Morning my McFuzzy peeps!  Happy Friday!  Any racers this weekend?

So, the question of motivation has come up and I'm wondering what everyone does to keep motivated day in and day out?  Here's what I do.  Back in December at the Las Vegas Rock-N-Roll marathon expo I was doing a little shopping (perhaps my favorite part of the race experience...that and post race pizza) and I came across a little silver charm that simply had 'tri' stamped on it.  I bought it without hesitation.  A few weeks later I bought a beautiful silver chain and I hung that necklace up and decided after my first HIM training session I would put it on and wear it everyday after to remind myself what I'm working towards.  January 1st I completed my first training session and I've been wearing it everyday since (although I must admit I take it off for workouts...I don't like anything bugging me while I'm working hard).  A lot of my students ask what the 'tri' means and I love explaining to them the meaning behind it.

Anybody else have a little daily reminder?

Happy three day weekend!!!

I don't have any daily reminder to help with motivation - unless you count being able to fit in my skinny jeans.  Other than that, having an upcoming race and wanting to finish strongly helps get me out the door.  Right now, I don't have a particular tri scheduled, but I do have a marathon scheduled for Feb., so that keeps me running.  Not having a tri anytime soon allowed me to justify blowing off my swim this morning.  I, of course, feel very guilty for doing so - guilt is also a motivator Smile

Happy 3 day weekend to those lucky enough to have Monday off - I will be in the office feeling sorry for myself.

Daily reminders...looking at myself in the mirror (shirtless gives me even more motivation). I have one of those "motivational posters" on my desk labeled "Perseverance" which has the quote in my sig on it.

Finally, I force myself daily to look at people's facebook page. Particularly a couple guys my age from around my hometown whom I've known for years. They also participate in triathlons and they aren't bad guys but as bad as it sounds, I know I'm supposed to be doing these for me, I won't let them beat me in a race. There are also some punks that I COULD NOT STAND growing up registered for a 1/2 mary back home and its the same thing, I want to SMOKE them in the mary. Like I said, I know its bad to use that as motivation, but whatever it takes I guess. Undecided

Spiritual life aside, resentment has always been a motivator for me

Yes, I have the motivational posters...the daily quotes...and a wife who cheers me on.  The last is the most important when it comes to that.  But bottom line, no body is strong enough to kick my butt out of a warm bed to head to a cold pool at 4 a.m.  Last night on the trainer busting said butt, I realized I had a huge smile on my face.  The music was blaring, I was exceeding the goals, no one was in the house but me, the cat and the bird and there I was grinning.   Motivation is an internal furnace that I keep stoked with positive thinking, positive reading, meditation and goals.

Kim,

Thanks for the thought-provoking question this morning!  (It really make my job as mentor pretty easy when protege's start these kinds of discussions.

What motivates me?  Historically, it's been the risks of not being prepared for the challenge.  As I said in my bio, the 12-day backpacking trip was looming, and I wanted to enjoy the experience.  That meant losing weight and getting fit, but there was always a question of whether I was doing "enough."  Would I be ready so that I competely enjoyed the trip?  Turns out I was!  It was much harder to train for the same trip 3 years later.  A bit of complacency (I knew I was more than ready the previous time) and a few other demands on my time made it more difficult to get the desired training done.  Training for the Half-Ironman in 2006 was again motivated by "can I do this?"  Training for IMCdA in 2008/9?  Yup, big, somewhat scary goal provided a lot of incentive to hit the bricks or get on the bike.

In some ways, it is less about motivation and more about lifestyle/habit.  Getting out the door to meet up with Natalie for a 5AM (preferably 5:15AM) run is simply part of who I am.  At the same time, I do have people who ask me about my training.  I have people ask me how I made sustainable changes.  I have a few people here on BT who bust my chops when I start slacking.  I also have protege's watching me to see how to do things themselves.  All provide some motivation.

