Looks like I am on the sidelines for a bit longer - went to the ortho today, appears I injured my MCL - not horribly or anything, but its going to take another 3-4 weeks to heal.  I am bummed out that I am not going to be able to run in the White Rock 1/2 marathon...  Anyone else ever hurt their MCL?

sorry to hear.  man that is a bummer.  but at least you're only out for a month or so.  and there are plenty of half's around here.    never did tear the mcl.

SSMinnow - 2009-11-10 10:32 AM YEAH Roni!!! Our Lonestar group is growing....who's next?

YEAH Jeremy!!!  Our Racine 70.3 group is growing....who's next?

Tracy....way to get back on the horse...heal up and get training!

Tony....are you nuts?

I'm traveling for work through Thursday which means hours of meetings in a single conference pool. Blech!  Need to get in a quick swim then I am off to Racine.....Jeremy, I'll check out the lake for you.  It's usually a wreck this time of year.

The IM site says the temps are rarely above 68... Do you remember what hotel you recommended?

If you are staying two nights go with the Radisson Harbourwalk, Racine WI.  It is literally a 2 minute walk to the start and located right on the water.  It's an ok hotel, but the location cannot be beat. Plus it is walking distance to the downtown restaurants.

As usual... I should have listened to Suzy. I didn't make my Moody Gardens reservations ahead of time and they are now full race day. Texas peeps- what other hotels are within walking distance of the race site or might have a shuttle service?

Sweet deal Roni. I think the texans need to organize a MG area now at the Gardens!! We're getting a bunch of us now.John this is your call to action.
Roni, there were a few others on the website that seemed to be close by. Was there a waiting list at Moody to get onto?

Yeah I believe we were going to try to get a tent near the finish for family and friends to hang out in and for everyone to have a place to drink beer while waiting for John to finish.

i didn't know you were doing the sprint.  thats awesome.  food will be cooked and beer cold when i finish the 70.3 around 5:51

You people are all going to be drunk when I come strolling across the finish line - HOWEVER YOU ALL BETTER SAVE ME A BEER OR THREE....

ETA - I ain't drinking the backwash out of all those bottles....

I'm pretty sure I could get drunk on the backwash given how many you'all consume. ...is that how they say it in TX?

Holy crap - they are booked except for a suite at $200 a night.  I don't think I'll be in the room long enough to enjoy 200 a night.  We'd be there 3 nights too... unless we drove in Saturday.  I guess we could drive in Saturday and stay Sunday then head home.  I'm guessing that I won't want to be driving too much Sunday night.

with everyone signing up for Lonestar it makes it difficult not to be able to. Who knows maybe there's a lottery winning in my near future .  I suspect my wife won't go for me going to Lonestar for our 30th anniversary next year. She isn' t impressed when I am gone for a day long event. Oh well I guess it's back to Muskoka and try to beat the crap out of it

Serious beginner question. What is the difference between tubular tires and clinchers?

Did someone here have a question about the pacer on the computrainer?

Here is a post on ST about it. http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=2581230

LOL, Rob I started to type all kinds of stuff out about tubulars but it turned into a book.

Read this. http://sheldonbrown.com/tires.html

It has some good comparisons.

Here's a good article on BT about the differences.

I personally feel more comfortable with clinchers... but mainly because that's all I've ever used.  I've heard that tubulars are a quicker change if you buy the tape (vs glue).  With clinchers you only have to carry a patch kit and a tube, not a whole tire, glue kit/stitch kit.

Tubulars are "supposed" to be faster if glued on properly, which isn't the easiest thing in the world.

Good clinchers, using latex tubes, can be just as fast though from everything I have read.

Has anyone heard of or used Biofreeze?  It was on course this weekend at all the med tables for topical pain relief.

It never dawned on me to slap some on my legs when I was having problems

Isn't that the "magic" spray they use in Premier League soccer over in England?

My message therapist uses BioFreeze now and then.  But really it's the same basics of a mixture of menthal and chamomile.  Just look at the active ingredients and compare them to others that you could find at the store.  I think BioFreeze is a little less greasy than others, but for the most part - same stuff.  There's some other contents that BF uses that are supposed to be more beneficial  topically.

