I know, I know, I know! I simply CANNOT concentrate. It was dumb to ride it at lunch instead of waiting until after work. I just called and they have time to fit me tonight too! Although the upgraded crank will have to be ordered, so I do have to wait on that.

And since I totally hate my current shoes w/ SPD cleats I'll take this opportunity to replace them (my shoes have a ratchet buckle on them that gets jammed up all the time -- totally annoying in transition). I'm thinking of trying out a Speedplay system, but have heard mixed reviews on them. What do you guys & gals use? Should I stick with SPD? Try out Look?

Also, any suggestions on race wheels? I'm NOT buying them right now, but would like to maybe get a set sometime this summer. My coach gets a dealer discount (like 60% off retail), so I want to take advantage of that. I have bare minimum knowledge about wheels.

Hey, if I can't be fast, I might as well look fancy! :-)

Race Prep Question

When I'm out riding by myself I carry a saddle bag with two tubes, two CO2 canisters and CO2 head, tire levers, and multitool. I plan on going lighter for the race, carrying only enough for one tube fix. The question is, should I go without the multitool?

i would say yea dont carry it . but if you have room and want to its not like it is aa couple pounds and plus your already getting rid of one set of spare parts . its tough for me cause everything i carrry goes in a spare water bottle . and it weighs more filled with water then what i got in it . so i dont think you will notice the few xtra ounces if you feel better with it . but if its a mental weight thing ditch it .

Stick with one tube and one canister unless you you have 650 wheels.  Multitool?  Take it or leave it.  Your choice.

Can't wait to hear how you do!

I did my last run before the tri; no more workouts before Sunday. So, what do I do tomorrow and Saturday? Stretching? Absolutely nothing? Worrying about having everything I need, transition setup, etc is a given ! Tomorrow I travel down to Richmond, so I have to have everything organized and packed tonight/tomorrow morning. Where's that check list of mine?!?

BTW On Monday and today I really cut back the intensity of my runs and it felt really terrible, like I couldn't have brought the speed back up even if I had wanted. Is that normal? I assume I'll remember how to run fast on Sunday? Sheesh, you'd think this was my first tri!

Hey Nicole.  First, you're going to do FANTASTIC!  I'm by no means even close to an expert on the subject, but my (unofficial) coach has us do some short speed work at the track 2 days before the race.  Maybe a short swim too.  The day before the race just some walking and whatever to get the nerves out.  Stretching would be good.
As far as feeling slow on your runs right now, I think that's totally normal.  The same thing happens to me.  And one of my friends said that before her most recent half marathon she struggled to run 2 miles a couple of days before the event and was freaking out.  On race day, she PR'd.  You're going to do GREAT!  Oh, and have fun!!!!!

I just received my pre-race info. The water temp is about 59F and they are recommending neoprene hoodies! I don't have one but had been planning on doubling up on the swim caps. Should I try to find one between now and Sunday?

My wave goes off last, 21 minutes after the race start; 35+ female and the relay teams. I guess the upside of this is less time waiting between the end of the race and the awards.

sdbryant - 2008-04-15 9:00 AM Thanks guys. You helped a lot with what % of each I should be getting. Thank goodness, because the ratios I was thinking is hard to attain. What foods do you like to help you get more protein and less fat. I simply cannot swallow anymore boneless skinless chicken! I'm getting bored with my meals and need some new ideas!

I also eat alot of fish. My favorite sandwich is bay shrimp stuffed in a whole wheat pita with spinach, sprouts, tomato. When I'm on the run I like the clif builder bars. They have 20 grams of protein and the ingredients are natural which is important to me. They're a little high in calories 270, but alot of times I use them as a meal replacement.

them slow days always come before a race i dont know why cause it makes me want to get out the next day and try it again . but no really trust in your training you have done such a good job and worked hard at it . you are going to do great !!

about them water temps. i know nothing about them that cold but if you are thinking about one of them caps maybe they will have some at the expo you can take a look at and try on and see then . but you know what they say dont try new things on race day . (although i have broke that rule a few times ) just see what ya think of it .

today was a travel day (we're staying with my MIL about an hour south of the race venue). On the way down we stopped into Bonzai Sports so that I could buy a neoprene hoodie and booties. I know we say "nothing new on race day", but I'm nervous about the cold water. Also picked up some Seal Cement; just spent 1/2 hour repairing a few nail tears in my wetsuit. Now I'm good to go!

On the way down we also detoured off the highway so that we could drive the bike route. I'm thrilled to see that it's far flatter than anything I've been practicing on. Should be fast!

I'm gonna have 40 minutes to kill between when they close the transition area and when my wave goes off. When do I want to get my wetsuit on? It's gonna be a bother having to walk around carrying my suit, hoodie, booties, goggles, and cap.

The weather prediction for tomorrow is temps in the low 60's with 80% chance of rain and thunderstorms!

I know they don't cancel for rain, but do they cancel for thunderstorms?

The weather is beautiful, if a tad warm, for the half IM that's going on today.

I'm going to think lots of happy thoughts that they DON'T cancel the event.  I think the only reason they would if they thought people's safety was in jeopardy.  Have fun and good luck!  You're going to do great!
