So I went to my first Masters swim session yesterday evening. And it didn't kill me! Actually, I think it was awesome for me and I'm going to keep going as it fits into my crazy family life. I didn't actually do every bit of the workout - once or twice I hung back to catch my breath and once or twice the coach held me back to give me different instructions. I was in the turtle lane (my word, not theirs) and I was the turtle-ist of all - but the other 4 in my lane were triathletes and one of them was really nice. (The others may be really nice too, but one of the older guys was friendly and kind.)

Too bad I didn't get over this initial fear earlier...hoping I can get to Wednesday's session - it's supposed to have more lanes/less folks per lanes so the coach can give me even more special drills.

Kristen,

Sounds like a good Masters class!

I was 700 yards into my set today fefore the instructor showed up so I just swam my own workout.  Solid effort 2500 yards.

Great Picture.  Queen Zipp (Her Majesty) and Enders_Shadow.  Pretty in Pink for a "luve fest" race!   -- Too bad the race itself was a suck fest!

That is great!  So glad it was a good experience!  I went to a Masters class for a while a couple of years ago.  It helped but I just can't always fit it in and they were all waaaay ahead of me but very nice about it.  Sometimes the drills would get more focused toward IM and preparing for meets, then I would do more of my own thing.  However, in the summer the class also did some OWS because a group of them were preparing for an event to swim across a river.  I really benefited from the OWS sessions!

Mine are feeling better since doing yoga and spinning yesterday.  I might do an easy 1-2 miles to warm up at the gym for strength training later....then again, I might play it safe and wait a few more days.

Traveling for work...again! This time I'm in DC, so lots more opportunities for workouts. Hit the hotel gym this morning for 45 min on a combo of the treadmill and elliptical. Too much cheep/bad beer last night, so performance suffered greatly, but it is in the books and I'm off to learn some new stuff, see some old friends, and start professionalizing my students.Hope everyone has a great day and gets some food training in!

How long are you in DC for?  You're a couple hours north of Kristen and I right now.

Well, I'm ill again. This is getting old now. I'm 7 weeks into the year and I've spent over 4 of them feeling under the weather. It's only a cold, but I woke up this morning feeling incredibly tired and rapidly realised that I felt too ill for my planned run. I did an easy turbo session instead.

I'm going to see the GP on Friday and I'm going to mention this to her. I normally don't really get ill, so I just want to check there's nothing I should be concerned about.

Up till today I was really pleased with how my training is going. Had a great swim last night. I'm starting to worry about my run. It's just not where I really need it to be at this point and its the one that I can't get away with pushing, either when i'm unwell or to make up for lost time. Any thoughts on how to pull my run up to scratch?

Do you have access to an elliptical trainer in a gym?  That at least keeps the legs moving and you wouldn't have to push too hard.

Hope you start feeling better soon!

If you had a run base, it will return quicker than you think once you begin training again.  My advice is if you've been off running for a few weeks, you go back to where you were when you quit.  If you feel you're making progress, you can continue to bump it up.  If you didn't have much of a base, it's a little like starting over.  You will notice a lose in run fitness, but since you have been biking and swimming that will have helped you retain some aerobic capacity.  When injured, I find that my biking really does help me maintain my run fitness better than I would have expected.  Just do the best you can. Stressing about it won't make you feel physically or mentally any better.

2nd masters session in the books. This time I swam the whole way - and it was a bigger session...more people, but also more lanes...so I wasn't even the SLOWEST person in the turtle lane. Wholly cow!

Still pretty tired from the race this past weekend. Hoping to get a run/ride in this afternoon.

Unplanned BRICK today with very happy results.  I'm actually starting to see progress in my conditioning over the past 6 weeks, and that's encouraging.  Comfortable 4 miles/no walking followed immediately by 1000 yard Nonstop swim at near personal best pace.  I'm really please.

Chaps -- get feeling better.  No fun being ill.  You too, Fred. Have fun with your kido's at the meet this weekend!

My body is telling me it wants more recovery after that disaster on Saturday.  Going to be a yoga and easy spin the legs kind of day for me.

Sounds like everyone is getting sick.  I'm finally back to 90-95% but still hacking a bit. My kid got diagnosed with Pneumonia and now I'm at home with him.  He's rallying though...tough kid.  Can't wait for the wife to get home from work so I can get a trainer session in on the bike.  Stay well everyone!

Oh yeah, I saw that.  Made me laugh.  Either the individual has no clue how a race course should be set up or is a flunkie of the RF.  I'm not going to respond to her RR cause I could be banned for asking if she was at the same horrendous race we were at!

Got my hind end out of bed for an early morning run this morning, but the knees were a little twingy...3rd run this week, first twingy day - and I ran hard yesterday...probably my fault for the twinge.

Off to the circus the afternoon. The real one, with elephants and clowns - not a euphemism for work or something of the like.
