Something else I noticed in the article that doesn't seem to be brought up was about outside of running too. Going barefoot a lot of the time in the States may not really be possible, but there are more shoe options. I've been using a couple Merrel Barefoot shoes for some time instead of more traditional thicker soles. They have a nice variety of options for men & women in more lifestyle shoes, in addition to running or training shoes.

Jen, where are you coming from with shoes? The PureCadence may be lighter, but wouldn't put them in with racing flats, and that's probably a good thing here. It's also good that you want to learn to do it right. I went with more the approach of sliding over as opposed to completely starting over. That way I could keep running and not be so frustrated by taking such huge steps back. You'll be building up coming off an injury, so it won't be quite the same, but just wanted to put another perspective out there as it would have taken me at least several years of slow work had I tried to go with something much slimmer (much more lightweight than what you're looking at).

I guess in the long run, I want to avoid getting injured.  I'm not entirely sure why I got another stress fracture.  It's most likely because of too much on a not-completely-healed leg.  But I don't know.

I don't know what the right course of action is.  I figure if I want to transition over to a shoe with a lower heel, now is the time to do it.  One of my issues is that my calves always feel tight wearing Vibrams or walking barefoot, but I don't have that problem in my running shoes.  So, I'm putting stress on the calves and the bones without realizing it.  If I transitioned to something like the Cadence with a thinned sole, I wouldn't be able to mask it

I'm not entirely sure on the course of action either, but think than the main thing would be to dial it back and progress on the form development some how or other. The intention of bringing up what I did is more of a fit to personality. I did that way so I could keep running and would be ok with progressing more and then dial it back some each time a changed the shoe profile. I would have gone nuts trying to make a big jump with a super slim shoe. I would have had to slow down several minutes a mile and still do a walk/run like 100'/100' for quite awhile to make it work. Others prefers to make the one bigger step and then build more continuously from there.

At the moment I'm not sure how much or often you should be doing something to start off with, but in having several things going on there, you'll want to take it really easy for quite awhile. Always feeling like you're leaving a lot on the table each day. Not just by HR or how hard you're breathing, but by how your lower extremities are doing too. Because the muscles and other tissue can be smaller and less developed they won't send out a very strong signal that they're tiring until something is really wrong with them. It takes a little practice to develop a feel for that.

I'm not sure what the coming back to running plan is going to be.  It's typically really slow, and it will probably be even slower this time.  I may take the maximum I'm allowed as a long run, and then use that as the "3" in the "Barry 1-2-3" plan.

I know that if I use the lower heel drop shoe, I will NOT be able to run through any pain and I will have to work on my form much more than if I go back to my normal shoes.  That's a big reason I'm considering switching to the Cadence when I can run again.

So to add to our FACHMIE line of usable words I offer a new one. First the background. I spent a lot of last week with the agents from our Las Cruces office. They were telling me about some of the agents in the El Paso office who speak with Mexican accents. This became quite funny when a Ford Focus was added to their office fleet. Apparently when someone with a Mexican accent says focus it sounds more like f*ckus. So there you have it. I saw several Ford Focuses (focusi?) on the way to work today and each one made me chuckle. So I thought I should share it with y'all. Focus.

Also, I just saw the pix from the Live.Love.Tri. Apparently I am back to my pre-O'side weight. ugh Yell. I guess I need to pick another 70.3.

My good news for the week: I had a phone interview this morning! It lasted about an hour, so I take that as a good sign. Plus, the interviewer wants to set me up an interview with the director of molecular genetics, so I'm pretty excited. Fingers crossed that the next step goes well!

I went to a bike and truck safety fair this morning.

A portion of my commuting route is shared with the Port of Seattle trucking route. Needless to say it is very dangerous and I curse the truck drivers on the daily. As I am sure they curse me.

Anyway, truck drivers were there to educate us and us them. They had ride alongs and also gave us the ability to hop in the seat of one of the semis where they had cones set out to indicate visibility.

Wow. A whole new perspective. Which is what it's all about. I think doing more stuff like this is an amazing way for us all to coexist. Very cool.

Wow - that really is cool.  I think we sometimes take it for granted that they *should* be able to see us wherever we are (as cyclists) on the road.  I hope the truckers learned something too, besides new curse phrases.

That is way cool. DH has a CDL and I rode with him a few times when we were younger. It's amazing how different the view is from inside one of those beasts. And the amount of time it takes to stop one is ridiculous.

YEAH! That was probably the biggest eye opener. They had a cone waaaaaaaaay out that indicated how far the semi would travel before coming to a complete stop with a legal full load at 20 MPH. HOLY EFF!

Not to mention they can get permits to carry over the legal limit.

Hey TJ (and anyone else) now that you have read Switzer's book, if you get a chance give this podcast a listen: http://cloud259.com/2013/05/16/episode-8-oiselle-versus-the-establishment/

I thought they kind of went hand in hand.

In case you don't know, Lauren Fleshman parted ways with Nike and signed with Oiselle. She also is a co-founder of picky bars and is starting up a competitive running club in Bend this year. Anyway, her blog kicks azz: http://asklaurenfleshman.com/ for entertainment value AND thoughtful content in general.
