BunnyB - 2008-06-26 12:35 AM I think you look great, Beth! The photos from my race on Sunday went up today as well. They only got one of me and it was right as I was crossing the finish line. At least they got me during the one part of the race where I actually ran! LOL Photo is attached below. In other MAJOR news, my toe is feeling much better. So much so, that for the first time in YEARS, I actually jogged just over a half mile (0.54 mile) without any walk breaks! I was slow as hell (15:09 pace), but I did it!

thanks Melissa!

What a great pic of you as well!  I love finish line photos, they are the best!

that is awesome news about the toe!

Congratulations on the jog with no walk breaks!!!!!  I can totally relate to the feeling of accomplishment associated with that!!!

Keep up the great work - you are making wonderful progress and will be ever so ready for your tri!!!

My dear sweet Manatees! This is gonna come out all funky, but ... THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your i kiness and inspires, especially to Beth, Leslie, Miss Bunny, Dolores, Erin, and Renee for the inspires. Internet here is soooooo slow. Thank you all for holding the fort down ... all of you are such amazing and experienced athletes and it's beautiful to be a part of seeing you support each other.

It's gorgeous here, but HOT ... race looks to be about 90 with over that humidity. Just for fun! I've met some other potential DFLers, how do we find each other! I'm just so glad I'm in good company. I'm still kind of sick and have diarrhea now, too (nothing unusual), I'm just ...

Well gee, everything's usual, I'm going into a race undertrained and sick! Should be stellar!

Thinking of all the wonderful Manatees and your light and spirit which will carry me race day.

MWAH!!!

Glad to hear you made it safely, Yanti! We'll all be cheering you on in spirit from here this weekend. If my calculations are correct, it looks like you are 15 hours ahead of us here on the west coast, so I'll be cheering for you on Saturday evening.

Hey everybody! Sorry I've been so quiet lately. I've been pretty bogged down with work and my new training program has a ridiculous amount of training on it. I'm trying to hang with it but it's taxing to say the least.

Positive Thought of the Day: I swam three days this week and will be putting in some big miles on the bike in the next two days. I feel fairly good and it would appear that I'm still not having any issues from my accident. I'm very happy about that.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Good luck Yanti!!

Who's racing this weekend?

Good question! It's so hard to keep track these days, what with the bigger group and it being high season now.

There's a good chance I'll be running a 10k on Sunday, but I don't know how much I'll be "racing" it since I'm feeling pretty sluggish lately (to be expected -- I've upped my weekly mileage a fair bit).

Who else???

I've got Pacific Open Water Challenge - there are a bunch of BT'rs planning on being there too. I am really looking forward to it.   I think I may ditch the wetsuit....I had a really crappy swim this morning not just cuz the wetsuit but I don't think it helped.  Have a great weekend everybody!  I'll be checking in later (after work).

I thought about doing the 5k run/walk at the Pacific Open Water Challenge. I decided since I've done 5k races the past 2 weekends with a bum toe, which is finally starting to feel better (yay!), that I would skip this one.

Hi Manatees! Again, so excited to hear from several of you, in blog or in here, and for those of us racing this weekend, let's use our collective energy and spur each other on, and for those wise ones resting (ahem cough cough BUNNY cough cough ... good to give that toe a rest), thank you so much for the thoughts and cheer!!! When it gets dark, tough, or painful in the race, let's remember ... THE MANATEES ARE HERE!

Do love ... you are a very strong swimmer, and this was an off day. I don't think this is it (more later) but I think it is worth getting checked for Exercise-Induced-Asthma. Come to think of it, on runs sometimes (partic. at beginning then at times of high exertion) I've heard you do that panting/huffing thing ...

Erin awww you're the best. Have fun with the 10K this weekend! Hey can you do me a favor? 'Cause dialup takes 3-4 min to load EACH PAGE, can you look in the old Manatees thread for the mental-training post? There are indices on pages 30 and 35 I think (on some multiple of 5 pages, anyway) so might be easier to look for those first, then the mental training page.

These are some of the thoughts I had on meditative breathing, and I know Suzy had asked about it, and these are, I think, very useful.

YAAAAAAAY SUPER GOOD LUCK SUZY!!!!! All of us are so excited for you. You are going to have a blast, and it really will be an incredible, deep experience perhaps better enjoyed for not having the distractions of too many others around.

Put on your marathon face before hand ... that'll keep you calm and strong going into the swim.

Hey Manatees!!!  I am killing time waiting on a plane in Little Rock.

