Hi everyone! It's nice to see posts from some folks that we haven't *seen* in a while

Glad to know that even if not everyone has time to post, that you are getting value out of the group - we all learn and participate in different ways!

Jeff - Yanti has a special knack for things like finding hot pics! (and oh yes they are hot! ;)) - great job on the positive thoughts and getting a new workout plan underway!

Leslie - there is never TMI in the Manatee group, that's what we are here for. I can really relate to what you are saying about the lack of sunshine - for whatever reason this year I suffered less from it than in previous years - suffice it to say - you are not alone

Will - I know you've been getting in some nice workouts and a new job is always busy! Hope it is going well!

Dolores - You GO GIRL! the Vineman! You will do great!

Sunshine - you are doing great! The whole gym thing is tough - just keep doing what you can :)

Erin - Happy Anniversary! ;)

Yanti - So sorry to hear about your dad - but so happy you get to go home for 3 weeks! I think the trip home will be very good for your soul - jmho (ps, did TAN get yanked again? LOL)

Melissa - Good luck this weekend - hope the toe is doing ok! I have to be honest I smile every time I think about your race pic! It was so great!

Renee - again, congratulations on your race! you are truly an inspiration!

I briefly *talked* to Steve, it sounds like he has had a lot going on, but should be back soon.

Beth, do you know if he's still planning to race this weekend? Wow, sounds like we're a crazy-busy group. I hope everyone's taking good care of themselves. Leslie: Hang in there, girl. You've worked so hard these past few months and seen some incredible accomplishments -- it's OK to rest up a little and go easy on yourself.

I'm pretty sure he is - he mentioned the upcoming race and being very excited about it.

Good luck, Beth!!!  Can't wait for your RR!!

I am hopefully doing a solstice mountain bike ride as long as it doesn't dump rain. Not a race by any means, just something to do!  Trying to decide on a race next weekend.

In the meantime, I will be rooting for Beth! YAY!!

I am guilty of reading and not posting myself here lately.   My business is jumping these days so I have been on the phone or online this week, more than usual. Good thing for me overall!!

I have been working out, with no particular plan at the moment.  I imported an Oly plan that will begin in August to prep for my first Oly race in the fall at the HiFi race in Galveston.  I will just keep busy and work on base and speed between now and then.

Travel next week for me so training will be whatever I can manage to do but I am rededicating to strength workouts when I can't s/b/r due to the area or lack of access.  I plan to pack my resistance bands in my luggage.  I also need to concentrate on some weight loss.  My cholesterol is up and the dr. is giving me 3 months to try to make lifestyle adjustments to bring it down without drugs.  I already eat pretty well, and of course, I exercise so I don't think I will make much difference between now and the deadline.  My weight is the biggest one so I will really work on this one.  I would like to drop another 20#.  The strength training should kick this process up a notch so we'll see how it goes.  Hubby has started walking 3x per week and he and I are doing the strength stuff together as well. He's still looking for work so that has been a bit of a strain but we are dealing with it and keeping a very positive attitude about it all.

Take care, dear Manatees!  You are all now up to date on me.  And I will try to get caught up on all of you while I am out traveling next week.  BT is my entertainment while on the road.

If you are racing this weekend, do the best you can and enjoy the experience!!!!

Wow it has been so long since I have been here.  First I would like to thank those that sent inspirations even though I wasn't posting or training.  I have been dealing with a hamstring issue for over a month now and it is very frustrating ever time I think it is close to being good to go I try something and find out it isn't.  I have a race in like 2 weeks and am  not sure if I should withdraw or just try and limp through it.  actually a busy couple of weeks coming up I have a 10K and 2 sprints from the 1st to 13 of July and have not done any training not sure if I can do them.  Good to read about others races and stuff.  But while injured was hard to come on here and read on all the stuff I was unable to do so I tried to avoid it as much as possible but I think that is what also led to being a little depressed so I am changing that and trying to get re-motivated and back to the grind.

Good luck to all that are racing!!

Hey Manatees. I had a nice lunch with Terri today, but it was far too short! I hit some crazy azz traffic driving down. It took me 2 hours to make a drive that would normally only take 1 hour. Since packet pickup only went from Noon until 3pm, I had to cut things short with Terri in order to make it down to Del Mar in time to pick up my race packet for tomorrow.

This was probably my least favorite packet pickup of any race I've done thus far. It's an Iron Girl event, but is being done in conjunction with the San Diego County Fair. We had to check in at one booth out in the parking lot to get our ticket to get into the fair. Then we had to wait in another looooooooong line to go through security to actually get into the fairgrounds proper to make our way to the expo. Of course, that was on the complete opposite side of the fairgrounds from the point where we had to enter.

