Hi guys,

I am back and believe it or not, hitting the pool today for a little recovery.  Was working on my rr this morning as I find I am on East coast time today!

http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=249132

Kyla-I am still sore today!  Guess I really laid it all out there this time!

It's long, folks, sorry for the novel.

It's Wednesday! Who's making history this weekend by toeing the line?  The scoop is required!

For the rest of us, what's the most important thing you do to stay healthy? why do you think it works?

No racing here...just racing around visiting folks. Headed to Long Island Thus night to see my brother who is in from Hawaii.  Back home Sat then Sunday to my in-laws in Scranton for Easter dinner.

Staying healthy...don't have a strategy.  I don't do well in the sleep dept...typically 6-7 per night.  3 kids at 3 different schools means we have about a million germs in the house.  I think next winters strategy will be to lock the kids in the house and home school them!!

For injuries I focus mostly on my running.  My shins/heels don't like it when I run back to back days so I try to limit that.  Sometimes give myself two days after a long run if they are feeling sore.  I expect that to be my key challenge when start ramping up the mileage for an early Oct marathon.

bfwhitt - 2011-04-20 7:08 AMOperation Rip Van Winkle has begun:
Day 1:
Went to bed at 9:30 Alarm set for 5:00 am - get up at 4:20 WTF !Sleep was ok, wife was coughing intermitently throughout the night and my son woke me up around 12:30 laughing very loud at some show he was watching, wanted to go downstairs and throw the TV out the door. Anybody have an extra house/bedroom that is quiet that I can sleep in.

Some observations about the early morning:

1) It is dark out
2) It is very quiet
3) There are other people actually up doing things - are you kidding me
4) The dogs want to eat no matter what time it is
5) Coffee is especially gooooood
6) My body is saying ---WTF are you doing to me.
7) My brain is saying ....I love getting up early....over and over.....not sure it has convinced the body...

OK the training is done....

Can I go back to sleep now?

Awesome!  Do that for a week straight and it will be habit (or so I have heard...I do most of my workouts at lunch or night time).  Agree with Kyla - going to bed on is the hard part for me (in bed at midnight last night!).  If you can get that as part of your routine, that 5 am alarm won't seem so bad.

Hey Bruce, congrats on dragging yourself out of bed and getting it done.

I typically get my son off to school and then workout from around 730 or 8 till it gets done.  This morning I rode with my group at 530 and I must say that it is nice getting it done and out of the way.  Our early ride has been sidelined for the last couple of weeks after my wreck ... Smalley, who took the fall was the "leader" and organizer of our rides in the morning.  His fractured pelvis is healing though...good news.

This morning I rode my road bike.  Dang that thing is smooth.  My question is, do you guys feel like the tri bike is alot harsher ride than the roadie?

Seriously my roadie feels like a limo compared to the tri.  My tri bike has 21mm tires as opposed to 23.  Feels like any bump is likely to cause a loss of control, whereas the road bike handles so much better.  Is that typical?

A big part of the difference is probably the wheel base.  Road bikes typically have a larger wheel base making for a "softer" ride. The trade off is that a tri bike is much more responsive. A carbon bike frame is also stiffer than the typical road frame and therefore transfers more of the vibraations to the rider.

Having two little germ factories in the house makes for a lot of colds Oct - Sep .  I probably catch every 3rd one that comes into the house, which sucks because I have asthma and they always end up as a chest cold and then it's minimal workouts for ~7-10 days.  When the kids have signs of a cold I'll up the vitamin, fruits and water intake.  One thing I'm convinced helps is to mix up a little saline solution and do a nasal swab a couple times a day (recommended by a Dr friend).  The nasal cavity is a breeding ground and the saline knocks em dead.  This study of n=1 shows that you'll develop less colds when you start this early.

For injury prevention, I've found that I've stayed injury free by keeping the volume low the last couple of years

Mmmmm...I thought carbon was supposed to have  a "softer" feel than say an aluminum frame?  Or are you saying that a carbon tri frame is stiffer than a carbon road frame?