To all our racers, have a great day!  Do your best and have fun!  Keep smiling and don't take yourself too seriously.  It sounds like Yanti has got that side of things nailed down for her event this weekend!!  Though I don't know if I would be able to pull off a race after spending all that time in the air just days before, you are a rockstar!!!

For those that are resting, recovering or working out, enjoy it!

For me, it will be 10 pm or later before I see my bed and I will be a very tired girl!  I did hold to my hotel mantra of doing something while out today so I am happy with myself for the effort.  I hope to swim or bike tomorrow.

Love ya!!

Good luck to everyone this weekend!  I may do a supported bike ride, but....my mom is going to have the kids for the weekend, so I may opt out of being somewhere at 8 AM and snuggle my hubby instead.  First night with NO kids in a very long time (read: years).

I am off to a fancy dinner in a while!  Wooo!!  See y'all soon.

I'm on it, boss!

Here's a link to Yanti's original post (at the bottom of the page): http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

And because I assume everyone's lazy like me, here's the actual text:

MENTAL TRAINING and WORKOUT JITTERS

You might try some form of meditation before your workouts, and/or make sure you have a good, long, easy (hmm, meditative) warmup (which is always a good idea no matter what) where you focus on the rhythmic repetition of your limbs. Just some tips if you want them (pick 'n' choose, there are a gazillion ways to meditate/focus/whatever):

- Breathe slowly in and out through the nose. Let whatever you want drift through your mind -- just let it float by -- but try to keep always aware of the sensation right at the opening of your nostrils of air flowing in and then back out.

- Alternately, breathe slowly in however you like, but count, and then make your exhales one count longer. Remain aware of the counting.

- Alternately (or in combo w/above), breathe in however you like, breathe out through your mouth with an audible exhale, as if you were fogging a mirror. Breathe air into your nervousness and anyplace in your body you have tension; loosen it up and lift up and away and out through the breathing out. (Breathe peace or strength or whatever you need in; breathe anything you don't want out).

- You can also meditate on an affirmation, like, just one word (calm, peace, joy, power, etc.) or a phrase "I am calm/joyful/etc."

- Your meditation can also actively focus on the workout ... it's great, it's like getting to bike the course before you have to race it, so to speak. Think of where you will go or what you will do; mentally rehearse the workout with confidence; put yourself easily, calmly, and quickly through the workout so that you have 'mastered' it before you even begin.

- Set the meditation to music, or actively listen to music as meditation. Be creative--classical or soothing world music may work. Me, I would get calm and focused listening to Mortal Kombat. But I'm weird.

- Focus on your heartbeat and consciously lower your heart rate. It's fun to do this with a heart rate monitor (proof!) but it's maybe even better just to meditate on the feeling of your heart beating (don't take your pulse; sense your beat with your body and mind) and willing it to slow down. With practice, you'll be astonished to find you can do this voluntarily whether at rest or even training.

Most of this stuff is best practiced when not training, and once you are familiar and comfortable with it and feel it helps you. THEN try some of it DURING training = dynamite. Or low-namite. I find it helpful simply to practice these things at any time of day. Morning works best for me since it sets up my day really well and tends to have a lasting effect. FANTASTIC if you can do this type of training so that on race day, you're calm, cool, collected and can regulate your adrenaline so you evenly and appropriately blow all your energy into the race, not into being nervous before.

Good luck to all of those racing this weekend.  I completed my first Sprint last weekend and it was a blast.  Finished 6th out of 16 in my AG and I even took about 30 sec. off my best training OWS.....(I know you are very proud of that Beth   )  Te group that my Dr. and I put together had 42 racers participate...ALL of them were 1st Timers...Whoo Hoo!  None of them finished DFL in their AG.  I was soooo proud of them.

I have had a hard few weeks lately and training has been my only salvation...at least I have that to fall back on.  Sorry to have been a hermit this month but I started the month with a computer that literally crashed and burned ...it really burned then things just went downhill from there with life in general.  Thanks for the inspires and PM's etc.  I haven't checked the computer much this month but when I have it was GREAT to see some Manatee's checking in on the old guy.

I hope everyone is still racing and training hard and is having a great summer schedule.  I also hope this is just temporary and I will be back to my ol' smarta$$ self very shortly (looks like I am headed in that direction already   )

You guys/gals are the BEST.

 Steve

Outstanding Steve!

and yes I AM very proud of you - see what happens when someone nags, scolds, b!tches, inspires and encourages you??

Seriously you put the work in and it paid off!  It's so hard to focus on the things we don't like to do, but you made it happen

Glad you had a great time in your first tri, sounds like you are now bitten by the bug - when's the next one?

Sorry to hear you've been having such a rough month - I hope it is indeed getting better and we will see more of you around here soon!

take care
