Thanks, guys! I had a good race, and so much fun. Picture running through the woods at night with a full moon and the bobbing headlamps of other runners snaking along the trail. I saw Jayne and got to meet her daughter and her friend who was there running her first trail race. And I only wiped out once! It was a pretty good one - I stepped in a hole on a downhill section and went flying. Nice big bruise on my knee today as a souvenir. Good times! |

Expert 847 Brevard, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Hey everybody. First of all, Congrats to Julia for an amazing run last Saturday. She is a running machine. If you don't trail run......in the dark.......when it's 20 degrees.......and slick.....you can't begin to understand how fast she is!! I went into the race not sure if I would do more than one lap (6.5 mi.). I've been having issues with my right knee since around the beginning of December (training for my 50k). The body held up, but I could sure tell that I've been resting and recovering for the last month. I had a great time running with a co-worker. She had never done a trail run before and she did great...It didn't take long to have her howling at the full moon with me. I'm the one gasping for air on the right P.S. I'm ready for a race where the water at the aid stations doesn't give me a headache because it's frozen. I remember telling one of the volunteers, "If this is going to give me a brain freeze, couldn't you at least serve some margaritas?" |

Veteran 287 Tucson | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Hey, all. Looks like I will need to back off a bit on my training. I have several aches and pains that seem to be getting worse. Two are from running and another one I'm not sure what it is from. I have been running in custom orthotics for about 5 months since I have hurt my right hip flexor 3 times from running. My right hip flexor is great but now I have a bunch of new issues. I tried running with out the orthotics last week before things got out of hand. Felt fine. Don't even know what to do at this point other than take a break and let things heal. I am pretty certain that I don't have any pains from swimming so I will do that the rest of this week and then evaluate things. All I know is I don't want to keep banging away until I'm out of comission for 8 weeks. Been there done that way too many times already. Thanks for reading. Just wanted to vent a bit. Feeling a bit down right now. |

Feeling a bit down right now. Really sorry to hear that. Did you have a break in period for those orthotics? When I used to use them, I broke them in over a month period so my body could adjust to the changes. If you did that and still have issues, I would consult the PT or Dr. who prescribed them. Need to figure out the root cause or you'll be back where you started in a few months. Hang in there. |

Veteran 287 Tucson | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed Suzy, your vacay looks awsome! I am jealous! No, I didn't really have a break in period for the orthotics. The first few months were fine as I was only running twice a week. When I eased into 4 days a week is when the problems started. Mild but there. I should go back and see the guy who made them. You are right. I prefer my current state of denial. Pop a few ibuprofen and all feels good. :-P Thanks for your feedback. |

Suzy, your beach looks fabulous...wish we were all there! Margo, sorry to hear about your setback. Maybe the PT can help and give you some stretching and strengthening exercises to do once you are ready again. I have some that really help me...shoot me a pm if you are interested.

Give it up......Who's racing this weekend? What's the plan? Let's also talk about training plans. Which plans are you using? Where did you find them? If you're training for something specific in addition to triathlon races (think bike race, ultra , etc), how do you modify or combine plans?

No racing here. I start Fink's Intermediate plan April 7th (30 weeks out) and my focus until then is to be well-prepared for it and injury-free. For now, I am loosely following a maintenance plan I created on this site.

If you're training for something specific in addition to triathlon races (think bike race, ultra , etc), how do you modify or combine plans? No racing for me Right now, I'm following a 50mi run plan, but I'm having trouble finding the time to get all the miles in. I'm also swimming and biking twice a week, just to keep my base. I need warmer weather and more hours of daylight. Or, I need to toughen up and get out there in the dark. I was at the gym for a 4:30 am treadmill run this morning followed by a 50 min spinning class. I'm probably not going to follow an actual triathlon plan because of my running focus this year, but I will pull some specific workouts off the BT training plans as I get closer to my HIM and as I have more time (read: when school is out in June/July). |

Always a girl scout Come on up to Indiana and I'll hold your hand too. Edited by jfought 2013-01-30 4:57 PM |

Champion 5522 Frisco, TX | Subject: RE: Swbkrun mentor group - Closed No racing for me either....
As far as training plans - nothing concrete right now. I am trying to bike at a least 6 days a week to build towards this summer's 500mi tour. Plan to swim 3 times a week - once again, just building it back up. Strength training two days a week in order to maintain muscle mass and build some strength... I am trying to do about 20 mins of yoga a day as well... I will probably dial back a bit on the bike in a few weeks and try running - hopefully my knee will hold up... if I can run, then I should be good to do couple of sprints with this training schedule, if all systems are go, then I will dial up an Olympic plan from the site here... |