It is for me, but you know the RU has been a disaster....going to give it another whirl this year and hopefully stay upright.

Well, my tri bike is smooth on the trainer too.

It's Wednesday! Who's making history this weekend by toeing the line?  The scoop is required!

For the rest of us, what's the most important thing you do to stay healthy? why do you think it works?

It's Easter weekend, which means I am going to visit my parents, which means I am toeing the line in an entirely different way: the race against all the food readily available!  Junk food galore!  Must...resist...

Most important thing to stay healthy?  Vitamins, I suppose, in terms of sicknesses.  I'm a carrier for tonsilitis though, so generally if it's coming, there's nothing I'm going to do to stop it!  For injuries...that's hard for me.  I don't like "taking it easy" on a workout.  I'm trying to get better, but playing college soccer taught me to play through pain.  Apparently, I'm too old to do that anymore!

Ok So I ned some wetsuit advice. I am looking to purchase my 1st wetsuit and I need some help. I already know that I want fullsleeve and Xterra(great discount from my tri club). Now here is my situation. I am looking at the following

Vortex 3 Fullsuit and the Vector Pro X2

The Vector Pro X2 after discounts would cost $125 more than the Vortex 3, but the Vortex 3 wont arrive in time for my 1st race so I would have to rent a suit which would cost $60 so the net cost increase for the Vector X2 that would arrive on time is +$65. My main question is is it worth it? I never swam in a wetsuit and dont know much about it. From some research it seams that the Vector is more buoyant and has better arm flexibility.

Also interms of sizing I am 6'1 190-193lbs so according to there size chart i am on the border between MLA and L, What size should I go with. Something of note the only one that would get to me in time for my 1st race is the Vector X2 size MLA and thats the way I am currently leaning.

Thanks

The Vortex is basically their entry level suit so I would expect the Vector to be more flexible but not sure about the buoyancy difference.

The biggest key for wetsuits is fit.  If it fits poorly, it doesn't matter if it is high end or entry level.  Unfortunately, being in a time crunch doesn't help you.  Xterra does have a policy that you can try it on and swim in a pool and exchange for size if it doesn't fit (I think they still have that policy) but that still doesn't help your time crunch.  Although it might cost a little more, you might be best renting one and being able to try it out for fit and then purchase the one that is best.  It wil be very costly to get the one that gets there on time, fits crappy, and then you have to buy another.

One other thing about Xterra...their discounts don't seem to me to be as good as they look.  They are pretty much always "on sale" and the club discount is often the same as what you can get when you go to their webpage - not sure if that is the case with your club.  I am not knocking them, the only wetsuit I own is a Vortex 2 sleeveless and it has been good to me, I just think that they advertise deep discounts when in reality their suits might be over priced at the full price they advertise on their site.

thanks gdale I def agree with you on there "discounts" and thanks for the advice, I think I am going to call them and give them my measurements and see what size they suggest and go from there. I am looking at the vector as my 1st choice do to the arm flexibility as swimming is not my strong suit and i will take any help possible

No racing for me  ....  Good luck to all the racers this weekend.

Staying healthy for me really involves listening to your body.  Learning to walk that line between pushing your body for adaptation and not getting injured is an important skill.  It can be a tightrope at times.  So, just because the work-out calls for an all out interval run doesn't mean that is what your bod can handle at that moment, you might be tired from life, work, kids, previous work-outs, etc. and need to listen to your body and modify (notice ... modify ... not skip) your work-outs accordingly.  Recovery is just as important as a hard work out.  "Training Stress Scores" from some of the new training software has tried to quantify some of this data, but it still is really individual.

However, if you start being lazy regularly because you have found a new excuse, then you need to HTFU (sorry Suzy and Birdy) and get your work in.   Laughing

LMAO @ Doggie-paddle!! I use a squid like back stroke movement.Yea fit is def a big concern, I dont know what would be defined as too tight. Are there any signs in fit I should look for? Are wetsuits supposed to fit like compression clothing? I am assuming it should be tight but my chest should be able to expand easily for breathing with out major constriction
