Hey Jo, can you get a water proof strapping to wear during your race if your wrist isn't better? Or take some extra time in T1 and strap it for the ride because all that time on the bike might make it extremely sore if it doesn't have any support. If I remember correctly you don't have aero bars do you?

Sleeves.   With a proper fit and knowing just how to set the sleeves on the arm one does not loose any mobility that a sleeveless reportable does.    I have had sleeveless wetsuits at one time but don't have any use for them in the various aquatic activities I do.

YMMV.

What size are you looking at? I am going to be selling my long sleeve one soon. It is an Xterra size L. I will not be able to use it for awhile so I am going to sell it. I wore it 2X's, it has no tears or rips. I bought it last year for a tri in Alaska.

Hi Jonathan, glad to see your back and your move went ok. How is your puppy coping with it all?

Pikatti is doing well. He has a fenced in yard here, so adjusting well. We have started to do some runs, but nothing substantial yet. I will post a pic in the next few days of him, he has grown a lot.

Race minus 6 days - wrist sore and pretty immobile dammit.  Bruising yes, a little swelling yes.  Could i swim or ride today - no.  Sunday is 6 days away.....so if it improves every day then it's possible.  If I swam and someone bashed it i would cry and maybe drown....lucky did lots of one armed drills with Johnny on Saturday - 1km worth.

I am probably going to have to bite the bullet and go the xray.  Also I think IM may grant me a wetsuit stripper coz right now i can't even get my undies down effectively!  so will need a doc report thing i'm sure.  i got two friends i know who are up there spectating so could do the wetsuit strip.

I would then have to wear a camelpak for the ride coz i can't maneouver well enough to get a drink bottle out of the cage.

I am working towards doing this race.  watch this space.  Oh i bruise easily....

My sizing for Xterra is a small.  Bummer, we got close to a win win there.

One or the other? Sleeves.

Then look for a good deal on last seasons sleeveless until you find one for less than $150, then buy it too

Hahaha.  What would you say are your preferred scenarios for either?

Also, picking up a used wetsuit would be fine to do, right?

Well in my whole ONE season of tris...

It's not so much my own experience with this as it is that I have posed this question on a couple of different boards and arrived at this answer.  If a race is wetsuit legal look at the wetsuits the pros are wearing--almost always long sleeved.  Does that mean it's right for the average AGer, maybe maybe not, but sleeves = faster in the water.  When the temps are warm, that extra suit can make you feel kind hot (especially for longer races/slower swimmers), and the sleeves add some time to getting it off.  I only had one race this year I would have really liked a sleeveless, and my full was fine, but if I get a chance to pick one up on the cheap, I probably will.

Used wetsuits are no problem.  I ordered one at the beginning of the season and it was back-ordered all summer.  The company sent me a rental to use until mine was ready.  It worked just fine.

FWIW, I don't feel noticeable fatigue in my shoulders from the suit.  All I seem to think about with it on, is how much effing better my position is in the water, and how I should really be practicing more so it feels like that all the time

Jo get some arnica cream and slather on that baby a few times a day. It is supposed to help draw out the bruising, it will be yellow in no time.

What do you mean by how to set up the sleeves properly?  What would you say is the detractor for sleeveless?

Sleeves are faster if you can find the right size and get it on ok. I *think* most have to pull the sleeves up farther than they think. The sleeve ends don't necessarily sit at your wrists, you need the range of motion for your shoulders so the they end where they end. Mine end up ~1/3-1/2 way up my forearm. There isn't really a detraction on sleeveless so much as they don't help quite as much as a good fitting sleeved suit. The extra material is a little more float and widens the paddle of the forearm, so to speak.

I've still been using my sleeveless more often because I haven't quite figured out the sleeves. Haven't been swimming in it enough, so was kind of lost on the feel at a race before. But when the water is ~58F, you cover up. The water temps have also been legal but on the warmer side for the others though, so overheating has been a concern. For me, the sleeves are a lot warmer, but not everyone has that.

I see one downside to buying a used wetsuit - wearing something that someone else has peed in. . That is pretty much all I can contribute to the wetsuit discussion. Oh, one other thing, desoto is having a sale on its wetsuits.

Thinking/writing about IMNZ still draws me into grief (though surprisingly, I've progressed pretty far on it. The report, and the grief).

Thinking about IMJ still brings on a fresh wave of nausea.

So no RRs quite yet. Soon.

85km of chip seal with a broken rib, arthritis and 2 gears ... that's all I really need to write for my IMNZ report, come to think of it ... but there were piglets and fish and bunny-loving Rottweilers, too.

Catch up post.  Sorry if I missed you, it wasn't intentional!

Jen, I'm glad that the phone interview went so well.  We'll keep on sending the job zen your way!

Randee - How long it takes to adjust depends on how far you are racing.  The longer the race, the more time I'd allow for adjustment.

Ben - I can only list races that you put in your training log.  No races in training log = no races on Racing Manatees list!  Great swim and ride this weekend!

Yanti - Love your  leprechaun photo!  I do hope that you are feeling better more yourself.  And if you want to be added to the DL, I can.  I just thought that you didn't want to be on there?  Or maybe I'm just confused because some others have requested to not be listed.  But seriously, who wouldn't want good thoughts and healing zen and tail flaps and…  OK, you're on it.

Felicia - Sorry about the half marathon on the 22nd.  At least Horsethief Canyon is still a go!  Pretty shoes too!  And you're not old, you're just not 29.

Judi - Good work out there!  If I have GI issues after a run, I know that I need to drink a lot more water.  A lot more.   I normally drink 2+ liters of water a day plus coffee, etc. so I go into my runs well hydradate but I think that sometimes I subconsiously want to avoid sloshy stomach so don't drink enough during the run.  Or soemthing like that.

Jo - Sorry about your wrist!  I once broke my finger while falling in the parking lot *after* the ride.  :-/

Erin - Thanks for the elliptilinks!

Jonathan TN - Welcome back!

Tom - I'm glad that you enjoyed your ride this weekend!

I've been doing BikeMS New Bern since 2008 after doing the Myrtle Beach ride for three years, twice two the beach and once at the beach and then that ride moved to Greenville so I was out.  At any rate, that's nine BikeMS rides done.

CONGRATULATIONS NYNY!!!

I loved the pics. Do you seriously ride for a beer team? How did I not know this/was not common knowledge among Manatees? Or am I just DFL as usual?

I have no opinion on the DL or not, I just hope everyone heals and strengthens up well!
