I am just running a 5K on Saturday. Just something to get another workout in.

I am looking to purchase my 1st wetsuit and I need some help. I already know that I want fullsleeve and Xterra(great discount from my tri club). Now here is my situation. I am looking at the following Vortex 3 Fullsuit and the Vector Pro X2 I doggie-paddle in a "used" Vortex 3 Full Sleeve for going on 4 years now. ( I bought it used so have no idea how old it really is....) It has been a great suit and if cared for properly is as much suit as I have ever needed. However, Fit is the key! One major rule with any Tri-equipment is "Something that doesn't fit is never a deal." LMAO @ Doggie-paddle!! I use a squid like back stroke movement.Yea fit is def a big concern, I dont know what would be defined as too tight. Are there any signs in fit I should look for? Are wetsuits supposed to fit like compression clothing? I am assuming it should be tight but my chest should be able to expand easily for breathing with out major constriction Check Dino's logs and you will find that he is no doggie paddler. He is one of the faster swimmers in the group (well for the guys anyway...there are a lot of kick-a$$ women swimmers here!). As fars as I can tell, the rest of his post is full of true info

Master 1478 Horseheads, NY | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed Was just sitting at my desk looking out the window and the sun that has shown up for the first time in several days (and likely to be the last time for another week at least!). The wind is starting to pick up because we might get t-storms later. Suddenly, an empty Yuengling beer case goes blowing by. I am taking it as a sign that I should be packing up, getting out of here and having a beer!!

No racing, but next week I will. I'm freakin' out just a tad...less than stellar training compared to last year, but last year I was very new, this time, I know what to expect. Hope I can do a PR. Trying not to compare myself to others too much...OCD...grr. :-P Staying Healthy - Definitely the training. It helps me to drink a lot more water, keep my body moving often instead of just sitting down everyday and watching TV/playing video games. I took off about a month or two of absolutely nothing just to refresh myself mentally and physically....I'm not doing that again. Gained a little weight and became sluggish! |

No racing here. I agree on sleep being really important and listening to your body comes in a close second. If I'm not getting quite enough sleep and am also pushing the training a little too hard, my 10 minute power nap turns into 30-40 minutes. Whenever that happens, I skip or cut back on my next tough workout. |

Sleep, eating well (or trying), and training are probably what helps me stay healthy. It's sometimes difficult living with my two petri dishes but I also think my dad blessed me with some very good genes to aid me. |

No racing for me yet (but soon!) Unfortunately, I don't do much of anything to stay healthy; that's how I got into this shape. Running and regulating my bedtimes is a starting place, though. |

David, you are not kidding, that is a great place to start! people keep talking to me about this bedtime thing...perhaps I should give that a tri....?? actually, nutritionist told me last week it ought to be my #1 goal for lifestyle change... ...tho the best thing i think i did for my training this week was to take advantage of a great club discount and spring for the FINIS swimp3 - got to swim with it yesterday, and the sound quality underwater was amazing. made that mile fly by....! |

Anybody have an extra house/bedroom that is quiet that I can sleep in. Some observations about the early morning: 1) It is dark out 2) It is very quiet 3) There are other people actually up doing things - are you kidding me 4) The dogs want to eat no matter what time it is 5) Coffee is especially gooooood 6) My body is saying ---WTF are you doing to me. 7) My brain is saying ....I love getting up early....over and over.....not sure it has convinced the body... OK the training is done.... Can I go back to sleep now? You have done better than me. Body doesn't want to function that early usually stiff. Great Job keep it up |

No racing for me....my #1 tip for staying healthy is sleep, 7-8 hours every night (unless I'm traveling for work). I got to bed roughly the same time weeknights or weekdays and wake up the same time too....for me, it makes a big difference. Nothing for me. As for being healthy that is why I started cycling, running, and swimming. |

I've done a couple of sprint tris earlier this year so I've got a vague idea but I'm not sure about pacing, hydration, gels etc.
Thanks, David PS Best advice for keeping healthy: making exercise part of your daily routine and keeping your weight at the right level - trust your training, and just race at YOUR pace - hydration and gels are the same as if you were training. I kept my nutrition very simple. Heed and water on the bike (ended up using just one bottle of Heed), two gels (took one on the bike and one on the run), and shot blocks for a boost. That's it. So, do what works for you. Some people need more, other people need less - don't allow the faster people get you down, it will be humbling, but if you pushed yourself too hard, you'll suffer at the end. This is where - TRUST your training comes in. - enjoy the day, and just smile. - and oh yeah...very VERY important - do NOT drink Pumpkin Spice Latte on Race day. For sure you'll end up scouring for a bathroom (see my RR for Pumpkinman...STUPID idea, but I had SOOOO much fun for my first Oly race) - I wasn't fast, but I wasn't the slowest either. I suffered a lot of hills on the bike, so I expected to be slow. Went slower on the run because I had to make a serious pit stop. Other than that, I didn't care. - this is your first Olympic, so, you'll have more chances to do more Olympics and do better. Your first Olympic is a PR. :-P |

Thanks, David PS Best advice for keeping healthy: making exercise part of your daily routine and keeping your weight at the right level I don't have tremendous experience at this distance, but for me the difference between Sprints and Olys is I start to take in some calories on the bike to fuel the run (in sprints I take in nothing). It's also the place where I am in a solid mid to upper Z3 on the bike and Z3/4 on the run depending on what I have left in the tank. Edited by SSMinnow 2011-04-21 6:54 AM |
