I'll have to get my beer map out, but definitely hit Switchback brewery tap room not far from downtown. A friend owns Farmhouse Tap and Grill just off Church Street - local farm to table fare and an amazing beer list. Vermont Pub and Brewery is decent - they usually have Maple Beer this time of year made with sap and their Burley Irish Ale is tasty. Magic Hat's Brewery isn't far but I don't like their beer so I haven't been. Otter Creek Brewing is a bit down the roads, also decent. Here in Essex there's a little Tap room for First Republic Brewing and in Waterbury there is, of course, Heady Topper. Stowe - go to Von Trapp Family Lodge (yes, the Sound of Music family) - they make beer and it's gooood. There are lots of great restaurants in Burlington. For delicious Italian go to Trattoria Delia, for amazing local pizza almost next door to it is.. ..blanking... shoot, I'll have to get back to you on that one. Leunig's on Church Street is always tasty but you may need reservations. Is your plan to stay right in Burlington or are you going to venture outside of it? Ack, sorry so long Thanks Jenn! I'm back. We stayed in South Burlington basically across the street from Magic Hat. Were going to go because it was right there but opted to just go downtown instead after seeing 4 other breweries. We went to Zero Gravity first (where I tried what is now my first barrel aged IPA), then Queen City across the street, then Switchback which was having a 'mardis gras dog party', then out to Shelburne to go to Fiddlehead. We had dinner at the Vermont Pub and Brewery. From there it just turned into a pub crawl. The Archives is one of my new favorite spots anywhere - for the uninitiated, they converted the former printing house for the local paper into a bar/arcade. The place is gorgeous - old industrial/wood. Love it. Then they have a phenomenal tap selection (tried both Hill Farmsteads on tap as well as a couple others). They make beautiful and tasty cocktails. AND they have a large collection of old school arcade games. And they all work. I played Spy Hunter for the first time since probably 1985. Also had drunk 2am pizza by the slice at what may be the place you are blanking on the name of. And I have no idea what it was called I wasn't in any shape to pay any attention haha. Anyone visiting New England owes it to themselves to check out Burlington. It's pretty much beer mecca. Half the bars downtown have cans of Focal Banger and Heady Topper. It's almost as easy to get as like a bud light or something. Also did I mention Hill Farmstead on tap? Seriously the only way I thought I would ever get to try Hill Farmstead was to make the trek into the middle of nowhere VT and find the farm... Awesome! I'm glad you had a good time!! If your pizza joint was on a corner, it was probably Mr. Mike's - always good for a post-midnight slice of pie. I forgot to mention to stop by Nectar's for gravy fries. This is where Phish got its start. I wish I had known sooner you were coming up, I would have made arrangements so I could have at least pop down for a pop! Burlington is only about 20 minutes away. Oh, I have heard of The Archives but haven't been there yet. It sounds like I need to make a trip down! |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Hi all! I'm still reading and getting in sporadic workouts here and there. I did a lot of flying last week so not great on the workouts, but current in the skies (and clouds). This week my school is back (had vacation last week), but my kids' school is now on vacation so I'm getting a double-whammy and not much in the way of workouts but lots of dog-walking which is good. My hubby surprised me today. As he was driving to Albany and chatting via phone with me he mentioned I should just start training for IMMT and see how my body handles it. My plan would have had me start a month ago so I lost a bit there, but my swims are on target and my running is about 20 minutes shy of where it needs to be. Now I just need to literally get back in the saddle (of my bike that is) and slowly build back. I did this training last year so I know what to expect this time around (remembering I threw my back out in mid-March and was off rails for 5 weeks) so I'm still ahead of the game compared to last year. So long as I can keep my leg where it needs to be...... He said, so if I don't end up doing it, I'll be over-prepared for the 2 HIM's I already have planned... HHhhhhhmmmmmmmmm. Such food for thought..... The reason he brought this up is I am looking at a potential job prospect and if I get it, time for full IM training will all but go away. He wants me to check this off my list in case I get the job. Awwwwwwee. Kind man. Am I nuts to think this is a possibility? I want it, but wishing I knew someone else racing. It was so special being in the race with my sis-in-law last year. We went up a week early and hung, trained on course, swam to the coffee boat together. It was just such a fun week. This time my family will be there but no one "in the pits" with me if you know what i mean. I've done plenty of races - HIM's even, completely alone with no support people but I know next year I have many friends who will be going....but I may not be able to go anyway... decisions, decisions... |

