MrsUSMC - 2008-01-22 6:47 PM Oooo! Pretty bike! Beth I'm so glad to hear your wralking so well. You give me hope. I haven't been posting anything because all I feel like I do is whine. I'm in so much pain right now, that I was in tears on the way home from the gym tonight. I have a dr. appt. tomorrow but mentally I've been at the "why bother" stage for about 2 weeks. It's a mental drain fighting that and I'm trying really hard to stay upbeat. I am reading everything you're all posting, I just haven't had anything to contribute.

Terri love, injuries and whining thereof are as critical a part of training as swimming, biking, running. By spilling it and sharing your struggle, you're contributing as much to our team--and to your own tri journey--as if you were posting about a race. And you are absolutely doing the right thing by going to the doctor.

Every word I say is one I've either had to swallow these last few weeks, and/or continue to.

Each one of us will--and probably once each training cycle/year, just on statistics--incur some kind of injury, illness, repair, etc. How we handle it, and help each other through, is as much a part of being a great athlete as any workout. Often I see injury as an aberration from the path, or as something "wrong with me." As frustrating and painful as they are, it's often the case that our bodies are giving us a necessary chance to do things differently. We can also give ourselves the chance to develop other critical training skills.

x2. Terri, I totally get needing to just disappear sometimes, or lurk on the edges, but know that we're all 100 percent behind you and you should feel free to whine (and rant and cry and whatever) all you want to us. Injuries suck, so much, and we're here to help you get through this frustrating time.

Leslie: Love the hot water/moonshine concoction, but that sock thing? Freezing water? Wet socks? I'm sure it's great, but no thanks. Heh.

Yanti: Thank you for the cadence drills! I'm looking forward to experimenting with them. One question: Can I do the drills on the bikes folks use for spin classes? I can think of only one place where I've got a nice, flat straight-away that would work for practicing drills on my bike, but it's really boring and I try not to bike there very often.

Of course! Other than a trainer, an indoor cycling bike is the best place to practice pedal stroke drills--none of that silly road stuff to worry about. Stationaries are okay, too, but not great.

Excellent. Heh, I was kind of at a loss trying to figure out how I'd find a good place to practice on the road. This is good -- it'll make my indoor cycling a lot more interesting. Now if I could just get a bigger apartment so I could fit a trainer...

Thanks, Yanti!

Two pieces of good news:

#1:  I went to the dr. yesterday and I feel 200% better.

#2:  I BOUGHT MY BIKE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    I am beyond excited!!  I have been looking forever for a entry-level road bike that I could be happy with.  I bought a KHS Flite 300.  I attached a picture at the bottom of the page.

Here are the stats:

Frame

It's going to be great.  It's all black (like the photo) and I added red pedals and water bottle cages.  I'm a huge Georgia fan, so I think it's pretty badass.  I go for a specialized triathlon fitting this weekend.

So what's everyone up to today? I've got a one-hour bike -- I'm hoping to make it to a spin class, but since I got to work a little late today I doubt I'll be able to leave early enough to make it to the class. Which means a stationary for me, but at least I'll be able to try out some of Yanti's drills!

Hey Erin!

That sounds good (well, other than being stuck at work!), definately sounds like a good chance to practice the drills!

I can't make up my mind today . . . I didn't get up this AM, which really screws up my time.  I am supposed to do a short swim and a 40 min run BUT I really want to go to a couple classes tonight   I'm in weight-loss mode and those classes usually do wonders for me (2#'s to go by Sat to hit my 6-week goal, wouldn't have been a problem if I had been eating better!)  Plus my "official" training plan starts Monday, so I'm hoping to follow it a little more closely then.  I have some funny workouts scheduled this week . . . tonight's run, if I'm understanding it right, calls for HOPPING on one foot - NOT gonna happen on the TM! LOL!  Tomorrow's swim is like 10 miles!  Ok, well it might as well be!  I think it is over 5000 yards!!  I've got my "stroke improvement" class though & think I will stick to that.  My current plan was a swim intensive winter maintenace plan and I can't wait for it to be over!!  Just frustrated with swimming right now I guess . . . sorry, I'm really rambling here   I think I will still try to fit my run in tonight and skip my swim . . . plus do a class and a circuit class.  Sorry you asked? haha