Love the question about motivation.
I haven't had to struggle too much with getting myself out the door. I LOVE getting out the door. Once I start putting my running clothes on I feel like I'm dressing for battle, I start getting psyched up. I
have too little kids (2 and 4) and a career, life is hectic and full, I find training to be a big relaxing sigh of relief in my day. For me what gets hard is finishing workout sessions. Sometimes I cant wait for them to be over, I get impatient and I'll want to stop early. What I do is remind myself of how luck I am that my life is such that I am able to spend time doing this (its weird to be doing something you REALLY don't want to be doing and telling yourself you are lucky to be doing it at the same time) Also i remind myself how miserable I was (depressed really) when I was injured last year and couldn't run at all for months. Finally, I'll smile, that helps.

Seems appropriate that motivation is the topic for the day since mine seems to have gone on vacation (and didn’t take me with itLaughing).  I think my lack of motivation the last couple of weeks has been due to a couple of things.  Part of it is a still messed up weekly schedule.  I’m hoping that once things settle down at work next week and my DS and his GF head back to college this weekend, I can get back into a more normal routine.  Granted, the same things week after week can get a little boring at times, but at least I know what to expect, for the most part anyway.  Part of it is also the weather/time of year.  It’s making me want to just curl up under a blanket and read a book or watch a movie.  Of course, there’s also the part that’s in my head.  I’ve never been good at self-motivation so talking myself out of a workout is usually a lot easier than talking myself into one.  Having a race/races on the schedule helps – it’s kept me running for the most part to get ready for my half marathon in March.  I know my motivation/desire to workout will go up once we get through winter – it’s just getting to that point that I’m finding tough.

Motivation for me is many things ....  The skinny jeans still in the box that I only got to wear for 3 months before putting the weight back on.  Keeping up with the Boy Scouts on the campouts and hikes.  Reminding myself that this is just the start of a whole new me that is closer to the person I WANT to be.  And lastly not letting down the wonderful people in my life who have believed in me from the beginning and supported me so much.

It's also kind of fun to be told you are amazing for doing something that is really no big deal.  (running in single digit temps)

Now a year ago, you were the one shaking your head in amazement as I described running in single-digit temps.  Now you're the one doing it yourself.

We're all capable of amazing things!

Movie suggestions...

Ok, so I'm looking for some movies to watch during trainer rides. My collection/interests are your typical "guy" movies. Some dvd's I have are: The Hangover, The Godfather, Unforgiven, Se7en, Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Raging Bull, Deer Hunter, Casino, Grandma's Boy...etc. I have a rather extensive collection.

I think it could be handy for everyone if we listed a bunch of movies to keep our attention as trainer rides get longer. Netflix will work great for this

The last three movies I saw: Harry Potter, Book of Eli and Inception (in that order. Yes I was behind the ball on Inception.) were all good. Inception is ridiculous (in a good way) IMO, I watched it 3x in 3 days. For any Harry Potter buffs that haven't seen the newest one, wait until July. Part 1 leaves you hanging pretty bad. I wish I would have waited. Book of Eli is an above average flick.

Great idea!  I'm currently working through season 3 of Dexter during my long rides.  In fact I just got the next DVD in the mail but I'm keeping it until Tuesday when I do a long ride.  I also DVR a lot of shows that I don't stay up to watch at night...Modern Family, The Soup, a new show on MTV called I Used to Be Fat--very motivational actually!  The Biggest Loser, Survivor, Hell's Kitchen.

I tend to go for older movies tv/series.  In no particular order Lost Boys, Young Guns I and II, Tombstone, Willow, Princess Bride, Labrynth, Stardust (If you like Princess Bride).

For TV series - Buffy, Angel, Firefly (there is only one season), and The Unit.

Also you could watch every single James Bond in order

Responding to the question of motivation and daily reminders... my biggest motivation is to stay healthy.  I just read in today's newspaper that 43% of people with IBS found symptom relief after 3 months of engaging in 20 to 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise three to five days a weeks.  I would definitely agree.  I have Crohn's Disease, but my GI doc agrees with that my "tri-lifestyle" has helped to keep the disease in check.   Triathlon helped me get healthy and is helping to keep me that way.

And for a daily visual reminder.....I have a swim, bike, run tattoo above my left ankle.

I'm with you, I want to get healthy and stay healthy.

