Weekly check in time. I only got 4/6 this week, but it was a race week for me so, I was tapering a little. I did get my injury prevention time in as I used the hot tub to massage my plantar fasciitis and sat in an ice bath for 20 minutes after my race today. And speaking of that race, it went ok, not great, but really enjoyed running with a good friend the whole way.

My race report is here: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid...

I love the way the jersey is shaping up. There are some seriously talented people in this group. Can't wait to suit up on a group ride sporting y'alls work.

I do like Gretchen's suggestion of upping your weak sport workout by 1.

Nice job! Even if it's not as good as you hoped, a half marathon is no joke.

Did a 6 miles tempo run today. I was a little nervous bc my calves/ shins have really been bothering me, but they were mostly fine on the run today. I did warm up well and was very conscious of my posture. I have my long run tomorrow (9 miles, it's a step-back week) and I'm hoping they still feel OK. I always stretch well but I have started using the Tiger Tail thingie and I think that must help.
It was so nice to have another run this week in 45*! Just tights and a tech tee and baseball cap- no jackets, wool hat, face cover, etc. I know it's the last warm weather for a while but it gives me hope- in a month or so my outdoor runs will all be pleasant! The trails were also clear which made the run a lot easier.

Chris,
I would think the Mdot might encroach upon trademark licensing type stuff.

I would rather not have the Mdot. I haven't earned one of those yet.

I understand, I was just coming from the perspective that the character personified the things we desire in triathlon and earning an M-dot is one of the things most of use would like to achieve. Someone had mentioned adding Kona to the design, which is kind of the same thing.

Today was a rest day for me (of course it was 60 outside today after I ran 12 miles when it was 19 on Friday). Including the the preventive maintenance workout yesterday I ended the week with 10 workouts. Pretty tired today, but my run volume won't be this high again between now and the end of the month so I feel good about it. Hope everyone had a great weekend!!

Name: Anne

Story: Last July while picking up my 8 year old daughters race packet for a kiddie tri, I had an overwhelming desire to sign up for the adult super sprint. I talked myself out of it because I had not done any exercise in about a year, and weighed in at 220 and am only 5'4". Instead I found a race the next week that i knew i could walk the run leg, and knew i could cycle. I went to the pool that night and decided if i didnt drown swimming the distance for the race leg, i would sign up. I didnt drown.

Family Status:
Married with two daughters (9 & 7) and a 17 yo son from previous marriage.

Current Training:
Run focused over the winter. Spin classes for winter cycling...not much swimming since last season ended.
In March I start back with masters 2x a week. As weather warms Iwill cycle more as the world around me cycles.

2014 races:
A couple of 5ks and 2 local super sprint triathlons and 1 small duathlon.

2015 races:
Many. We have lots of local super sprints and sprints that I plan on using for training. I also have 2 century bike rides scheduled. I kick off the season with a half marathon march 14th., cherry blossom 10 miler in april, and the lincoln half marathon in may. My first season culminates with the Miami 70.3 in October.

Beer Preference:
Ok..my husband is master brewer and we are part owners of a microbrewery....that being said i have a rather wide palate and enjoy most beers . Currently my favorite is an IPA that has some neat tropical overtones.

Weight loss:
Remember i said that i started this at 220? I have only weighed myself once since then...around october, and had lost 30 pounds. While i need to lose significant weight, my goal is to improve times and endurance and feel good. I will weigh in again at the end of march as that is my self determined start of my season. Someday i would like to see 135 again...till then i just keep training and eating what works.

So, for example, my weakest sport is the run and I only managed to get in two short runs last week. This week, I'm challenging myself to up that to three, even if I have to sacrifice a workout in another sport to do it.

Dang it! I did that this week with an extra swim workout... maybe I can figure out how to get in 5 swims this week...

Great idea on the M-dot. +1 for me.

We should check on the copyright stuff but I don't see it as a problem since thousands of people get it on a tattoo every year with no issues. I have a few friends that are lawyers that I'm sure would check into that for us if it's a direction we want to go.

Well check in time for me. The workouts are going well but I have put on 10 pounds, back up to 180.2, in the past few months that I'm very unhappy about. Even with the training I still am packing it on. Not sure where it went because my pants still fit the same. I guess if I wasn't eating everything in sight it wouldn't have happened. Time to get strict and serious again with my logging.

DQ and I were doing a type of accountability on an app called lose it. It's a food log. It worked great and I lost a ton of weight. I now like to use my fitness pal since it is synced with Garmin Connect which imports my calorie burn so it's more accurate.

