Wetsuit Wow!

I usually swim at a 2min/100m pace and can "sprint" 300m at about a 1:52 pace. This morning with the wetsuit on I did 400m on 1:46 pace without even working hard! I cut a full minute off my usual time at that distance. Once I took off the suit it became obvious to me how poor my usual body position is with my sinking legs. How do I improve that?

btw I body glided my calves today and it was easier to get out of the suit.

Nice job!!!  Isn't the wetsuit fun!

As for the swimming, when I focus on swimming with my chest lower in the water, my legs will rise.

That's great advice. Think of it as pushing your chest lower, not just bending at the waist to get your chest lower.

By the way, I didn't mean for my previous post to say "Kick!!", as that would be horrible advice. Dang sensoring... :-)

another Saturday, another brick, another new route

This route felt a bit easier than the last two, and my legs felt better (best ever) coming off the bike. However, about a mile in my quads started burning and the run became difficult.

We had some patchy rain this morning so I got rained on a little at the start of my ride and then again early in the run. It felt good during the run

I feel that I've pretty much done everything I can to be ready for next week's triathlon. I'm feeling good, strong, and confident. I just hope the water isn't too cold!

Yep, I think you have done everything you can to prepare for your race.  Take it easy this week so you have lots of energy come race day.  You are going to do great!

I took the day off today.  Still not feeling great.  I hope this week will prove to be much better.  My training is going to be cut short this week since I'm going to Alaska for a long weekend.  We are going to a wedding.  I wish we could spend longer up there but it just isn't going to happen.  Oh well.  I hope everyone had a good weekend!

Tracy, I hope you start feeling better soon. I feel horrible still also. It's such a bummer when you want to go out and do things, but your body just won't let you. I hope it's not one of those colds that hang on for weeks and weeks. I did buy a Neti pot over the weekend and hope to see some sinus relief soon.

Have fun in Alaska. And since you can't do anything about a shorter training week, just give in and enjoy yourself!

I checked in on the AZ crew throughout the day yesterday too. It sure was inspirational to watch. If you're determined to do it, I have no doubt that you will kick some major heiny.

Haha, I have to wonder if we've been drinking the same "crazy" water... :-)

Two women from the Team Estrogen forum started yesterday's IMAZ, but neither finished. Apparently the wind was brutal during the bike and when it finally abated the heat was terrible. They're moving this race to November for the future.

Dang, sorry I missed the IM yesterday! Shaun, I say go for it! If it works with your Guard schedule I agree with Sarah you'd kick butt!

Have fun in Alaska, Tracy! Hope you start feeling better soon!

Nice Job on the wetsuit swim, Nicole! I haven't gotten mine in the water yet, but I'm looking forward to the float factor. I used to think I was a really talented floater cause I could just float all day with no effort back when I was 40% body fat. Now I can't float at all, so much for my "talent"LOL

I had a pretty exciting bike ride yesterday. Gary and I went up to Glacier National Park and rode the Goint to the Sun HWY. It is closed to vehicles this time of year but hikers and bikers can use it. It was an absolutely beautiful, sunny, 70 degree day. We rode out as far along the road as we could, past the "avalanche danger continue at your own risk" sign until we came to the unplowed section of the road which was still 5ft deep with snow. When we turned and came around the corner about 200ft before passing the sign again, there was a huge avalanche across the road blocking it off. It was about 100ft wide and 20ft tall at the deepest point 5-6ft at the shortest point (of all the times to forget my camera). We carried our bikes over it and helped a family get their baby trailer and MT bikes over. Gary and I were both glad our new Javelins are so nice and light Also glad no one was hurt and the avalanche was passable!

I feel so sad for everyone who wasn't able to finish yesterday. It sounds like there were a lot of DNFs and it was just really hard conditions. I had originally thought that IMAZ would be my first ironman, but I'm rethinking that. Flat does not always equal easy... Maybe something like IMCdA -- hilly but cool weather. Or maybe IMNZ in conjunction with a honeymoon. :-) However, likely not until 2010 for me. I need mucho more time to get a better base!

