Timed 5k effort followed by functional training for me yesterday, it was a good effort after a long day travelling.

Lisa and Kate, good to hear back from the two of you!  Kate, are you having problems uploading workouts into BT from a Garmin 910XT by any chance? That is a known problem that they have not fixed yet.  I have to upload my workouts into Garmin Connect and then export a .TCX file into BT to have the workout show up in BT.

I'm adding a recovery 1hr drainer yesterday and a 4000m swim today

Finished up last month with 65 minute run late on Sunday.

I took Labor Day off and did a small amount of swimming in my in-laws pool. 40 minutes on the drainer yesterday morning. 35 minute run this morning with a nice speed segment. That run gave me a good dose of confidence.

Officially registered for Saturday's HIM. Looks like clear skies and 60F degrees. Jim - my friend Chris and I are staying at the AmericInn up the road in Oscoda. We're working on logistics now. We'll probably leave our neck of the woods mid-afternoon on Friday. Should take us about 2.5 hours to get there. I'm looking forward to meeting you face to face.

Jim - sent you a message - check your BT inbox.

Mitch-I'm very excited you are coming up! It is a good course for your first HIM. The wind is going to be out of NNW 5-7 mph. The water should be calm. The bay is still in the 70's, so the swim should be good. You will see the swim course when you get into town and you are passing Walmart.
The bike course is a nice ride out into the national forest. You can break it into 4 legs. The first leg is from Tawas to the monument. It will be a grind, head wind and it is either up hill or a false flats. The first hill is a heart breaker. 3 tiers, but you don't see the next tier until you are near the crest of the section you are on. Steady and strong is the key.
The second leg is the monument to the Dam Store in Oscoda. Be Aggressive, it is almost all down hill. Every up hill section is proceeded by a downhill. Just before the turn is the Old Orchard hill. The steepest one on the course. Take it as hard as you feel safe.
The third is Oscoda to Cooke dam. Back up the old orchard hill. stay steady. This includes 3 miles down to the dam. The road has several curves, so you can't take full advantage of the down hill. Back up out of the dam is a grind.
The last leg is when you get out of the dam. This is the last 17 miles. ATTACK THE COURSE!. It is all down hill and fast, the wind will be at your back and you can fly.
The run is a flat out and back two times to the airport. Not an exciting run. It goes out of town and through a swampy, sandy area. The finish is downtown on Newman Street. It is a fun finish. A lot of people, its close and exciting. I predict you do it in 5:30+or- 10 mnutes

There is construction on US 23 between Tawas and Oscoda, you can't avoid it. It will take you about 25 minutes to go from your hotel to the start. Also, if you get off of I-75 North of Bay City and take 13 to Tawas, you will miss the construction on 75 by Pinconning.

I started this month off with spending Labor Day competing in my second sprint triathlon. I improved in my age group (19 of 56) but still have lots of room for improvement overall. The Production company was hosting a Olympic and a sprint so my swim wave didn't get wet until 8:30 and it was already 90 degrees by then. Needleless to say my bike and run were a little slower then I would have liked but I still enjoyed the event even though it was STUPID HOT!!

It saddens me to say that someone passed away during the Towe Lake Triathlon this past weekend. We saw an ambulance rush into the parking lot while taking in some post race fluids, just before the finish line, but we didn't think much of it at the time. We later found out a 37 year old male competing in the Oly succumbed to heat exhaustion and passed away at the hospital. Very tragic and its been on my mind all week, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Mitch, I'm excited for you that you will be doing your 1st HIM this weekend and on top of that, you will get to hang out with the Mayor of Tawas, our very own Jim! Remember to trust your training and to enjoy every possible moment!

Dennis, congrats on your tri race improvement, even on a really tough day.  That is really sad news whenever we loose someone from the tri community.

Dennis, you are a smart man taking your wife's Birthday off.  I learned the hard way this year when I wanted to take the family to a far away half marathon race for my wife's birthday weekend.  I'm still paying for that one....

Adding 1hr drainer yesterday and an 8 mile run w/ 6 mile tempo today

X2!

Congratulations Dennis! Sounds like you enjoyed it in spite of the weather and hopefully got hooked .
Good luck on the weekend Mitch! We will be waiting for the story. There's nothing like the first HIM or IM!!!

2 days and no points...
Thursday - work, work, work.
Today - 1hr on the kayak so it doesn't count, but it felt great. Water seems to be more relaxing for me than riding in traffic.
Tomorrow - drive to Brisbane to run/race the 5k Parkrun along the river.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