For those that are interested my name on my fitness pal is alexkish or you can add me by email [email protected].

The added accountability of logging your food and having friends follow to keep you honest and engaged really helped me. To keep it simple....it just works. Get on board and go for it.

The only thing you have to lose is weight......

Use of a logo on apparel is governed by licensing and is a no-no. There's an argument for fair-use, since use as to a tattoo on a caricature does not imply any level of endorsement, and the level of use is so low that it'll probably escape notice. Legally, I would advise as to not use the logo.

Personally, I also disagree with it - and I have a Moo-dot tattooed on my calf.

I'll get on my soapbox for a moment - and I don't have a lot of room to talk here without being something of a hypocrite (with two IM-branded races and well over $1,000 in race fees paid alone, and likely at least two more coming up) - but I really don't like how much WTC's Ironman has become the defacto name for triathlon, especially among triathletes, who should all know better. I love Ironman Wisconsin, and I'll probably drive up there several times to ride the course with friends this summer - but when it comes to race quality, I preferred Rev3 and I hope Challenge keeps the standard.

Check-in at IM Racine involved four hours of standing in line, basically to sign a waiver that I had already agreed-to online; IMWI was almost as bad. The post-race food was medicore. Sure, the crowds make you feel something akin to god-hood, but the race-system itself could be made so much more efficient. There is no logical reason it should take that long to do anything, and it has to be a choice by the organization. Quassy and Dells both took me less than 10 minutes to check-in for.

That being said, unfortunately, if I do run a full-distance race this year, it will be an IM-branded race, because 11 more qualify me for a legacy slot and a trip to Kona.

Clipless pedals are a game-changer.

The first time you ride outside, you will fall. Buy a set of knee pads and wear some gloves. It took 18 months for the knee scrapes to fade for me - getting old means we heal really slow for scrapped knees. Find a big, open parking lot, and ride in circles at a medium-slow pace, and just practice clipping out - like 50 or 75 times per side, all while pedaling in a circle. It's not hard, but it is a learned-skill.

Also, bike shoes are so much nicer because the soles are so stiff that they transmit power smoothly, without the insoles absorbing it.

Alright, now I feel caught up! I think the jerseys look great. Part of me likes the simplicity of the original logo that DQ made, but having this guy on our shirts would definitely be different.
I would also be interested in a tri top if that is the way people are going.

My weekend was filled with workouts. I'm actually feeling pretty tired because of it. Friday night I had a swim lesson, so I swam some laps before. My calves have been tight lately (I think from dehydration, although I drank a lot of water on Friday). I turned weird or something at one point and thought I tore a muscle in the side of my calf. It was like a giant knot that wouldn't go away. I had to get out, and after a few minutes of walking I was able to loosen it up.
The next morning I went to a boot camp. I take a medication that causes dizziness, but I mainly notice it when I'm going from low to high (such as from pushups to jumping jacks). This boot camp had a lot of that, so I was a bit dizzy for a lot of it and had to keep taking breaks. Hopefully it is something that I adjust to over time.
Yesterday I did a step class and bodyflow for my recovery/injury prevention. That left me at 7/6 for the week! My muscles are extremely sore, but in such a good way. Volleyball tonight will be interesting...

My weight loss is going well so far. I am down 3 lbs from last week and feeling pretty good. I have upped my goal on the spreadsheet to 8 because I think it is achievable.

Happy Monday!

I like the jersey/tri top as well. Your brother in law is very talented.

Dave- the motivation will come back (at least that is what I am telling myself right now).

Chris- nice race report

shack- sorry to hear about the foot

Anne- welcome

Nicole- you are killing the workouts.

My little wing is still on the mend. I have a follow up appointment today so hopefully the stitches come out. I also start back to light duty at work answering phones. I better be able to workout soon so that I can keep my sanity. My brother backed out of the HIM this year so I am back to training alone when I get back to it.

Welcome!

Lincoln Half Marathon in May..... Lincoln, NE? I assume there is more than one "Lincoln Half in May", but I searched and didn't see one.

Part owners of a brewery. COOL! What brewery? Website?
This is actually my "dream job". My wife is all for it, and I have been making plans for it the last couple years, but it will be a few more years before I attempt to make it a reality for several reasons. (not to bore everyone, but...) 1) Kids. Gotta get them in school full time first. 2) Current beer scene. I want to see how the craft beer craze shakes out for another few years. 3) Money. I'm not risking my kids future on my love of beer.

47/400--1250yd swim this morning

Yesterday was my rest day and I nearly went crazy--like, really, really crazy. It has been a while since that happened. I'm both encouraged by it and worried that I'm not well adjusted. Of course, then I think, "I'm a triathlete, of course I'm not well adjusted.". HA!