Renee--that is a LOT of exercise!  Congrats on being so close to your weight goal!  My scale is finally starting to go back down, but I am still about 7 pounds above my 'happy weight' from this summer, and would like to lose beyond that this season....but still, any loss is a good one.  The pants are a little less tight this week, phew!  The problem with purging the fat clothes is that if you get a little fluffy, the pants show it and there are no options!

Erin, sounds like a good plan for the bike. I am going to go swimming in a while after I drop my oldest at school, and then if timing works I may hit a spin class but the odds aren't good for that, so swimming is fine.  My current  plan is ending which means it is prepping me for a (nonexistent) race and the workouts are strange now, so I am just going to keep at what I can do and get myself ready to start the Oly plan in the next couple of weeks.

And yes, the sock thing.....wet socks.....it works, really it does!!!!!

Renee: 5,000 yards! That is INSANE. Heh. I have totally faith in you, though. You are a training monster.

Leslie: I do trust you on the socks, it just sounds so unpleasant. It doesn't help that last night it was so cold in my apartment that I could actually see my breath.

Thank you all for your *permission* to whine. I felt really guilty about that last post, but your responses have cheered me somewhat.

I went to the dr. today. She told me to stretch, ice, and gave me a prescription for Naproxen (sp?) to take 2x daily. And she gave me a referral to a podiatrist of my choice (that my TriCare will accept). So, I've put a message out on my local tri-club site hoping someone will give me the name of a podiatrist to help me get back on the road to training for my 1st tri. The doc also said she'd much rather see me swimming and biking than running because of my weight, but since I've stopped running/walking I've stopped losing weight and that's depressing me more than the injury itself, and I told her so. So now I have to wait for the referral to get to me (about a week) and to find the name of a "triathlon" podiatrist.

A referral to a podiatrist...that's progress. And hey, two out of three sports isn't bad -- at the very least, you'll be able to keep up a base level of fitness. (I know, it's still frustrating as hell, but I'm trying to be supportive.) Maybe you can use this time to really focus on improving your bike and/or swim.

Got my swim in and it felt pretty good actually. I did 500 m going 200 front 200 back then 100 front. So my distance on my front is increasing so I am happy with that.

I totally forgot to tell everyone. Yesterday on the radio I won 2 tickets to the opening night on Cirque du Soleil Saltimbanco when it comes here to Victoria. Website says the tickets go for $250 each but will see when they actaully go on sale on Saturday. Still stoked that I won tickets. If it sells out fast I may be tempted to sell them and get more gear!!!

Wow! Congrats on the big win! I love winning stuff, totally fun!  CDS is fun if you haven't seen it before, or even if you have.  I say you make it a night out with your lady!  (Although nobody on here would fault you for selling it off for gear!)...

Wow just on a lucky streak here. I bought a cycling jersey off of ebay on a second chance offer. I had emailed the seller to verify it was a legit offer and also asked if I could get the jersey in Blue not red. he said fine and to just put it in the notes section when I made the payment. So I did that and so 16 days later I receive the package and it is Red. So I email him and include all my previous emails and the receipt from paypal and he just got back to me. He is going to ship the new blue one tomorrow and I get to keep the red!!

or seel them on ebay or craigslist for some cold hard cash and score some great gear. a true quandry, but a good one to have.

Man, I want some of Shawn's luck! and enthusiasm! and skill! Shoot, guess I'm gonna have to do it like he did and make my own

Although I'm much, much, better, I'm still really fatigued. It's taking a lot of effort just to do my daily stuff, never mind throw a workout in on top of it. I keep forgetting that two whopping simultaneous illnesses can take a while to come back from.

And that goes for the rest of you, too ... be good to yourselves through the rest of January!
