Hey all, I have a few questions for the group:
1) Dennis's new bike got me wondering - what is everybody else riding? If you've been riding your current bike for a while, what do you like/dislike about it?
2) Does anyone belong to a local tri team/club? I've been thinking about joining one and I'm curious about others' experiences.
3) For the guys, I'm looking for recommendations for some new tri or bike shorts. I currently have a pair of 2XU tri shorts and a cheaper pair, but for longer training rides I could use a little more padding. Do you guys generally use cycling shorts/bibs or tri shorts for your training rides?

1. I have a Cervelo P1 - I like it a lot and it does everything I need it to, it shifts well and will go as fast as I can push the pedals. I also have a Klein Attitude mountain bike that I have had since 1997. Its all original and I have only replaced the frame, fork, shifters, brakes, and wheels. I want to do some group rides come spring so am looking for a cheap road bike. I am currently considering an older RockyMountain road bike because they primarily make mountainbikes and I like to be odd like that.

2. There is actually a really good tri club in my city but I work an hour away so I would never be able to make their work outs so I never joined. I swim at lunch and typically bike and run later at night so my schedule is a little atypical for a triathlete. I have also been know to bike the 50miles into work a few times per week during the summer.

3. I have some orca tri shorts which I race in or train in only when all my other shorts are dirty, I have a pair of decent store brand shorts and I have 3 pairs of crazy cheap ebay bike shorts. The Ebay shorts have actually been quite good. My last ones were bib shorts that I snagged for only $20.

A day off is good sometimes. Rest/recovery is viral for improvements in fitness. All of us need to remember that.

That was after a day off! I think i was just dehydrated and my legs might still be full of lead from ToS!

It looks like January was a good month for everyone!

Today did not go well, but I managed to last 30 min. On a good note, I've improved at maintaining a set pace, so today was 96% in zone.

Nice run Dennis, and congrats everyone on a solid month of training. I had to swap my training session again today for shoveling snow. I'm also still struggling through a sore throat and cold, and hoping to get my energy back soon.

Now for the good news: My wife and I want to get a treadmill together This would save me an hour of driving to the gym and back, which means longer running intervals!

Does anyone have recommendations for a home treadmill?

A few years ago we purchased a floor model Nordic Track. There were a a few key items we wanted. 1. cushioned platform 2. it folded up for space, 3. push button incline. 4. a good motor.
It has iFit. If we had paid full price and it wasn't free for a year I would have been grossly disappointed. It was interesting to vary the runs, but it would never sync well and I would rather watch Sports Center or a movie on Netflix.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. James, what Nordic Track model do you have? They seem to get very good reviews online and they have some models that are within our budget.

I have a question to those following a training plan and if there are any out there following, or have followed, the BT Beginner Ironman (free) plan...I need some input.

I've been repeating the 4 week base building intro to the plan which is meant to get you used to the schedule. I've found that by Friday I am BEAT. My legs are sore, my body is sore and I have zero motivation to do anything over the weekend (training wise). Is this just part of it? Do I need to just continue on and push through it and HTFU?

I tried to check out your training log to get an idea for volume, pace, etc. You have it restricted to certain users. Can you open it up and we can see how/what you're foing and weigh in with any thoughts we have?

Fixed. My logs are up to date. I've only been keeping track since the new year.

What did your training look like beginning the BT Base building plan? How many times per week would you work out? How many times for each discipline? How long were the workouts? What intensity or perceived exertion are your workouts now? What about last year?

Before the base building plan started I was doing unstructured workouts hoping to maintain my fitness from Silverman in October and HITS Palm Springs 70.3 in December. I was working out 5-8 times a week depending on conflicts around the holidays. I would run 3x a week (typically 3-7 mile runs around a 9:30 pace), Bike 1-2x a week (1 around 20-30 miles & 1 around 60 miles @ 18-20 mph), & I haven't swam since HITS. Last year I ran 524 miles, and Biked about 2600.

The intensity I've noticed an increase in is my running. I've felt AMAZING on my runs until last week when I started feeling a bit of fatigue. My ankles feel like they are sprained for the first 10-15 min of my runs then that goes away. My runs recently have been about 30 sec/mile faster that before and I've upped my mileage from 60 miles in December to 75 in January. I ran an average of 55-65 miles a month last year so I didn't think that the increase in mileage would affect me. But I feel it. The intensity with my swims is there simply because I've slacked off for a month.

And with the increased number of work outs and mileage, I expected to have lost a pound or 2 over the course of January but I've gained about 3 lbs. My diet is about 80% there and I'm dialing it in day by day.

With this plan can I move my run days around so I have a day of recovery in between? Or is it best if I slow down and STICK TO THE PLAN as it's laid out? I know this is a lot and I'll give you whatever info you need. I appreciate you guys looking at this and tearing me up. I'm coach-able and willing to take input. Thanks!!

GOOOD LAAAAWD WHAT HAVE I DONE!

Just kidding, I figured I would go ahead and invest some hard earned money to help me stay motivated and focused on this years main goal!! I am actually pretty excited and am looking forward to increasing volume in my training. I think Jackie will be proud to know I have 2 gallons of ULTRAGEN Recovery on hand so you guys won't have to hear me complain about how tired I am.

I've been reading "Be Iron Fit" by Don Fink and I think I might use one of his plans with some slight modifications for the 70.3. The 70.3 is actually part of his training plan leading up to an eventual 140.6.

Mitch- Did you use a BT training plan for you HIM last year?

Dennis:

I used a plan from Matt Fitzgeralds big book of triathlon plans. There were about 8 or 9 levels of HIM plans and I picked one near the middle. It has all the workouts delineated but the book can be a bit of a bear to follow and get through.

If I do a HIM this year I will probably follow a HIM swim plan, a TR HIM bike plan and then layer in the BarryP running plan with some speed sessions 1 or 2 days a week.

Subject: RE: Consistency Equals Success - CLOSED
Tour of Sufferlandria - continues delivering the suffering. I decided to take a very easy ride on the trainer last night and got 3minutes in before I once again got huge cramping in my thigh. I quit the ride. Went for a 1hr massage tonight and was told my muscles were very very tight. I have to go back on Monday. I might try to get to the pool tomorrow to do some laps with a pull bouy and hit the hot tub.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
