Had a great 30 mile ride on Saturday.  Would have been longer but I was running out of daylight and I don't do night riding.  Got a 6.5 mile run last night.  Have been hitting under my caloric intake goals the past couple of days thanks to workouts.

P90X starts tonight, right after my "before" picture...hahaha.

Gonna need to focus this week to avoid gorging, or maybe just work out a lot more.

Good luck to you all.

Well, the tough week begins. My first challenge of the week: trying to adjust my workouts around travelling out of town for the holidays. Found a gym to swim at, checked the weather for the week and have routes planned out.

Next challenge: consumption.

Good luck everyone!

Planning is the very best first step. Have a great week!

I haven't really posted in a while. Been ramping up into a new training schedule 22 weeks, leading up to HIM New Orleans... so its been hard to monitor what I need to take in and what I don't.

I need to work on my nightly cravings. Every day I'm doing 100% fine up until the hour before I go to bed. Thats where milk and bread or milk and cookies or something along those lines seems to be really really tempting.

On the other hand I'm going to start biking to school as often as possible. If I can, I'll double it up and make the trek to and from school a workout. Otherwise it'll be a 14mile commute just spinning (one way). I feel that doing this will dramatically increase my caloric expenditure and it'll help me burn a lot of fat off, especially if I keep the whole thing zone 1.

Also I got sick and have been throwing up everything that I swallow. I stopped working out for a few days and I don't know if my body is just bloating or what but I'm up 4 pounds. I have a half-marathon race coming up and I would like to get down to 170. 10 lbs in 4-5 weeks... I'm sure I can do it, even with thanksgiving coming up.

I've a week off for Thanksgiving. We might go somewhere for the weekend but otherwise just chill in, shopping.. I took my bike in today coz the chain is acting wierd.

I feel like taking a rest day today and going at it hard tomorrow.

My own challenge for the week: swim/bike/run and eat at least one vegetable dish every day.  :=)

Funny story.

The daughter and I went for a 2.7 mile run Saturday. I wanted to change our route for Sunday. I told the wife the route I wanted to do. She said it was 1.3 miles to the halfway point. Jocelyn and I set off on our run, expecting to do 2.6 miles. Now, I have zero ability to sense how far I've run when running at my daughter's 13:45/mile pace. When we returned home, Jocelyn was complaining about how tired she was. I checked Strava for our time and distance... 4MILES in 56:17!!! That's not too bad for her just getting into running, but she informed me that she was NOT ready for 4 miles.

I blamed Mom. :-)

Seems like maybe I am not the only one who hit a little funk. This past week has been extremely rough for work and as a result missed workouts, crappy eating and the scale going the other way is the result (shocking)

Did get in a nice long run yesterday and hopefully sweat off some crap on the trainer tonight. The tough weeks are starting peeps, here come the holidays Frown

I'm in!  Gonna start following the thread for the challenges.

I'm at 126 lbs, want to be 107.5 (yep, healthy for height, 5'4"), and I have 19 weeks until my HIM starting this week (second HIM), which works out perfectly at a pound a week.  Hit my food goal for Monday.

Nutrition:  1600 calorie average per day.

Strength:  3 X group strength train with tri coach (3-5 people at a time, sometimes I get her all to myself ha).  During tri season we go down to two and make it more functional, but I told her to forget functional for the winter, I want guns!  I was soooo psyched that I've started using 12's today for a few exercises, I started May 7th using 5's and 8's.  Now I only use 5's and 8's for shoulders (I have a shoulder tear that's not getting operated on for now, before strength I used to not be able to use that arm to open doors, hold grocery bags, carry my purse, now I do all that and of course it hurts now and then but 99% of the time I don't even notice, strength training has vastly improved my quality of life).  It used to hurt to just move the arm, now I'm using 10's for shoulder presses.  Balance and core greatly improved.

I do about 15-20 hours a week of SBR and strength.  Usually one bike group trainer ride, one long ride, one short run, one long run, one track session, 3 swim sessions, and 3 strength sessions.

