating going with the run instead but given my wife is out of town tonight (and I have the kids), night run or bike is not practical (or frankly safe in ATL).

It is best to put the training in and letting injuries heal. That is what's really nice about triathlon training, you have 2 back-up disciplines if you get injured.

I would say it's a good time to start training! Why put off today.....yada yada yada.

I took my first ever spinning class last night...   It was so much fun and there were lots of hotties around...  I am going back.    I was a little concerned because I  did not think that the spinning class was going to help my biking skills      but I think it will....

I was expecting this....

but insetead I got this

I got in 45 minutes of spin (around 154 avg heart rate), followed immediately by 5k on treadmill about a 8.5 pace and around same heart rate.

For 1/2 marathon training, I saw that both plans for Galloway and Higdon had different ways of going about increasing the long run. Which way is better? Would increasing my long run a mile a week work just as well? (i.e. next week I want to run 6 miles. Should I run 7 the week after and 8 the week following?)
Also, I am on the swim team and swim an average of an hour and a half most nights of the week. If I tried to fit in four days of running a week I would be exhausted! Would 3 days a week of running still be okay.
Thanks for the advice!

Amy increasing the mileage is something that needs to be done very carefully.  As a rule of thumb it is adviced that the increase in mileage should be not greater than 10%.   Additionally you have to plan some recovery weeks...   I think that the most common mistake is increasing mileage too fast, it might lead to injury.   The main difference is that Galloway increases the mileage only on the long runs which I prefer, while Higdeon increases the mileage in both the short and long runs.    I believe that both plans are great (I prefer the Galloway plan as it is taylored for beginners), but once  you made up your mind trust the plan and get to work.

When is your half?
Good luck...
