soccermom15 - 2009-10-14 7:58 AM Hey guys!  I am so far behind right now.  I'll try to get caught up on what everyone's up to over the next couple of days (taking some half days at work so I should have some free time).  Work has been really busy - always seems to happen when I schedule some time off.

Anyone doing anything interesting this weekend?  I'm going to be running a 10k.  My first race since my half.  It's supposed to be pretty cold Saturday morning.  What happened to the fall weather?  We went straight from 80-90 degree days to 40-50's!  At least it's not supposed to rain.  I'm hoping to get my daughter to run the 5k that morning but don't know if she'll want to do another race so soon after her XC meet on Friday.  I think she'd do really well and maybe it'll help keep her interested in running over the winter.

Back to work - have a good week!
Janet

Hey Janet good luck this weekend. Lots of time to run now I guess, as there isn't any baseball to watch out there anymore!!

Suzy sounds like a lot of us could use your taping instructions. You'd think we all did lots of running.

Did I miss out on the run challenge somewhere in all the discussions?

Tony - my advise is to see a PT.  Going to mine has been so educational.  Yes she does stretching and massaging on my calf, but so much of my problem is stemming from my hip flexors and unequal core muscle strength due to the hip roatation.  If you are having a pain it is a sign of something else being wrong so follow the advise everyone gave me and have it checked out. You won't regret it.

A basic test everyone can do to demonstrate their stability (or lack there of in my case) in their core strength and balance is this:   stand on the flat side of a bosu ball (the large exercise ball that is cut in half); stand on one leg, slightly bent, with the other leg bent back - and simply balance!  Repeat on other leg. Try not to look down at the ball for your balance. I was shaking like a leaf from the ankle down!  You can feel it in your hips, glutes and feet especially.  My therapist said the exercise exagerates the motion of landing and pushing off of one foot at a time while running. If you foot is very wobbly during this exercise the it is off balance when you run as well.  So if you take that "fighting for balance" action and multiply it by the milage you run it will certainly add up.  I thought it was very interesting.

Hey All....

Here is my taping and no comments about my foot! Basically the narrow tape goes around your outter foot and serves as the anchor point for the other two tapes to hold.  The second shot shows two-three clear strips that run vertical from the ball of your foot to the heel (this tape is stretchy and I pull it a little tighter).  Then I take 2-3 strips of the white tape and run it horizontal (not stretchy)  Neither are super tight, but they provide more stability when running and keep your foot in a neutral position when sleeping.  There are several taping techniques, but this is the one I found works best for me.  Questions?

One other thing, probably don't need three different tapes....but I like the stretchy tape for the vertical position to hold the plantar more firmly.

I guess it's IM time when some people are busting out a 100 mile ride, 3800 in the pool and a ~3.5 mile run on a Tuesday.

You rock Linda!!!

I get to leave for Vegas tomorrow.  I'm working the last half of my shift tonight, only 10 hours to go.  Then finish packing and fly to Vegas with my wife.  Pumpkinman Sprint Tri on Saturday.  This is my last race this year.  Though I do plan to compete in 1 or 2 masters swim competitions.

Get back in town Sunday evening.  Then Monday a friend is flying in from Germany and staying with us for a week.  Tuesday we have our 2x annual Agility Test at work... and I took the day half of this shift off, so I only work the night half.  I've held the fastest time for the agility test the last 2 years (4 tests).  Then 3 days off and back to work Saturday.  I love my work schedule.  So over the next 9 days I'm only working a 12 hour shift Tues night.

Good luck to those who are racing!  Race smart.

Ohh and when I get back, remind me that I need to look into training periodization.  This next few weeks I'd like to start planning out next seasons training plans.  Not the day to day, but more like week by week volume/frequency/intensity.  This whole 'critical volume' thing has really got me thinking about what I want to accomplish next season.

This Garmin cadence is going to be the death of me.
Riding the trainer tonight...started off fine. Everything synced up no problem. Speed, cadence,HR all working fine.
But I kept getting"LAP ERROR" flashing every 5 seconds i swear for the last 30 minutes or so.
I could not get rid of it. Thoughts?

Did you turn off the GPS tracking part of the unit?

I didn't originally...But when it asked me if I was indoors I said yes. So it would have been turned off after that time.

Yeah, it was pretty sad.  But we kind of figured something like that might happen.  The last couple weeks of the season they just hadn't been playing well.  They seemed to use up all their offense in one game and then couldn't hit worth a darn for the next 3-4.  Oh well, there's always next yearSmile.

In your control panel you have an option to put in equipment, I enter my shoes then how long I think they are good for.  I get alerted when close.

Need to go back and put in my new shoes, the ones I have listed are my old ones.

Yahoo. I get to work from home today. Slept in until 7:00 am. and was working by 7:30 after a leisurely coffee and breakfast. What a treat. The downside is that I have a dentist and doctors appointments this afternoon. I'm going to take full advantage of not travelling today and do a mid day swim too. I could get used to this kinda work. Now if I could just get working down to 3/4 days a week it would be much better

Good luck on your race Jeremy and have a bit of fun in Vegas to.

They usually have a different challenge focus each month.  Check in a week or two before the end of the month to get the details on the next challenge and signup if you are interested.  The new challenge should be a sticky at top until it starts.

Burrr, chilly, chilly - mid 40s and rainy here.  What is this Madison or something?

I did get my run in through the cold rain.  I have a feeling that Tony will be indoors today b/c he melts in the rain.  ;-)

Yes I will be running inside today.  Talked to coach yesterday and he agreed.  Try to do the workouts, if ankle hurts then stop.

8 miles today, there is a 1/9th mile track so 72 laps there lol or some time on the treadmill which I can't remember the last time I got on one.

Any thoughts about which would be easier on the ankle?  The track is pretty squishy.

Only caution I can think of with the track is the strain on the angle of running in a circle.  Maybe change directions half way through to change the angle.  Boy, wouldn't that screw everyone up to be running the wrong way on a track.

I hate it when people do that at the track, I guess they do it for the reson you described but very annoying to look up and have someone running straight at you.
