Extreme Veteran 576 | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed Back in the game again for the month. Had a week off following my HIM. it felt so good to be running again. surpriase how much i missed it. went for a 45 min run. No Garmin no HRM just on feel and music loud. Camping in the south of ourstate and ran along the beach in the hard sand, could handle a view like that every day. I may update all my totals when i get home later this week. I left my bike at my sisters house after my Tri and also my goggles. Miss it all!!! |

I'll take it with a grain of salt and move on. Thank God I switched down from the full though, that would have been disastrous... I saw a twitter pic taken in the morning in Houston - looked miserable. Awesome job all you Houston racers! Andy - I admire your ability to do the back to back races - i am convinced you might be a bit crazy! Edited by dangremond 2013-01-14 8:05 AM |

Sick kids and insane work schedule left very little time for anything else last week. Hoping this week will be better. Some better news is that after a couple of treadmill runs I'm having no pain in the ankle anymore, so I'm going to start slowly ramping the mileage back up again in the hopes of getting to where i want to be for a race in April. Daunting task ahead in catching up on 13 pages of the forum to see what you all have been up to!..LOL Glad to hear your ankle appears to be healing. Train smart in prepping for April! Agree that last week was tough. Due to travel and life I didn't get any of my swims in (not happy with myself about that) and had a self induced hangover for about a day - nothing like a tempo run to help burn off the alcohol leftover from a few hours before. Did a lot of cycling and running over weekend that wiped me out. Legs were really dead feeling this morning. Feeling a bit better after resting this morning. I think I had my biggest back to back weeks for swimming and biking (combined) the last two weeks and largest 4 week block ever as well. Thinking of dialing back cycling this week, keep with the running plan, and ensure I hit my swims as scheduled. How much do you guys and gals ice and wear compression gear for recovery? |

Got to be strategic about your workouts with regard to the challenge....but, I know we don't always have 30 minutes, especially at the pool where you have to change, wait for lanes, etc. I feel for you with the swim team comments. A few weeks ago I was at the pool and a young teenager was swimming conitnuous laps in the lane next to me. Like and energizer bunny. Smooth and effortless....unlike me. |

I stopped using ice when I read that heat helps muscles heal faster. Except after my HIM, i took an icebath. the company 110% sells pants that do both. The are comperssion pants that have strategically placed ice pockets. A friend uses them and loved them. |

Expert 819 In the Shadow of the Big House | Subject: RE: Ernesto's group (5th season) - Closed In going thru some old posts I noticed a couple of questions that folks had that never got answered. Here's my 2 cents on them.
Mark asked about Carbohydrates and increased risk of dental decay in the endurance athlete. The sad truth is that, yes, carbs are carbs and the bacteria that cause tooth decay don't care whether the sugar comes from fruit, energy bars, soda or Gu. If you are prone to decay the increase in sugar intake needs to be tempered with very good hygiene and probably an increase in your Fluoride intake as well. The good news is that since most of us are already fairly health conscience, we are probably keeping up in these areas anyway, and we're all following the Maffetone low carb diet, right? Greg asked about hand paddles for swimming. I think hand paddles are great if they are used properly. They are NOT meant for use for your entire workout. They ARE meant for helping with specific training activities such as drills and strength training. You should be able to find examples for the drills if you look online for them. |

I have to move on and analyze though. Probably a good time for me to ramp up running mileage, doing twenty a week is not enough. The day did not cooperate neither, I had very little grip to the floor and the "toeoff" part of the run felt like "skateoff". Very frustrating at times. |