We had been planning the ski weekend for Lincoln, NH up until maybe 5 days prior, then I thought I wasn't going to be able to go at all, and finally as of Thursday I was confirmed for Friday night. Sort of how it goes with these guys, flying by the seat of the pants. It was like college all over again - leaving late on a Friday for a 4 hour drive, in a minivan with 200k miles that shakes like an earthquake and has an iffy battery, white knuckling it through the worst fog I've ever driven in, checking into a hotel at 1030 pm and promptly going out drinking until 1. And then we all woke up at 7 because we have kids and it's not natural to sleep past then haha... |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Happy hump day!! I did boot camp this morning and it CRUSHED me. My friend came with me today and said it was the hardest class she's ever taken at the gym. I have to agree. I also have decided I am going to compete in my first swim meet since 6th grade this weekend. Not sure what events yet, but my coach thinks I should do the 500 since my times have been slow compared to my 100 and 200 TT. He also said I should do okay in the 100 and 200 FS. Not sure if I want to do both, or do one and then try two other strokes (maybe breast of backstroke). We can do up to 4 individual events. Will let you guys know what I decide! I am still going to keep working out as though I am not doing a meet though, which I know I probably shouldn't, but I just re-joined the Baltimore tri club (because I signed up for the October Baltimore Triathlon the other day!) and they are offering this group workout right near me Saturday at this awesome gym that costs way too much for me to do it on my own and I don't want to miss it but I'm pretty sure I will regret it at the meet. We shall see! |

I had a friend do IM Boulder last year after doing the 70.3 Her sister convinced her that there would never be an easier time to train for it since she was already in 70.3 form. She had a baby like 10 months after the race so she is very happy she caught that window and did it. Sometimes the timing just lines up well and you should give it a try! |

I'll get a race report up shortly, but wanted to let DQ know that I did have a couple beers to celebrate Time was 45:53 -- a 7:23/mile pace And for the important stuff, I had (shared) two IPA's (back to back to compare flavor profiles) and two milk stouts (one brewed with cacao nibs and one with cinnamon and chilis) from one of our local breweries. Houston's beer scene has come a long way in the five years I've lived here....and people are starting to attempt some NEIPA style beers, which is really exciting because I can't get to Trillium or Treehouse on any regular basis! Nice Race!!! And milk stout with cinnamon and chilis sounds fabulous!!! |

Dave pinged me to come back. I hope everyone is doing well! I will start reading up soon. I have a question. I started doing Masters for my NY resolution. I've been going twice a week at 6AM and swim for an hour usually just around 3k yards. I'm exhausted. Any idea when I will get used to this and be less exhausted? I though I would be in more of a groove by now. On a good note I'm feeling stronger in the water and broke 30 on a 50 from a push. So other than feeling constantly like a nap I am living the swimming. YEA!!! KATE IS BACK! I'm not sure when you will start feeling better but it means you are getting in killer workouts! I would say that the fact that you've been tired for so long might mean that the class is doing a good job of keeping you challenged. What does the group think?
+1 welcome back Kate!! Regarding the exhaustion - are you normally an early riser? If I have to get up early even if I do it every day, I never get used to it. I am not normally a 5:15 riser - it's killing me. But I had a great swim this morning and always feel great on Wed. by Friday I'm super tired. |

+1 welcome back Kate!! Regarding the exhaustion - are you normally an early riser? If I have to get up early even if I do it every day, I never get used to it. I meant to reply to this the other day, but somehow forgot. Are you eating and hydrating enough? Are you getting enough sleep? While I am tired when my alarm goes off, I'm usually fine within about 10 minutes unless there's something else going on. Though I did listen to a podcast a couple weeks ago where they talked about one's "chronotype" and some people are just not wired to be morning people (at least it's not natural, though you can generally "train" it). I thought it was interesting because they were talking about people who are perfectly content starting a long ride at something like 3pm....and I quickly realized that I would be miserable doing that! I'm definitely more of a morning person, but also willing to do some training in the evenings, as long as it's kept to about an hour. |

Get well soon Gretchen. Life took over for me today. Flat tire this evening caused me to miss my Wednesday night swim. Yuk. First missed workout of the plan so far. I understand it's gonna happen so I'm trying not to be too mad about it, but naturally I'm annoyed. On the bright side I now can't get to work in the morning so an impromptu day off means a bike ride outside in great weather instead of after work on the trainer. -Matt |

