CLOSED amschrod - 2013-02-12 9:44 AM David, I don't know enough to give you specific advice, but I do know that Jason's advice is excellent. I read tri talk a lot, and I always pay close attention when Jason posts because he knows his stuff. Rich, great job on the century. I'm looking forward to watching you on your first tri. Fred, too bad about the sinuses. I know it's hard, but try to get some rest! I spent the last few months carefully building my running back to over 20mpw. Just did basic 3 week builds following the 10% rule followed by a recovery week. Did 26 miles last week, this week is a recovery week and I feel great physically, and just as important, I feel great mentally. Keep up the great work everybody! Thank you sir ! |

Member 108 | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED With my first spring tri (reverse) slowly approaching, what kind of brick pace and distance should I be doing during these last 2 weeks ? I already have been doing semi-bricks during the weekdays where I would either do a short 30 min run or ride after my swim session or a 30min run after a 30-45min ride session. I plan to do a brick or 2 during this upcoming long weekend so was wondering if I should do a longer ride followed by a longer run as well as an exact race distance (15mile ride, 3 mile run) one? How would you taper the last week ? I did not really follow a structured tri sprint program the past few months as I wanted to swim as much as I can and was also preparing for my recent century and halves. I am not overly concerned with the swim portion in this "beginner tri" is 200m and in the pool. The tri is held at a training base so run/bike routes will be nice and flat....appropriately called "Race on the Base"=) Thanks. |

Expert 1157 Tremonton, Utah | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED Good Morning all. I'm feeling proud of myself this morning! 3 workouts in a row, and 4 mile run NO WALKING! I'm sure that something will happen tomorrow now that will screw up my record. Good luck to Judi who is racing this weekend! Tri2Smile: My very first triathlon was a reverse as well. I'm not sure what your distances are in training, but sounds like from your description you're well trained. With the Century behind you, you've got a solid base, so you should do well. I'd push the run and bike a bit during the race. You'll get the most time there, and with only 200 yards in the pool, you shouldn't negatively impact your total time much if you're pretty well spent at the end. I did have a problem on my first race with some cramping in the calves toward the end of the bike, but it passed quickly, and I was rarely riding beyond 15 miles a ride at that time, so I attribute that to lack of training. With long bikes under your belt, you shouldn't have a problem there. And since it's a flat course your should kick tail. My first had a killer hill that you had to ride up twice. So killer that many had to walk up it. UGH! Good luck though... You'll do great

All jokes aside, I did get in my long run for the week, 3.29mi. I'm happy with the distance. I need to get out and find a new route. My current route is getting boring and one of the houses has recently obtained a very large, very aggressive dog. I love dogs, but thlis one scares the bajesus out of me everytime I shuffle past. They seem to have one of those electric fences, but I don't trust it! Keep up the good work everyone and good luck to all who are racing this weekend! |

What you do in the last 10 days will not have a material effect on fitness. I tend to focus on short brick sessions with an emphasis on working transitions. I've sometimes had double bricks thrown at me at a "as fast I can go the distance" pace. The Bike/Run/Bike/Run are hard, but powerful. |

This is what happens when you keep complaining about swimming to your husband who is newly obsessed with tri... He has figured out a way that I can make it to masters swimming - probably 2 nights a week - where there's a special emphasis on technique. As irritating as some of this is (e.g., having to swap bikes on and off the trainer all the time), I'm really happy he is working so hard to make this happen well for me. |

Extreme Veteran 692 England | Subject: RE: Fred D and Queen Zipp's SWIM, BIKE RUN consistency thread.... CLOSED The weather appears to be trying its hardest to sabotage my training at the moment. On Sunday we were forecast heavy snow, so we switched the long ride to Saturday, only to have no snow on Sunday at all. And then today, out of nowhere we had snow and high winds so ice and snow drifts all over the place. As a result the track session was cancelled. I decided I didn't want to lose my run so I came into work early and did it on the treadmill. I'm just hoping the snow doesn't last long. The forecast is pretty warm for the next few days so it should melt. I'm having a little mid-month review of my goals. I'm pleased with how my tri sports are going. I'm maintaining the consistency and feel that I'm successfully increasing my intensity and time at a sustainable rate. My goal for the core work (6x per week) appears to have been a little over hopeful. The time required on top of my other training just isn't working out. So for the rest of the month I'm going to reduce it to 4x per week and see if I can manage that. Good luck to those racing this weekend. I'm kind of jealous - the first races here aren't until may. I love having that to look forward to. But I'm getting my year planned at the moment. |

That's the point! Racing is hard work, so simulate it. You can totally cut down the distance/time if you think it's too much to start with. I wasn't sure what to give you given your race distance. I am typically doing these for HIMs or IM and they are longer, but more appropriate for the race distance. Give it a whirl! |