Whenever the time changes I have such a hard time physically, I started working out 7/3/09 and it hits me every time the time changes, fourth year now, where every day feels like day 1.  I even skipped a workout for the first time this year, just couldn't bring myself to do the bike.  That was two weeks ago.  Last week I got it all done even if I finished a run a few minutes before midnight ha.  This week I've finally rebounded back (it lasts 2-3 weeks every year).  I split my workouts into morning and night so that I can go harder with each one and the night ones are hard, I don't feel like working out, I almost skipped today's run but I just have to make myself start it and then I enjoy it.  And it really works better to separate them.  But the shorter days make me lazy ha.

Oh yeah, I'm 34   I should be 124 lbs for my HM on Sunday of next week, 120 lbs by New Year's, 115 lbs by my 5K that I want to PR on 2/3, and 107.5 lbs by the HIM on 4/20.

I really have no clue what I weighed at the beginning of this.....I know last week I didn't like what I saw but it was not a true weight (non fasting and bloated post race wheat belly)......today 149.9.  I think that's still up from the beginning but since I didn't weigh in then I can't tell.  Only way to go from here is DOWN.

Per day?  You bet I'm in.  I shoot for 2/meal (although breakfast is usually fruits), and I eat them first.  Its all about my "pickle jar" nutrition theory.

Hey everyone!  Spent the weekend in the USA and ran the Philly half - a great experience - great city!  But failed my own personal challenge of losing 3 pounds by race date and so no shopping  Everything was a bit too tight or way too big.  Sucks.  But now my focus until the new year is strength strength strength and diet.  I NEED to get stronger!

This week is crazy busy with the family so I'll fumble through and try to make wise food choices but this weekend I hope to have the fridge stocked full of chopped and prepped veggies and every meal will be planned with no cheating.  I even threw out the remaining Hallowe'en candy (much to my child's dismay).  NO EXCUSES!!!

I do the same fruit in am, veggies at each meal and snack. but.... what is the "pickle jar" theory of yours?

As requested....I have gotten away from this theory lately and it cost me in the form of about 10 lbs.  I'm back on it now though hoping to see the same results as before.

In case you haven't heard of the pickle jar analogy it goes like this.

A professor walks into his class and holds up an empty pickle jar and tells his students that the jar represents their life.

He takes out several large rocks and places them into the jar until they reach the top and asks the students if the jar is full.  To which his students responded yes.  At this point he pulls out a bag of gravel and pours it into the jar and the gravel runs down and fills the voids between the rocks.  After several minutes of shaking and rattling the jar to fill the voids he again asks if the jar is full.  His students have learned and answer no.  At this he pulls a bag of sand and pours it into the jar filling the voids between the gravel.  Again after some time the sand is all the way to the top and the students are pretty sure nothing else can fit and answer that the jar is finally full.  The professor finally pulls out two pitchers of water and pours the water into the jar finally filling it all the way to the brim.

Now in the original version of the analogy the professor says that the big rocks should represent the most important things in life.  Health, faith, and family.  The gravel should represent things that are important but not life altering like jobs, friends, etc.  The sand represents their hobbies and things they enjoy.  And the water represents every thing else.  Which means that unless you put first things first (big rocks) then there won't be any room for them.

During my run this morning I was pondering...I often do that on runs, the application of this analogy to a diet.  Now when I say diet I am not referring to a program you follow for a while to lose a desired amount of weight and then discontinue its use.  I am referring to the way we approach eating and fueling our bodies.

In my opinion the rocks are plant based.  Your fruits, and vegetables.  These low calorie nutrient dense foods should go in first.  The gravel would represent your proteins.  Also important but should only be consumed after your vegetables.  The sand represent your carbohydrates which are important but high in calories and often over consumed by the public in general.  And the water represents everything else like sugars and deserts etc.

I subscribe to a very simple caloric deficit plan.  And eating this way in combination with training for triathlons I have lost a good deal of weight.  I always have fruits and/or vegetables with every meal.  I always consume them first typically raw or grilled with not much else added (like butter).  Like I said the calorie/nutrient ratio if very low.  They are also very filling and will help reduce my intake of the other items.  Then I consume my protiens, usually lean but I do have a steak now and again...followed by carbs, and if at the end of the day I still have some wiggle room in my calories I'll have a desert.