I say what about a million times on the mornings I swim. I can never get all of the water out. I do a special hop that always works for me. Instead of just bouncing your head, bounce your whole body (so hop up and down) with your head bent so your ear is towards the floor. It's super awkward looking and hard to explain so I wish I could show you in person, but it's very effective for me. Someone also told me the other day that rubbing alcohol and vinegar dries it out. Just put a couple drops in and let it drain out. Edited by nicole14e 2017-03-02 8:14 AM |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN ^^ I do pretty much the same thing, except more like a calf lift than a hop. Just tilt your head to the side and then do a calf lift. Then drop back into your heels with a little force (just let gravity take over). Two or three times per side usually does the trick. |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS)--OPEN Ok simplifying my questions. 1. Since I have a good aerobic base built, and I'm sprint distance training, is a lack of a rest day a bad thing? 2. When racing multiple races in a season, do you plan to build and taper for your A race, and let the other races fall where they may on the calendar? Or build and taper for your first race, then repeat some part of the plan for each subsequent race? 3. Any suggestions for a source of specific workouts in all disciplines? The BT plan just has number of minutes. Thanks! Originally posted by firebert I'm getting into 'training plan' mode and have a few questions. My training plans the past two years have been cobbled together and usually involve thumbing through at least two books, an app, and checking the workout calendar to see what the heck I'm supposed to be doing. This year I'm opting to modify one of the BT plans (16 week sprint bike focused) mostly for simplicity. 1. The plan has two doubles and two rest days. I know I should have at least one rest day, but I'm not sure I can if I keep keep up my boot camp Thursday nights. My best rest day would be long bike saturday morning and long run sunday afternoon, allowing ~32 hours or so in between. Is this ok? I'm just doing sprint distance here nothing crazy. I think my longest bike is 2 hours and my longest run like 40 minutes. 2. How bad are back to back swim days? The plan has swim/bike doubles Monday and Wednesday, but neither works. So I've moved Monday's swim to Tuesday (previously an off day) and thinking of moving Wednesday's swim to Friday, then moving Friday's bike to Saturday morning (which was supposed to be the other off day). Alternately I'd keep the swims Tuesday and Wednesday I'm just thinking that's a bad idea for a guy with bad shoulders. 3. The above still leaves me with one double on Thursday, a short run then boot camp. The trouble with this is my short run is my speed day, and I'll be useless for anything involving legs at boot camp. I -could- move Thursday's speed run to Wednesday, putting the short run/med bike on the same day for a double instead. Or - does anyone use a book or something for Sprint/Oly training that has a good speed focused set up? Even with the above shuffling I still have to put actual workouts in place - the BT plan pretty much just has number of minutes spelled out, and level of intensity for short v long days. 4. And, the above is assuming training up for and tapering for my first race, as opposed to my A race. Is doing the first (and second) race, then repeating some portion of the plan ok? How do you training plan for 3 races in 3 months? |

The BT plan just has number of minutes. Thanks! 1. Not having a full rest day is not a problem, imo. Looking back through my TrainingPeaks log, it looks like I have not taken a full rest day since November 27th. It does, however, require that you listen to your body and plan for some easy days. In fact, schedule easy days! As a general rule of thumb, you can go hard in swimming most of the time (assuming good technique and no nagging shoulder issues or whatever), you can go hard on the bike a lot of the time, and your running should be mostly easy with a little hard thrown in. 2. Personally, I choose my A race and build/taper for that, and let the other races fall where they may. For these B/C races, I may pull back a little bit in the week leading up to them, but I'm certainly not letting them detract from building to my A race. For example, I'm training for Galveston 70.3, which is a month from today. I raced a 10k last weekend, and the only things that changed were a) hard bike sessions moved up 12-24 hours earlier in the week than they normally would have been and my long ride was after the race, and b) I didn't do a track workout in the week and let my 10k race act as the track day (was also basically my long run day with a good warm-up and warm-down). 3. Sorry, I don't have much suggestions for this. Do you swim with a masters group? If so, let them dictate your swimming. Do you bike with power (or virtual power)? If so, there was a mentor group a couple years ago that has some fantastic workouts. As for running, my suggestion is to keep it all easy until your volume is up over 20 (maybe even 30) miles per week. If you really feel "the need for speed", toss some 30 second strides in an occasional run (but not every run). Running is the discipline you're most likely to get injured doing, due to the high impact nature. |

When racing multiple races in a season, do you plan to build and taper for your A race, and let the other races fall where they may on the calendar? Or build and taper for your first race, then repeat some part of the plan for each subsequent race? Anything that isn't an A race is a training race/day. It is not job, go have fun! 3. Any suggestions for a source of specific workouts in all disciplines? The BT plan just has number of minutes. I have just bought TrainerRoad for a month...so far so good! PS: I am using the virtual power mode. Thanks!