Regarding tattoo: My husband designed his tattoo, and his goal was to get it once he finished his IRON MAN.  He had the appointment all set up, and had sent the design to the guy a head of time.  The day after the IRON MAN we went and he got it.  It looks pretty sweet.  You got pictures of your  tattoo?  I'd love to see it. - Maria

I guess for everyone the motivations are different.  For me there are a few things... It really is a question that took me 8 months to decide the answer for myself.  The reason I started the tri lifestyle was because I commited to an Ironman befor I ever knew what it would entail.  Why did I do that?  Good question... answer too long to post here, but the point is this:  I figured out along the way that the road to the Ironman was more important to me personally than the actuall race itself.   The race was just the icing on my cake.

I keep the metal that I got for finishing the IMKY hanging at my desk with a photo of myself crossing the finish line that says " I would rather live one day as a lion, than a lifetime as a lamb."  Everytime I look at the metal and the picture it reminds me of the unbelievable feeling that I had when I crossed the finish line and the announcer said "Joshua Kugler from Pleasant Lake, Indiana... YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!"

I also carry a tatoo with me all day long that reminds me of what it is all about.  And if I ever need a little extra push, I just look at fat pictures of the summer befor I started Tri-ing.

I did Vegas too .....

Daily reminder- what motivates me is the feeling I get if I don't workout... Anxious, nervousness, stressed... Working out is my "therapy". A way I can get all my emotions and stress out in a positive way! I all know that I can "fake" a marathon.  I can't really fake an IM. Like Josh said training is the hard part. The actual race is easy in comparison.

Hey guys and gals!  Thanks for all the inspires and notes checking in on me! You are all awesome!

School started back up this week, and the first week is always CHAOS getting our schedule back down, between me , hubs and the kids!  I'm in for my last 14 credit hours before internship and I am finally a graduate.  It's been a long road.   I'm also back at my on -campus job as the exercise science lab assistant, so I'm trying to refresh my brain on sub V02 max and body composition protocals!!

But I'll be more active around here in the coming weeks once I get the chaos under control, hahaha!  Wink   Have a great weekend ya'll!

laurak11 - 2011-01-12 11:55 AM Just checking in on everyone... How are is your training going?? strengths/weaknesses?

-started p90x- lets just say my abs, legs, butt, back, and shoulders are VERY sore. I probably haven't been this sore since 3-a-days when I played college vball.
-IM training going well. Tweaked a few workouts here and there but def sticking to it. Just ordered a new tri outfit for the IM. 2 out 3 bike shorts have holes in them :P

-strength- haven't drank in 10 days!! That's an accomplishment b/c I was drinking probably 3 times a week during the holidays (super stressed).
-weakness- still not sleeping well. Getting about 6 hrs a night, and then taking a nap. I'm going to try to get 7 hr straight which will be hard since I'll be working nights th-sun.

WOW, I can relate. I pretty much gave up the weekly drinking. I had beer last night, but it had been... since New Years. Makes a huge difference doesn't it? P90x has to wait until tomorrow for me. (girl stuff) but after that I'm right there with you!!

My triathlon coach is giving me a swim lesson monday after bridge repeats (oy) but since I haven't worked out in 14 days, I'm extrememly anxious to get back into the groove.

OK the weird coincidences continue. I'm NOT a good sleeper, never have been and I've tried everything, which, it turns out, is the answer. I need to be warm, but need cool air (fan) and I need to read before I sleep. NO TV in the bedroom and NO TV or computer within an hour of sleep. Sometimes it helps to have a warm bath before bed. If I wake up WIDE AWAKE, it helps to go through the face washing and toothbrushing...read and try again. Anyway, best of luck to you. I manage to get 7 to 9 hours most nights. I just don't fight it anymore. The biggest help, exercise. Good grief I can ramble on....

Strength - increasing mileage and still sticking with the runs
Weakness - Having a very hard time with cutting back smoking (think I may just have to suck it up and go cold turkey and deal with the aftermath of xtreme witchiness)

Very Wise. Just quit. You're not a smoker, you're a runner.
