And during these grueling winter months when I spend most of my T.I.T.S. on the drainer...any recommendations for good workouts? I'm serious about working on my cycling skillz, since that's my weakest sport (next to swimming...ha).

JorgeM has a great winter cycling program for building power.

It starts here;

Oh yeah. Did that last year. Brutal. So, besides from biking lots and working on your LT and cadence, there's no specific workout you can do on a trainer that will make you better at climbing hills?

I can wait until spring to start working on that though...hehe.

IMO it's limited.  Also depends on your climbing style.  If you stand and climb its possible to block the front wheel up to simulate this.  I don’t bother because my climbing style is a bit aggressive and I use a lot of upper body.  Long intervals are another useful and productive training method on a trainer.

PennState - 2010-01-05 7:56 PM Key for a good bike split (I went 5:27 last year)???

Time in the saddle. (T.I.T.S.)

Thanks for telling me what T.I.T.S. stood for b/c I saw that on an earlier post and had no idea what that meant. I just chuckled b/c how it reads.

What is a good amount of time to put in the saddle during base period? How many hours per week?

Just checked out the workouts and they look rough! Would you recommend doing one of these workouts once a week and incorporate them with easier Z1 & 2 workouts and form workouts?

You could do that but IMO I would do a least 90 RPM's.  Plans are always modified.  Did you check out JorgeM's plans a couple of post up?  ^^^

I'm going to second Jorge's plan.  My limiter is the bike so I decided to do Jorge's Winter Bike Plan.  I'm on Week 8 and I can feel a HUGE difference.  The raw soreness and fatigue I feel in my thighs is nothing I can compare to in 2 years (so far) of outside riding.  Doing Jorge's plan, my quads are more sore at times than the days following a 56-mile HIM race.  His plan is three rides per week, with an optional Z1/ Z2 long ride on the weekend.  3 hard rides per week would likley build leg power more quickly than only one interval session per week.  Remember, no pain no gain.  Or you could try Jenn with two N's bike plan which includes sipping champagne and nibbling on exotic cheeses while you sit on the trainer and playfully pedal.

No, I wouldn't recommend that.  I would follow the program from week 1.  The point of the hard workouts on the trainer is that you're not spending as much time in the saddle, so you gotta go big while you're there.  You can add a 4th easier z1/z2 ride where you ride long if you want to, but i wouldn't replace that with the others.  Just my opinion.

x1000.

I don't know the program well, but this is great advice for any plan.  Follow it to the T, because as soon as you start switching things around, you are messing with the purpose of each workout.....this is rule number 2 with training, which of course is behind rule #1....consistancy.

I will answer for you... YOU BETTER WORK!!*

Other than good luck finding a place to stay... No just kidding, you might be able to get put on a waiting list at the local hotels in LP. There are always spaces opening up as people get injured and drop out during training. My friend just told me there were available spaces at the Best Western in Saranac Lake, and the best part they don't have a minimum night stay policy.

Good luck!

Well for a rock you swim fast!

Don't forget LP has a exit the water at completion of the first lap.  I don’t know how much time this slow or speed the swim time.  I swam a 1:02 and that was under 10% of the field.

Art Devlin's Olympic Motor Inn.  2 blocks from transition.  5 night minimum, $200/night.  I'd get on the waiting list asap if you're willing to pay that.

I haven't said too much here yet.  Sounds like lots of young'uns smack talking.  So . . . who else is doing IMLP that's old (45+)? Slow (just want to finish under the cutoff)?  Still kinda pudgy?

I'm 50 years old and just short of being an Athena.  Any more of us going?

My race day age will be 48 at LP 2010.

Hope to see you there.  I am sure we will get a group met-up at the Gatorade swim.  Wed-Fri maybe even Sat I guess.
