I heard my cage rattling, although that could be my brain after a day with 8th graders!!!  Give it up......Who's racing this weekend?  What's the plan?

Let's also talk about training plans.  Which plans are you using?  Where did you find them?  If you're training for something specific in addition to triathlon races (think bike race, ultra Laughing, etc), how do you modify or combine plans?

No racing this wekend for me. IN terms of training plans I am on a 33 week Fink Competitive Plan. I added three weeks for some races I might do and if I don't do them I will use those weeks in other ways (injuries [hope not], family interruptions, or unplanned races). I am on week 8 right now towards the Vineman Full in Guerneville, CA in late July. Things are going well so far.

No racing for me.

I will probably use Joel Friel again this year with focus on my "A" race in August. I have been focusing on strength training through January and will start cutting back on strength little by little and move more into endurance over the next two months. First real race is Rutgers 1/2 mary end of March so plan on stepping up the running in February.

No races for me. Good luck to all who are racing. I have no plan as of yet. I am building bases in everything. I am currently doing P90X. after i finish I will decide a plan. I currently do 2 runs and 2 swims per week and try and get 2-4 bike rides if possible.

How about our own Tony ripping it up at the Masters World Championships!!!  I understand it was very muddy and quite the "tractor pull" as we call it CX!  Tony is on the right in the black/white kit and a red cycling cap under his helmet.

Thanks for all the kind words, everybody! No racing for me this weekend. I'll be working my daughter's swim meet and squeezing in some running if I can. Good luck to our racers!

For training, I'm loosely following a marathon training plan and trusting my masters coach to make me a better swimmer. No biking for now. When I start training for a triathlon, I'll follow one of the BT training plans for the bike.

No racing for me.

I have a bit of a hybrid plan going on. I'm using my coaches old marathon plan for me, with a little Hal Higdon mixed in.

I really should swim again though!

No racing here, I was doing the Fink competitive plan but after my Europe trip at Christmas I felt like I'd screwed it all up. I searched around and found Gale Bernhardt's 13 week IM plan which I officially start next week!!! I've been doing hard indoor trainer rides using Trainer Road and I'm feeling strong again and back in the groove

Hey,

Since January is over I was wondering if I could get some inputs on my totals for the month. I plan on being more active on the weekends. Am I on the right track? This is my first full month of training. This week was my recovery week that is why the numbers are low this week.

Thanks in advance

Tony,  I hear you had a tough day, but those pictures will impress people forever!  Wow!  You are a beast

Suzy, glad you had a great time.  It looked marvelous.

I'm going to try to get a long trail run in tomorrow, but I'm feeling a little tentative because of the weather.  It's going to be very cold (think 15 degrees with a wind chill around 0), and I'm looking at being out there for around 4 hours.  My running partner is from South Africa, so it will seem even worse for her.

Think warm thoughts

Will you be running loops? If so, I'd stash some thermoses of hot fluids - broth, cider, even just hot water - to warm up with on each loop. My guess is your face and hands and feet will feel it the most, so I'd bring some hand warmers and an extra scarf or neck gaiter to change halfway. Also, it looks a little silly but my husband wears ski goggles to keep his eyes warm when he rides his bike in cold weather.

Good luck! I'll be running 12-ish at 5 am, so I'll feel 3/5 of your pain!

Are you following a training plan? If so, you should trust the plan. It looks like you have a good balance across disciplines. If you're time limited, you could reallocate some of the time you're spending on strength training to s/b/r. Keep up the good work!

Sorry, I'd forgotten that. Usually the training plans will include some information about what kind of training base is assumed. You might look at a few to get an idea of what volumes you need to build to before starting a plan. I think this is especially important for the run, as you don't want to suddenly double or triple your run volume.

Question, what are the legs in the duathlon you are doing in April?

I think overall, you did well in January, but my concern would be your investment in strength at the expense of bike and run volume.

3 miles for both runs and 13.5 for bike. I know that my run and bike volumes need to increase, I could of had better numbers if I would of got out on the weekends. I am planning on continuing to increase runs by 10%. I am also going to input a few more rides including a long 40+ miles every other weekend.  I know the bulk of the HIM is bike and run and need lots of volume on those two events. I figure by the time I get done with P90X then there will be more daylight. I have found that it is hard for me to spin now that I have rode on the road. I try and force myself to go to the classes but its hard. I do all of my strength in the am when its dark.

Ok...... I'm sitting here reading all the posts of how many miles how hard they are training and all the sudden feel little and insugnificant.  I really thought I was training hard and was doing good. Now I feel as if my small amount of time and distance is not enough to get me to where I want to be.

I am right now training 4-5 days a week. I have a swimming coach to push me on my swimming.  I have put in what I concider good solid endurance workouts.  I am trying to get to a point where I can start training hard for the chelan man sprint. I have looked up many training plans and read lots of material, but still don't feel confident enough in one yet to pick.

I still have work, family and school to balance and the hour and half extra for training is really puting my family in a position where they are having be independant of me.  I fell like I'm starting to slack as a mom.  I fear that they won't be able to keep it up for another 6 months expecially when the training picks up.

As difficult as this may sound, you cannot compare yourself to other people - especially some of the beasts in this MG.  There are some amazing athletes in this group and they are here to help you with your journey while they share theirs with you.  If you must make comparisons, compare yourself to the person you were last week, last month, last year.  The gains you are making are neither little nor insignificant.

I went through a similar funk last year when I felt like I had hit a plateau and really wasn't accomplishing much.  My training slacked for a couple of weeks.  Then I tried to go out and do workouts that a month earlier were routine, only to find that they had become extremely difficult.  I have a quote on my training log to remind me of that.  "It never gets easier.  You just get better."  I can't swim like Kyla, I can't bike like Dino, and I can't run like Julia; but I can do all three better than I could last week, last month, or last year.