Roni, that's the craziest thing I've heard in awhile! An avalanche on your bike ride!!! Montana springs are so silly, aren't they. Glad to hear that everyone was okay. And good on you guys for helping other people over the snow.

One of the DNF's I know said this:

If you are wondering how tough things were out on the course today, all you have to do is check out the number of DNF's at today's race.

Of the 2035 athletes who started the swim, 2033 finished in time to start the bike.

Of those, 1,874 managed to get through the hot and windy bike course.

1,830 of those started the run.

With just under 40 minutes to go, 1,574 of those athletes have finished.

The high attrition rate is no-doubt due to the extreme heat we experienced here today, coupled with the high winds.

IMAZ was similarly windy last year. Probably not best for a 1st IM. KSH is doing Kentucky as her first.

Wow!!!  That is really amazing!!!  That really shows you how important it is to research your intended race location.  This years temps were a little unusual, though.  Congrats to everyone who gave it their best shot!

Did you hear about the swim during last years IMCdA?  The water was so rough, the race officials said people could do a duathlon instead!  My friend's husband did manage to get through the swim last year.  He said it was the scariest swim ever!  He's a fantastic swimmer, too!  Each race has it's own set of challenges.

On a different note, I have some nutrition questions. I posted in the weight loss forum, but didn't get any responses.

What is the proper ratio to shoot for regarding carbs/protein/fat. I've heard 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat. Is this correct?

I find this very difficult to acheive. Over the last couple of weeks my average has been 51% carbs, 19% protein, and 30% fat. This past week I have made an effort to up my protein and decrease my fat, but it hasn't made much of a difference.

A typical days food is something like this:
Breakfast = oatmeal, fruit, yogurt
Snack = nuts, fruit, maybe a string cheese
Lunch = raw veggies, hummus, turkey sandwich
Snack = half PB&J, string cheese
Dinner = pork loin, veggie, bread or pasta
Other = Luna bar or other half PB&J before working out, more recently a protein shake after working out, sometimes 4-6oz red wine at night. Also, there is sometimes a fair amount of "cheating" going on. I'm already trying to be really good about eliminating that.

What suggestions do you guys have to get my diet more inline with what it should be?

Hey Sarah!

Here are the basic guidelines.

Protein=12-20%

Carbohydrate=55-65%

Fat=25-30%

Endurance athletes need to consume more protein than weightlifters.  Fat is necessary for some vitamins.  Carbohydrates give us our energy.  Be sure to be aware of high glycemic versus low glycemic carbohydrate sources.

Does this answer your question?

i been tring to stay around p-25 c-60 f-15 but i am more like what you put down Tracy . the fats i try to stick mostly with poly or monounsaturated and the EFA's from mostly flax meal and nuts . carbs also help us keep water in us for every gram of carbs we eat it will also keep a gram of water with it where protein dont . but we need water to help absorbe the protein . shakes yea they taste better with milk and you add a little protein and some amino's but to get them to your muscles quick water is the way to go

Thanks guys. You helped a lot with what % of each I should be getting. Thank goodness, because the ratios I was thinking is hard to attain.

What foods do you like to help you get more protein and less fat. I simply cannot swallow anymore boneless skinless chicken! I'm getting bored with my meals and need some new ideas!

Fish!!!!!  Salmon is yummy!  How about a fresh tuna steak!  Oh, and tuna noodle casserole with a bag of frozen mixed vegis stirred in is one of my favorite one-pot meals!  Sushi is a great one too!  Just hold off on the tempura batter.

Oh jeez!  Tuna noodle casserole is soooooo easy.  Cook the noodles, dump it in a casserole dish with a couple cans of tuna, cream of mushroom soup, a little milk, dried herbs of your choice, a big bag of frozen mixed vegis, cover and bake at 350 until its hot.  Top with a little cheddar cheese and you've got an easy meal.  Yummy!!!
