I found the downhills scary fast and was not able to ever really get comfortable in the aerobars. The road is just too rough. With a crowd, it will be slower and I'll need to be on my toes watching for tired riders. All this has made me plan on RECOVERY only on the downhill portion. Too much to risk to go down at 35-40 mph. I just won't do it. I tend to echo this sentiment. The risk/reward of barreling down at 30+ mph in aero with rough roads and surrounded by other, possible tired riders - is not appealing. I'd rather give up the 10 minutes per loop and have a hand near a brake. |

Not only will I be up on race day earlier than I am used to, I will be losing an hour with the time zone change. Damn, I need to stop with the mental part of this... |

I can get in the drops and be almost as areo as in the aero bars, plus have my hands on or near the brakes. I have done a tri with alot of people on a short loop and spent the entire time going up and down in aero bars. I just hope there will enough room to get into a groove and stay there without running the risk of getting a drafting penalty. |

Extreme Veteran 456 Dana Point, California | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread There's a roughly .2 mile by .2 mile breakdown of the grade over in the IMSG thread at iamtri.com and according to that analysis there are 5 sections of the course, including 4 in the loop, that are 10%+ grade, two of those are 14%+ (including the top of that 3/4 mile climb you mention). Definitely the bulk of the course is false flats or downhills, but I counted around 40 0.2 mile sections in that analysis that were above 5% grade (meaning about 8 total miles of grade that will get your attention to deal with over the whole ride). I DID ALL THE CLIMBS 2x LAST MONTH...THEY ARE NO BIG DEAL AT ALL. HILLS..NOTHING MORE, AND NOT THAT TERRIBLY STEEP. HEAT/WIND ARE THE VARIABLES THAT WILL MAKE THE CLIMB UP TO VEYO DIFFICULT, IF NOT DEMORALIZING FOR SOME. TIME TO SUCK IT UP... |

Dude, I hear ya. I'm going solo and finishing that race is going to be amazing, but it would be nice to get a hug from someone you care about... I don't think it's childish ONE BIT. This is a huge deal and not most people can't even comprehend doing them, much less actually finishing. Crap, WAY more people graduate from HS than finish an IM and you would not DREAM of missing that. Maybe because this is something we choose to do? Finishing an IM, no matter how fast/slow is a huge accomplishment to be shared IMO (or it would be nice to share). It's not like a sprint or oly or maybe even an HIM where you can sort of "fake it" with minimal or zero training. I have been trying to recruit friends to go up and offered to but all their meals and share my room for free, just to have someone there. No luck. You're not the only one. I'm going solo too. There will be some awesome BT'ers from AZ up there that I've trained with, but they'll be suffering through the race as well. So I know what you mean about nobody being at the finish line to congratulate you. I'm used to it at this point (I go solo to most of my races), but for a race like this, I can see why you'd want someone cheering you on. |

Clearly, they have better forecasters! They might, but they only go 10 days. Tommorow is 10 days so we will see how much we like them.I think I need a drink, 10 days kinda just hit me when I typed it. All will be good, time to HTFU and race. |

My thought was saving weight for all the climbing. Plus, my 404's are ceramic, and I thought that might come in handy with the climbing as well. Is anybody on here running a disc out there? What was your rationale? This is my first IM and I'm even more excited than I thought I would be...I can't wait to get out there! |

Plus, I'M doesn't make it easy for solo people to carry a bike pump to t1 - supposed to give it to someone.... |

Let me know your race number and I will pass it on to them. They will make sure you are not "alone" at the finish line. The more people they can huge and cheer and congratulate, the happier they will be. And happy kids make everyone happy! Seriously. Just high fiving a child that has the look of amazement on their face from your accomplishment is worth YOUR WEIGHT IN GOLD. |

Just look for me Saturday morning, shivering next to the red BMC Time Machine with the number 1319 on it. If you prefer your own pump, I can give it to my family to take to the finish for you. We can plan to meet Sunday morning so you can get it back. We are happy to help any "solo" folks out. There is no reason you should not have the same experience and support as the rest of us. Just let us know what you need and you will get it. Ride home from the Finish included because I expect that we all will leave everything ounce of our soul and energy on the course...that is the way we are programmed as triathletes. Sign us up to help you! |

My rule book says it is okay. Excerpt from page 17 of the Athlete Guidebook for Ironman St. George. Run Course Rules & Instructions 1. No form of locomotion other than running, walking or crawling is allowed. 2. Athletes must wear their Ironman issued bib number in front of them clearly visible at all times on the course. Bib numbers identify the official athletes in the race. Folding, cutting the bib number, intentional alteration of any kind, or failure to wear race number is STRICTLY PROHIBITED and may result in disqualification. 3. NO INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT VEHICLES OR NON-PARTICIPANT ESCORT RUNNERS ARE ALLOWED. This is an individual endurance event. Teamwork as a result of outside assistance, which provides an advantage over single competitors, is not allowed. Individual support vehicles or non-participant escort runners will result in disqualification. A non-participant escort runner includes Athletes who have withdrawn from the race, have been disqualified or have finished the race. Friends, family, members, coaches or supporters of any type may not bike, drive or run alongside athlete, may not pass food or other items to athlete and should be warned to stay completely clear of all Athletes to avoid the disqualification of a athlete. It is incumbent upon each athlete to immediately reject any attempt to assist, follow, or escort. It IS permissible for an athlete who is still competing to run, slap or grab with other Athletes who are still competing. |

New user 18 | Subject: RE: Ironman St. George - Utah : Official Thread Speaking of special needs bags, WHERE are they going to be? And how often will be have access to them? Seems to me that with all the looping on the bike and two out and backs on the run there is potential we could be able to get some of those bags twice if needed. |
