dalessit - 2009-10-17 8:10 PM I am getting really sick of this weather.  Have 10 miles to run tomorrow before the game but it has been raining + 40 degrees every day just about this week.

Guess back to the treadmill tomorrow at 8am....

I guess it finally moved from Texas to you all.  Nice day here.  Got in a short run this evening.  Time to get back to the pool next week.  I can't be a slacker my whole life....

I have had lower back pain for a couple years.  Usually happens when I bend over to pick something up and don't bend my knees.  But nothing back-wise from running.  Is it a sharp or dull pain?

Tough to diagnose because so many things can cause lower back pain while running.  Muscularly, common culprits are tight hamstrings or a weak core.  These are both easy to remedy so I would probably start there. Even if it isnt the answer you will be better off.  Other possibilities are poor pevlic alignment (do you run with your butt pushed out like so many people do? if so, tuck your pelvis and try to stand up a little straighter while running).  Lastly, look at your shoes. Where are they worn? Quite often overpronation can cause problems.  If this is the case you can either try a more stable shoe or get some inserts for your current shoes.

DougRob - 2009-10-17 8:32 PM I ran again today. Since my 12 week plan ended I have returned to my old training. In this I run 5-6 time a week. The plan had me doing 14-16 miles a week. Apparently based on my result that is too little for me. So after 2 days rest I got back to it and ran the last 4 days. Today the first half hour was pure joy. It felt like I was floating on air. The second half was not as good as the extra miles started to get to me, but I was 18 minutes faster for 10K than I was last weekend. I know I did not swim or run before and I had no back issues, but it is clear to me that I need at least 20 miles a week and the running will remain fun. I hope to get back to at least 30-40 miles/week.

I also came up with a CT game where I try to get as far on a course before I fall 1 mile behind the fast little pr*ck pacer guy.

Doug

watch your running Doug. You can over do it and that may cause some results to be not as good as you want. Give your body enough time to recover and repair itself. Sometimes running everyday is not a good thing. Especially when you are cross trainnig in other disciplines.

I have experienced that. Work on your abs and core strength first, as long as it is not a medical problem. Since I started putting regular ab and core work into my training .. no problems with the back. Having said that I would put more emphasis on what Suzy is saying. She is a running guru in this group.

I've had that pain before especially on longer runs when my body starts to tire.  I suspect it's a weak core issue.  It was one of those things I wanted to work on this marathon plan but core work always seemed to be the first thing cut from the plan.  Keep it stretched as well.

My back pretty much hurts all the time, so welcome to the club.  I feel like it is muscular on both sides where some of the muscles connect to the pelvis.  I don't know that, but that is the way it feels.  I am going to try to do some back / core excercises and see if I can make it better.  When I first started running, even after a half mile or so, I had to stop and stretch it out because it was so tight.  I have gotten past that, but there are still some issues.

oh yeah!  i have lots of issues there.  they come a wife forgetting to by charcoal before a saints / giants game.  dogs forgetting they are supposed to go to the bathroom outside.  interns screwing something up. etc. etc.  a good run usually cures it.  hope this helps.

One other thought on the back is a tight psoas.  Its kind of tough to release. I usually use my elbow in the area between my torso and my front leg  or put a ball under my back towards to QL to try to release the other side.

Totally taking the over on that game!! Could be a 60-59 game the way those 2 teams play.

Andy, I agree with everything everyone says on the back. You may want to look into orthotics too. They totally changed my gait when I started running. Eased alot of pressure on my back.

stretch out the legs as much as possible throughout the day. I did have the same problem but after going to the doc and my massage therapist they both suggested leg stretches and now i'm fine.

Thanks for all the responses.  At this point in time I am thinking it is weak core muscles.  Time to get back on the serious 30-45 min core work on the non-running mornings... Maybe some yoga would help as well.  Anyone ever done "hot yoga"?  My buddy does and swears by it, but I am a little skeptical.

some folks around here do it and swear by it as well.  but i also think the end of the season might be a reason.  maybe its just a little sore from all the hard work.

I suspect you may have mentioned it in the past but where did you get your trainer. I am looking into one for this winter. The stationary at the gym is just not good enough for long distance training.

Sorry a thread on Triathlon talk that made me think -"How did your season go" - If I had to sum it up in one word it would be "undertrained"  Here is my season recap (still have at least a 5k and a half mary to go this year...)

5 bike rallys - from 30, 40, 42, 63, and 100miles - thanks to John for the support during the century!

6 sprints or supersprints completed.  Improved time on Rockwall course from May to Aug by 12 minutes.  Improved time on Lynn Creek by 5 minutes in one month.  Missed last sprint of the year due to sickness.

1 half mile OWS race - finished last

1 750m/5k aquathon - finished second in AG (out of three)

First olympic - did not meet time goal - but perserved on the course!

Signed up for a HIM next year!

Overall a great year for me, especially starting from nowhere at the end of March.  Oh yeah, I lost 30lbs along the way...

There will not be much of an offseason for me - from half mary into HIM training....

Thanks to this group for all the support, advice, and encouragement along the way!  I don't know how to express the gratitude I feel to all of you!

This might be part of the problem.  I strained my back about 3 yrs ago and it only manifests when I've been taking it easy for too long.  I think when things (core) start to get soft, my posture and support goes to t.u. and that causes my back to hurt.

As far as the 'hot yoga' - be careful not to overdue it.  There is a potential for injury due to over-stretching your muscles when they are that warm/loose.

I knew my ears were ringing!  Thanks for the compliment, Suzy, but you are still THE running guru in this group.  I agree, though about the core work.  Even doing just 15 minutes of core exercises and hip flexor strengthening 2-3x a week has made a big difference in not getting those aches and pains in the glutes and lower back.  I especially love the bird dog pose and any type of planks.  Shoulder bridges are really good, too.  Side lunges and scissor leg lifts are also good.  Feel free to pm me if you would like the link to any of these.

I went to cheer a friend and a few cousins' wives at the Nike Half and Full Marathon today and was able to catch the #2 runner in the 1 mile homestretch!  Very exciting...I think she finished close to 3:00 hours.  Tough course, there are some good old fashioned San Francisco hills for this course.  Fun to be in the rooting section, trying to spot friends and family, instead of the other way 'round

okay, off to hydrate for my 18 mile run tomorrow.  yikes.
