Adding yesterday's 47' treadmill run. Jacked the incline to 3.5% for the last couple of miles. Ran it at MAF so I was going slow.

Final weekend of swim meets for the winter. These things take so long, but it's great to watch the kids improve so dramatically. My girls now kick my all over the pool - and they are swimming all strokes against my sloppy freestyle. Wish I learned to swim as a kid.

It's amazing how efficient a swimmer is when they has been trained to swim correctly at a young age, and it is a skill they will carry with them their entire life. My daughters have not swum competitively since my oldest daughter (a sophomore at Michigan State) was in 5th grade. All three of them can still crush me at will in the water.

So true. My littlest one just turned 5 and has been in lessons for a couple years. She already swims freestyle, breast stroke, back stroke and is beginning to learn the butterfly. I keep telling my older girls who never embraced swimming that by summer she will be beating them both in the pool. They don't believe me, but my money is in the 5 year old.

So very true. I signed my son up for summer swim when he was 7 to help condition him for football in the fall. 10 years later much to my surprise he turned out to be a better swimmer then football player. I have to admit it did hurt a little when he entered high school and he had to choose between football and swimming and he chose swimming. It was the right choice, he swam on varsity as a freshmen and earned his lettermen the day this photo was taken. My point here is that didn't he get his swim abilities from my genetic base. I mean don't I have the ability to swim a :46 100m since he got his athletic abilities from me. Am I reaching?

200m Freestyle Relay District Champs. My son is on the far right.

I totally agree with everyone's comments about swimming from a young age. A tiny part of me is a tiny bit upset that my mother didn't force me past the "guppy" stage at the YMCA when I took swimming lessons. Definitely making up for that now

7 miles with the triathlon group today in 56:30. Ran with a partner that really pushed the pace... before our cool down we were averaging 7:40 per mile, which is definitely not what I would run if I just hit the streets to cover the miles solo. Felt great -- hopefully my legs will still feel okay tomorrow morning!

Did my usual parkrun this morning. My husband has been adjusting his training when he can so that he can have the baby and let me run, so over the last month or so Ive been gradually decreasing the walk intervals. Today was my first attempt at running the full 5km with no breaks. I pushed it fairly hard and was fairly wrecked at the end. I mostly managed negative splits for each km, except that I slowed a little on km 4 until I got my second wind. Overall I was really pleased with my time of 31:00. It's still a ways to go before I get to my previous PB of 25:55, but a major improvement on the 38min I did just over a month ago. Next target is to get under 30 minutes, although when that happens I'll have to add a lap or two of the track to cool down in order to earn my point! I'm starting to see glimmers of my previous self in my training, although clearly the volume isn't there. But it's just nice to feel like it hasn't vanished forever :-)

Adding Monday's ride back to the list, along with Thursday and Friday. Thursday was a day I added to the program to bridge what felt like a big gap in time, so I should be able to move forward now.

  • See if this makes sense. You have to be able to handle the distance before you can handle the distance fast. Therefore, go as slow as you need to ensure you can last for 17 hours (in case you need to). After you know you can last the 17 hours, then work on getting faster. ;-)

So this cramping thing you're having is really bugging me. When I first started, I used to cramp all the time while swimming. Someone told me to quit pointing my toes. I did, and the cramping reduced but didn't go away completely. Now, after swimming a lot more, I hardly ever cramp. When I do, it's because my sodium levels are too low.

I cramped on a really hilly run a few weeks ago. I went back and looked, and my sodium levels were too low. It started at mile 16 on an 18.7 mile run and it was miserable.

Do you keep track of your sodium in your nutrition bottles? If so, can you share it?

Also, do you do any flexibility/stretching type things like yoga?

The cramping has me really puzzled as well and really frustrated.

Friday/Saturday End of Tour Of Sufferlandria which had 5+ hours all at close to FTP (brutal but no pain at the time)
    Sunday - Off (no pain)
Monday - 5k run cramping most of the run and ended with me more or less howling in pain due to quad cramping.
Tuesday - Very light bike - made it 5min before brutal quad cramps return
Wednesday - 1hr massage all on legs. I was told my quads were exceptionally tight
Thursday - Tried the bike again - made it 5 min
Friday - Swam which is quad intensive but minimized with pull buoy, also sat in hot tub but cramping returned
Saturday - Bike 10min cramping still but less severe now. Also went snowboarding for 3hrs - No cramping at all

Stretching - I am bad, I dont often stretch but have been these past few days. I normally finish a work out with a good cool down either brisk walking after a run or light pedalling after the bike. No yoga
Fluids - lots of water daily, no alcohol. I very rarely drink gatorade or other sport drink
Sodium - I dont track it but unfortunately find I eat more processed foods than I would like too - I cant be certain but I wouldnt think my sodium is low. I dont crave salt.

At this point I am keeping the muscle moving and stretching through out the day

For a bit now I've been a part of an indoor bike challenge that meets every other Sunday at 7 am, and right after it my tri group does an hour ride at the same place. Today I did both workouts for the first time. IT WAS HARD! I'm not used to being on the bike for more than an hour, which I know is something that I need to get used to. In the end, I was going at it for 2:20:30. Legs feel a bit like jello! Also adding in my workout from yesterday -- I posted it but it looks like it fell off in the updates at some point.

40 minutes on the turbo today. Pyramid set. I think I may have gone a little harder than I had planned. Jackie - yes I had a baby, and yes it has a huge impact. And I keep forgetting to take that into account when planning my sessions. But I could just about walk when I got off the bike, so it couldn't have been too bad, right?

We were going to fit a swim in today, taking the baby to the pool and taking turns lap swimming while the other had the baby. We got all the way down there and then realised that we'd forgotten the baby's swimming stuff with the number of bags we had to take out with us. And we didn't have time to go and get it before the pool closed. So we got back in the car and drove home... I'm hoping to fit a swim in at some point in the week, but it's kind of tricky to figure out babysitters for swimming.

    Okay, humor me.

Go buy a tub of Ultragen (Tropical Punch flavor is the best). Take two scoops in 12 fl oz of water immediately and also, take it after every reasonably hard workout. Do no hard workouts for at least 3 days. That's the recovery part.

Figure out what electrolyte stuff you want to use. I use Skratch labs right now for electrolytes and Carbo Pro for calories, so I don't use gels at all. In my opinion, you need to start supplementing. I think your electrolyte balance is way off and that, combined with hard workouts, is causing your cramping.

Anyone else want to chime in?

Dave, maybe your body needs a low-activity week (e.g., walking or short and slow runs) to fully recover from whatever is causing all the cramping. Get some ice going and advil going if you haven't already, and continue with a couple deep massages to work out the muscles.

I had to take off the weekend from training - wife had the flu so spent 100% of my time looking after my girls (which was great).

30 minutes easy on the bike and strength workout following. Trying to get pysched up for an FTP test tomorrow morning. I have zip desire to do it. But want to start a new training block on the bike and the first workout in the block, appropriately, is an FTP test.

Training is often a lonely proposition and sometimes we are our own worst enemies. Finding good training partners can provide you with that extra external motivation to bring out your best.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
