Subject: RE: SWBKRUN Mentor Group-Closed! TIME TO TRAIN!

April really wasn't spectacular for me on the volume front for training.  But the Half Mary and Du tell me that I've been doing something right.  I really need to get in the water a lot more (Tony - 9 hours?  Wow).  My wife went off maternity leave, so my time allotment for training will probably drop this coming month, we'll see.  But I hope that since summer is here I can start getting my running miles up.  Last year I had 400 miles running, this year I want to break 600, which puts me at an avg of 50 per month.  So I'm behind there right now.  I still hope to learn to kick butt on the bike.  I've got to overcome the hills.  So this month I'll be doing a lot more strength training with leg focus.  I need to get into the Yoga thing more, I feel so much better and faster when I do it regularly.

So May goals... (I'll shoot myself for posting this)
300 miles on the bike
50+ miles running
5 hours in the pool
Strength train and sculpt that Men's Health cover model body... ha ha.

Check my training log today for a special poster that I made...  NSFW (no pRon, just language).

Holy crap Steve...life with without kids...27hrs on the bike. Nice work! April felt like a pretty slow month. Away for a bit of it, and our weather has been so frustrating! I swore I didnt want to run in the snow anymore, and hating the stationary. Looks like things are finally getting cleared up outside. But, I've got 2 more sprints this month to focus on, then June is the OWS Tri...For me I need to focus on training and nutrition more this month. Get all the negatives out of my head, and really focus on hitting it in May! Only one off day per week!

April's totals:
Bike:5h 11m 08s  - 148.79 KM
Run:6h 19m 46s  - 60.31 KM
Swim:4h 06m 30s  - 10400 M
Strength:30m
Elliptical Training:15m

Linda - So glad to hear about your husband. Enjoy each other and the time you spend together!!!

Steve - Nice race addition.

Tracy - I have always found that gifts for my husband that I will also use are great. He did get me race wheels (Zipps) for Christmas. I was shocked and I love them.

Suzy - Kinda late, but I love the new avatar - you look like you are having fun!

My April totals:

Bike:5h 59m 43s - 79.22 Mi
Run:4h 54m 34s - 23.35 Mi
Swim:2h 32m - 4800 Yd

Not great, but I'm not too disappointed for missing the first week and being sick!
My goals for May (I'll post them so everyone knows!!!):

Bike: 125 Mi
Run: 30 Mi
Swim: 10,000 Yd

Oh, and a question. I got a free pair of Newtons last month but haven't ran in them yet. Any body have a pair? Are they very different? Just curious if anybody has an opinion before I try them out.

Yes Trevor... Life without kids.... I know I need work on my bike so why not put the miles in?!?

Karen- Zipps, and Newtons?  Tony is going to be jealous!!  Newtons are ok if you have a problem with your running gaite... If you are a neutral runner the shoe is not for you.

Tracy- WTF?  What is the scoop?  You going to tow-the-line this Saturday?!

Hey, guys, I can't keep up with names.  So I made a cross-reference with Screen Names/Real Names/ and locations.  If you want it
http://www.gfconsultants.com/client_uploads/SwbkrunGroup.xls
(can't get the link to work)

April's totals:
Bike:2h 29m 59s  - 33.94 Mi
Run:6h 47m 26s  - 40.53 Mi

After this Saturday this should get cranked up a bit.  This last two weeks really crank the miles down before the race.  Start swimming sometime next week.

BTW, I'm out until Monday.  Field Trip to the Indianapolis Children's Musuem tomorrow with the 2nd graders.

Mini-Marathon Saturday!!!

Beer Saturday night!!!!!!!

Everyone racing, good luck.

Does anyone else think this whole new shoe movement is suspect?  You have a lot of comapnies that are NOT shoe companies coming out with models that you either "have to break in for 6 weeks" or endure arch blisters to use them.  Seriously, do we really need tri specific shoes? or do tri companies want to get in the shoe business which is the highest margin item and most often replaced item for an athlete.

April is always a weird volume month due to Boston.  In May, I will finish up my last week of reverse tapering and then hope to get a whole lot more biking in and a whole lot more progress on the swim front (OWS class starts on May11!).   Much will depend on what my new coach has in store for me.  I love when someone else is responsible for telling me what to do!

April's totals:
Bike:9h 36m 45s  - 172.3 Mi
Run:20h 15m 44s  - 143.02 Mi
Swim:11h 36m  - 17950 Yd
Core Training:3h 10m
Walking:30m

Bike:18h 34m  - 288.9 Mi
Run:12h 08m  - 80.38 Mi

X3...After all the average Triathlete is a 20-30ish year old man with a bunch of disposable income. So if he thinks it can be him that much fast/look that much cooler, he'll do it. Look at golf, its the same thing.....how many different types of drivers do you need on the market?

And I just ordered the Garmin 310XT from trisports.com...preorder they expect their shipment late next week.

SHOULD I GO WITH A PLAN OR "WING IT"?

I have been looking at HIM plans and trying to figure out what my game plan is going to be in that start time would be right around the corner.  Here are my thoughts.  I am swimming with my masters group  3 times a week and the workouts are around 3000yds.  I have group rides 3 to 4 days a week that usually go around 30 miles, and I can throw a long one in each week.  Running...I am on my own and really need to step that up.

Do you experienced people think that if I mix in the run volume of the beginner plan, that I will be in good shape come September?  Is there some serious science to these plans? I know that there are periods for rest and the taper, and I can adjust the volume for that.  What do you guys think?

Havin'Fun - 2009-04-29 1:38 PM Hi gang, this is not tri related...but I have to share.  Today we found out that my husband does NOT have cancer.  We have been living under that cloud for the last 5 days.  It was a 90% chance of cancer.  Turns out he has a very rare condition that is not even enough to treat.    Good news, he can live to be a very old man with this "issue".  This and the fact my 6 yr old has been very, very sick for the last week (starting to make a little progress) has been tough.

I have done most of my workouts, I have a HIM scheduled for May 9th, but not all workouts have had the focus they deserve.  Tonight I will ride for 2 hrs and either veg or kick a$$.  Not sure which (I am relieved, but I think I am beginning to feel the stress of everything since now I no longer need to be strong for everyone).

But I now know we will go to FL, we will have a great family vacation, and I will race.
Thanks for letting me share.

I'm so happy you all got good news!!! Now it sounds like it's time to take a little "you" time and de-stress.  {{{{hugs}}}}

Plainsman AU - 2009-04-30 3:54 PM SHOULD I GO WITH A PLAN OR "WING IT"?

Let me start by saying I know a whole lotta nothing about HIM training, but I can offer my advice based on my running experience.  I used to think I could "wing-it" and make sure I did X number of long runs and a bunch of mileage, but I never got better.  Then I started following a plan and guess what? some improvement!  It wasn't until I got a coach that I was able to BQ, but both examples point to the importance of following some plan (with flexibility for life of course).  Think back to how you have approached your training thus far, how would you do it for the HIM?

The reason I got a tri coach is I really didn't understand how to integrate three disciplines, especially when one is strong and one is really weak. The basic plans don't take that into consideration. I tend to overdue, but now after the injury that is a really bad idea. I am accountable to a coach and that helps me.

To me a HIM is not a distance to mess around with if you want to finish strong.

Just my two cents!