The expo itself was very small. There were only about a dozen booths, including the Iron Girl branded stuff. I did manage to find a few goodies for myself though. My favorite purchase of the day was an Iron Girl transition bag. They also have it in pink, but since I'm soooooo not a pink girl, I got the navy version.

I've been looking at them for a while at the Iron Girl online store. I decided to wait and see if they would have them at this race to save myself some shipping. I'm glad I did! They're $50 on the IG site, but they were selling them at the Expo for $35. So, not only did I save the shipping fees, but I got it for $15 less, too!

Well, I guess that's it for me for now. I need to do some web surfing to scope out what food options I have near the hotel for dinner. After that, the plan is to just take it nice & easy tonight and relax.

Sending good race vibes out to Beth, Steve, and anyone else racing this weekend!

Oh, Shawn, I'm sorry you're having such a tough time. Man, that hamstring injury has been really persistent. It sucks so much to be injured, especially in the middle of race season. I hope you're able to do at least some of your races, but please remember to take it easy and take good care of yourself! I wish I had better advice for you. Hang in there -- you will get better, it just sucks to be patient.

And don't disappear on us again!

I'm back at the hotel. Let's just say it was an "interesting" 5k. Nearly a mile of it was done on the dirt horse racing track at Del Mar. I knew in advance that we were starting and finishing at the track, but I didn't know they meant ON the track. It seemed to slow everyone waaaaay down due to all the ruts and such in the dirt. Apparently this is the first year they've done the race at this venue and no seemed to be very happy about it. I'm so covered in dirt that I feel more like a did a trail run than a road race. LOL

By my Garmin, the course was actually a little bit long (3.2 miles) and I finished it in 56:11. Given I've been battling the hurting toe all week, had to contend with the dirt track, and it was REALLY HOT out there, I'm generally happy with my performance. Would I have liked to have finished faster? Sure, but this race had a lot of variables that just kept that from happening.

In addition to the 3.2 miles I completed during the race, we also had a pretty good walk in from the parking area. After the race was over, I reset my Garmin and measured the distance from the race area back to the parking lot. It was .6 of a mile, so by the time I made the round trip, that's another 1.2 miles of walking I've done today which makes a combined total of about 4.4 miles. I think I'll take the afternoon off from exercising.

I don't have another race planned for about a month. That should give me some time for my toe to heal and work a bit more on increasing my running time. Since it takes place on July 26, heat may be an issue at that race as well, but I'll worry about that closer to race day. LOL

Ok, time for me to go wash the race track off.

    Hi All....

I hope everyone had a good weekend of training and relaxing.

I have a quick newbie question for you.  I have seen that a lot of people warm up in the water before the swim to relax.  My coach also recommended it, especially for me.  Do you then take off your wetsuit until the race starts?  don't you get hot waiting for the start of the race if you don't?

    Thanks

    Suzy

I can't recommend getting in the water to warm up enough. I always freak out a little when I first get in open water, and much better to get the freak-out done before the race than during. Plus, once I get used to the water I find it very calming.

Anyway, your question -- my opinion would be no, don't take off the wetsuit. In all of my races, we had two chances to get in the water: before the *first* wave start, when everyone was free to jump in the water and feel it out, and then again before *my* wave start, since there are usually about 10 minutes between waves. I'd suggest you take advantage of both (I usually do), just because the more warming up, the better. If you take advantage of the first warmup time then yes, you might end up standing around in your wetsuit for a while, and I suppose it could get hot, but it'd be such a pain to take it off and put it back on again and it would add up to a lot of extra stress, in my opinion. If it's super hot, you could always just strip off the top half of the wetsuit.

But if you have, like, an hour before your wave starts and it's really hot, I suppose you could take it off. I have no clue how hard it is to get a wet wetsuit back on!

A really small town outside of Appleton Wisconsin.  The start is 8:15am, but I do know the kids go off first and have no idea how long that will take.  I picked this race because of the swim distance and because I will know no one.  I did not want the pressure of a bunch of my cronies the first time out.

It's so funny you'd pick a race in the middle of nowhere ... it's kind of weird, but I totally get not having cronies around! (Then again, it's really nice to have someone to carry all that stuff, ha ha).

Wetsuits are actually easier to manipulate when wet ... if it gets hot, you can just peel off the top half and stand around like that. Erin's definitely right, try to get in the water before the race.

Wonderful RRs from Bunny and dear Beth, who went through so much to get to this tri-du-tri!

I am on a plane to Indonesia tonight. I'll be checking in sporadically (oh, so no change, Yanti, duh) for the next three weeks, but I am racing this weekend in my home country! Yay!
