Regular 194 Corona | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED Originally posted by dgconner154 Hey all, I have a few questions for the group: 1) Dennis's new bike got me wondering - what is everybody else riding? If you've been riding your current bike for a while, what do you like/dislike about it? 2) Does anyone belong to a local tri team/club? I've been thinking about joining one and I'm curious about others' experiences. 3) For the guys, I'm looking for recommendations for some new tri or bike shorts. I currently have a pair of 2XU tri shorts and a cheaper pair, but for longer training rides I could use a little more padding. Do you guys generally use cycling shorts/bibs or tri shorts for your training rides? GO PATS!!! 1) I ride a 2012 Trek Madone for my roadie and a Felt B16. I admit freely I enjoy riding the Trek much more than the Felt. My felt is not as "responsive" as my Trek but I think that's to be expected. I love the ride of the trek I just wish the fit was a little more aggressive. 2) My wife and I belong to a tri club but we don't have the time to do a lot of training with them. The club puts on 12 events a year that are free to club members so I have a race every month for free. The best part is we pay $30 for the year for the 2 of us! 3) I swear by 2XU for tri shorts I have the Race compression shorts and they are money. Training is a different story. I have Pearl Izumi, Pactimo, Performance and a few other bibs that have the full pad and I wear those exclusively for training. |

Regular 194 Corona | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED I have a question to those following a training plan and if there are any out there following, or have followed, the BT Beginner Ironman (free) plan...I need some input. I've been repeating the 4 week base building intro to the plan which is meant to get you used to the schedule. I've found that by Friday I am BEAT. My legs are sore, my body is sore and I have zero motivation to do anything over the weekend (training wise). Is this just part of it? Do I need to just continue on and push through it and HTFU? |

Expert 1109 Guatemala | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED Congratulations Dave, Joe, Mitch and Jim on completing the ToS, well done! Dennis, also congratulations on your HM! I particularly enjoyed your 3rd picture where you have a face of "what am I doing here" :-) 1) I started training 4 years ago with a heavy, aluminum frame, 13 year old Fuji road bike and did my first 2 triathlons with it. I then felt I had earned the right for a better bike and got a Scott CR1 carbon road bike with aerobars, which got me through my first full IM (IM Texas). I now have a Cervelo P2 w/ Ultegra components which I really like. 2) No active tri club down here in Guatemala 3) I use mainly 2XU, LG and Castelli road & tri shorts for biking and they are all pretty good. Have not tried bib shorts yet, but have heard good things abou them. Adding 1hr drainer yesterday and a 14 mile run today Dennis 01 05:36:55

I'm also still struggling through a sore throat and cold, and hoping to get my energy back soon. Now for the good news: My wife and I want to get a treadmill together This would save me an hour of driving to the gym and back, which means longer running intervals! Does anyone have recommendations for a home treadmill? |

It has varying elevations, different speeds and strong motor. Has some basic programs I never use. I didn't really want bells and whistles...just something that was powerful and could hold up to hours of running. Does anyone have recommendations for a home treadmill? A few years ago we purchased a floor model Nordic Track. There were a a few key items we wanted. 1. cushioned platform 2. it folded up for space, 3. push button incline. 4. a good motor. It has iFit. If we had paid full price and it wasn't free for a year I would have been grossly disappointed. It was interesting to vary the runs, but it would never sync well and I would rather watch Sports Center or a movie on Netflix. |

Do you guys generally use cycling shorts/bibs or tri shorts for your training rides? 1) I ride an old beat up 2005 GMC Denali (example picture http://iamtonyang.com/1204/gmc_denali_road_bike.jpg).Likes: don't have to worry about somebody stealing it (who would want it), transitions are easier cause i'm already in my running shoes. Dislikes: I get laughed at when doing rides (until i start passing up people) and it's a tank (30+lbs). Overall, I'm actually nervous about getting a different bicycle. I've been riding it so long that I am extremely comfortable with it. I know what gear works best for me for different riding conditions. I know that my backside can handle a 100+ mile ride on it. 2) I'm also curious about a tri team/club. I've been looking into them in my area, but they are not exactly in my area and requires me to drive 30+ minutes out of my way, just to meet up. please keep me posted on what your research turns up =) 3) Sorry can't help you on recommendations. I wear regular shorts during training rides (talking about cargo shorts specifically with no bicycle padding). And during triathlons, I where jammer swim shorts (once again, no padding) |

I'm now a little worried about my thigh. It feels like DOMS but it's only in the right leg. And I sort of tripped on my 6 mile easy run and added some mud to my training outfit. Since I landed in the mud I thought I was fine. Going for a " 30 min recovery run" now, and tomorrow I should know that it's just spin class tired out my leg as it starts going away. My boyfriend wants to do the rock n roll half in Dallas. It's March 22 so I might do that next depending on how Saturday goes. Thanks, Beth |

New user 262 Los Angeles County | Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - OPEN Originally posted by JoePetto Dennis - I am by no means a strong swimmer, I think I suck and I'm good with that (my 11 and 14 yr old daughters smoke me in 100s). Being slow is all about form. I see big fat guys and and young kids who weigh 65 pounds kicking the crap out of me in the pool because they know how to swim properly. As an adult onset swimmer, I will never be as a good as someone who learned early and swam often. That said, you can improve greatly by simply swimming more and swimming more structured sets. Check out free sites like swimplan.com and it will help generate good productive swim sets. Using tools like flippers, buoy and paddles all help. The critical thing to getting the most out of workouts is to have a plan for each workout, write it down and bring it to the pool. Structured sets like ladders are awesome. I think you are on to the key of it all inthat it takes a lot of effort to improve in swimming and the relative payoff for all that extra effort doesn't necessarily mean that much over the course of a 70.3. In other words, a better bike leg will save you more time than a better swim leg. Invest your hours wisely. You've made huge progress in a relatively short time and should be proud! I come from a swimming background. After 20 years of being out of the water and going from a "sprint" workout to long distance, I found that I had to relearn a lot. I learned the importance of an efficient swim stroke and making your turnovers count and numbers, numbers, numbers. Smooth Swimming: http://www.swimsmooth.com/ Numbers, Numbers, Number: if it takes me 15 strokes to get across the pool with a turnover of 1.25 seconds cause of the "stretching out" the stroke, I'm looking at 19 seconds to get across the pool. However, if it takes 17 strokes with a turnover of 1 second per stroke, I'm now at 17 seconds to get across the pool. Once again, however, I can maintain the stretching out stroke longer and not get as tired over the course of 500 meters (20 times across the pool). is 40 seconds (2 seconds for 20 lengths of the pool) worth being tired for the bicycle or is it better conserve for the bicycle ride and make up the time there. Be efficient in the pool... =) |