If you're looking for something for pain - I'd say go for a topical NSAID.

ICY-HOT baby!  (Unless you have an open wound) It heats and cools at the same time - like magic!  That and it just smells athletic!  Beware of getting it on the sensitive bits though...  but that is story for another day....

Did you call them or look at the website?  You gotta call because IM has all the rooms locked up.  Otherwise, there is a Fairfield in town that is reasonable.  I am staying at the Marriott for $179.

I use both BioFreeze and IcyHot, but for different reasons.   The BioFreeze is what I use when I can't ice - usually after a chiropractic appt.  I can roll it on at the office and get a similar effect as ice -not as good but a good mobile alternative.   I use IcyHot when my muscles have a build up of lactic acid.  I usually put IcyHot on my legs when I go to bed, great clearing of the sinuses as well.  So to summarize, BioFreeze for icing and IcyHot for muscle soreness.

Firehouse humor is a quick finger full of it into someone's armpit.

But a quick serious side note - don't rub it on a sore back and then take a shower!

My advice is to book anything today and you can always cancel...honestly, there are so few hotels in Racine they will fill up.  I booked the Marriott before it even went 70.3.

Havin'Fun - 2009-11-09 1:48 PM Roni,  good job on pushing through and getting that training in.  Sorry to be so out of the loop - when is the Ultra?

Thanks, Linda! I'm doing the Woodside 50k on December 5th. Just made our hotel reservations yesterday, so we're all set to go!

Is it bad I was reading Runners World the other day and there was an article on the JFK 50 miler and said to myself, "wow that sounds like a lot of fun, I should train for that."

I'm just the opposite.  Somewhere around mile 9 on the run on Sunday I told the Houston Marathon to go F itself.  I want to spend a few weeks taking it easy and hanging out with the family A LOT more.  This is a super time of the year.  I'll switch it over to the half chill out for a little while.   Then focus on getting ramped up for lone star.

That's AWESOME news Roni!!!  Andy said if you signed up he'd get his nipple pierced too before the race so you guys could compare piercings.  Lets us know how that works out for ya brother

Okay man...You have to explain to my coworkers why i just laughed out so loud!!
"why did I laugh out  loud?" " Oh it was something funny that a buddy of mine that I haven't met yet said on a triathlon MG website."
That was one of the funniest things you have ever said John!

Hello group. I just got back from lunch with my new, starting next week, Triathlon coach.  I think I have reached the point where I can read more about how to improve, but having someone with proven results, who I can relate to and who can tailor a training program to me is the best use of my time and money. So we start next week and the winter is going to be run focused, as that is my weekness now, and because I am planning on running a marathon 3/21/10.

I am a little apprehensive, but I am excited too. This is a sure fire way to ward off any "off-season" blues.

Doug

Holy Moly!  3.5 pages since last night, you guys have been "working hard"

I just finished my last hard track workout before the marathon...which I cannot wait to get here, btw!
8 x 800's on 3:25's and I made my splits this time.

Boy, it seems like everyone is going to Lonestar, I feel so left out!

Can't wait to see Andy's piercing

My bike is almost done...we had decided on some Easton EA70 wheels that would be somewhat aero without breaking the bank, and now they are on backorder for awhile.
Anyone have any ideas?

I can really only think of one way to avoid the problem above!

Doug, congrats on finding the right coach.   I think it can make a big difference, especially when you are trying to hone certain skills.

Hey Sam, I have used biofreeze, but am kind of lukewarm on it.  Like Tracy said better than nothing, but icing trumps it IMO as well.

Later kids.  I'm out the door.

Neuvations.  Cheap and aero. I have the M28 front or R28 front, can't remember which, front wheel with skewer costs about 100 bucks, rear wheel is 150

If you go with their carbon wheels $429 front/$470 rear

Or you can go used.  Does your bike use 700 or 650's?  If 650's you can get amazing deals on used rims.

Also if you are willing to go tubular vs. clincher you can save some money there.  Most folks are afraid of tubulars so they seem to not be in demand as much.

Mostly comes down to how mch you want to spend.