Ryan and Scott - sending along wishes for speedy recoveries for both of ya (Scott hope those stitches are out).

Charles - AWESOME on the moo dot!! HA! And thanks for the encouragement on the pedals. I'm hoping to get as much practice as I can on the clipping in/out over the winter on the Y's spin bikes. I got my left foot in with no issue and spent more than 5 minutes trying to get my right, solely because I was trying to clip the toe end of the cleat into the back of the heel end of the clip - overandoverandoverandoverandover...... The spin bike uses the little SPD cleats though, and I'm wondering if clipping in is easier with the Keo-style, since they're so much bigger.

Christina, Nicole, Gretchen, - you guys are killing it out there!

Anne - welcome! And yeah - share details on the brewery, you're talking to a bunch of beer nerds here!

I finished my 6/6 yesterday with 1hr spin. I was completely spent after that though with all of the workouts leading up to it, and am still sore in all sorts of spots. Mostly from the one armed rows on the TRX.

For this week's challenge, I am going to have to either modify or bow out. The snow has, for the 3rd Monday in a row, cancelled my swim class and closed the Y. Adding in the MLK holiday the week before the snowstorms started and I've had exactly three swims in 4 weeks. This week was supposed to have swims today and Friday, which would have been an increase.... I have been slacking in my cycling big time and so I'm going to attempt to increase from one to three bike related workouts this week, even though my swim is still probably my weakest event.

This winter thing is just crazy this year. We've had higher snow totals for the winter before, but not all in a 3 week span. IT JUST WON'T STOP SNOWING.... And again Canada is laughing at us

I actually like SPD cleats - they are a bit easier to use than Look-style cleats and are double-sided, which means it's easier to clip in - you just push down and go. I don't even think about it any more, and even if you miss, it'll work itself in after a few pedal strokes. I like to think "heel" when clipping out

Look-style cleats are a bit awkward because they are only one-sided; you sorta have to nose into them a bit. I would run a set of speedplays, but I got too good a deal on my Garmin Vectors to switch.

Hi all,

It's been about a month....sorry for dropping off the face of the earth. Unfortunately after my last post, things went from bad to worse to pretty horrid. The uveitis was determined to be caused by a virus...basically, think herpes/cold sore/shingles, if you've ever had the chicken pox virus you can get shingles/cold sore/etc....in this case, the virus emerged through my optic nerve and essentially destroyed the retina in my left eye. We've been in a month long fight to save what very, very little vision remains. The virus was incredibly aggressive in my case, and I've been on a regimen of incredibly high levels of oral antivirals and antiviral injections in my eye every three days. A common result of this is retinal detachment as the retina is so degraded it basically starts fraying away from the eye, and about ten days ago it became apparent my retina was indeed starting to go, so I had surgery last week to attempt to save what little retina they could. I've basically been grounded for four weeks...slow walking is all I've been permitted. And let me tell you, it's not going over well. I haven't been this inactive in years.

Next meeting with the surgeon is tomorrow, when I'll get some idea as to a recovery schedule, activity wise. I'm determined to maintain my goals and start up a recovery program and exercise schedule as soon as I possibly can. Fortunately, my right eye has thus far been unaffected, so I should be able to eventually return to a fairly normal, if different, life.

Realistically, the physical recovery may be the easiest part. I'm going from being a fully sighted person to a mono-sighted one, and there will be a whole barrel of challenges that go along with this. But I will be building a full recovery program into the next year. Starting up and maintaining my tri training feels like a critical part of the psychological recovery for me.

One question I think the group may be able to assist with...I've basically been scared into ALWAYS wearing protective eyewear. Since I only have one remaining sighted eye, the motto is to preserve it at all costs. This means protective glasses for cycling and running...something I've never bothered with before and honestly....I freaking hate protective eyewear, even sunglasses, so this is something I am going to have to seriously have to work on and research. I know many athletes use these....recommendations? I'll want something comfortable to exercise in, comfortable to sweat in, etc. etc. I may need multiple different options, so please feel free to chime in with what you like and why.

Hope to catch up with all of you!

Sorry to hear about your issues. The more and more I hear about friends and family who have had shingles, the more I want to go out and get the innoculation now even though they say it's not needed till I'm 50.

As for the eyewear, I saw these at Lowes and always thought these were kinda cool looking. I bet you could go running in these and no one would notice. The added bonus is that you can use the miter saw after your workout without changing glasses.

If you don't want tinting then they do have clear.
