15step - 2010-12-01 2:28 PM So I don't know if it is too early to start thinking of this, but where is everyone staying? It looks like a lot of hotels are either crazy expensive or already booked. Has anyone used other options before, like renting a house with a bunch of people or getting an RV?

We booked a house thru http://cdaapp.cdagetaway.com/ The woman who runs it is very nice and can help you find a house based on where you want to be and how much you want to spend.

She is great.  I rented from her in 2007.

Gearing:  so what is the suggested front/rear combo for CdA?  Coming from the flatlands I'm wondering if we might need to gear it down a bit.

Check page 38 of this thread, great info there.

Well, pulled the trigger on a used compact crank on ebay.
$180 buck for sram red 50-34.
I'm going to stick with my 12-25 that's on the bike for now.  I would like to see how I do on my local climbs.
Have thought about an 11-26 for a little wider range.

Running a marathon a week from today.
My "anything slower is a failure" goal is 4:00.
My "very happy" goal is 3:50
My "holy crap" goal is 3:45.

We'll see...

While I understand all of that from a mechanical point of view I have little knowledge how it relates to effort (again, our biggest hills around here are bridges )

I have a 50/34 - 27/12 and the wife has a 50/34 - 24/12.

I'm 6'4", 205.  She's 5'4" 120.  Sound good for a couple of Florid flatlanders?  Or should we be looking for something else like an 28/11?  I'm a bit concerned about her 24/12.

With your build I think that's a good setup.  You may spin out on some of the downhills but that's ok on this course.

For your wife's bike - is she riding on 700 or 650 wheels?

Is there a rule or guidelines for how much or when to ride in aero position?   I noticed that the rider in the Cd'A Real Rides DVD does not ride in aero very much.  What are your thoghts?

The guideline is as much as you possibly can. If a rider can handle it, ideally you would only come up to use the brakes or for sharp turns. The best time to take breaks otherwise is going up hills. It's a lot more comfortable to sit up, but for the fastest time stay in aero all you can handle.

Not really knowing what kind of a rider she is, I think it'd be good insurance to get another cassette.  Shimano 105 or Ultegra are not too expensive, and Performance Bike has a 15% off deal today:

http://www.performancebike.com/bikes//Product_10052_10551_1091275_-1___

I'd lean toward the 12-27 but bring both.  You guys can always preview the hills in CdA when you arrive and decide on the cassette right before the race.

Edit: 105 and Dura-Ace have a 12-27.  Ultegra has an 11-28 instead.  Don't ask me why.

Thanks.  I think I'll get her the 12-27.  I'd rather he spin out on the downhills than struggle on the uphills.

Ok, I am terrible about using the logs here, but am sure to log on my daily calendar at work.  So here's my belated November totals (I really am going to try harder to use the logs here, promise!)

Bike: 306 miles outside, 20 hours on a trainer (about 33 hours or so total)

Swim: 15,000 yards

Averaging 9.5 hours per week

Can't wait for next week when I get to start running again!  Even with lots of bike time I go crazy if I can't run

Just this morning, I booked Thursday to Tuesday at the Red Lion in Post Falls.  $120ish a night, on the Spokane River, 15 minutes from downtown CdA, double queen bed with river view.  I've done the multi-thousand $$ rental right by race site before... which is very cool with the ironman vibe everywhere... but going more low key this time (no wait at restaurants, available parking, etc).

Josh- this is where I stayed with my friend that raced this year.  It's nice, quiet, and has a great view. We had no trouble getting in/out of CdA for the race at all either.  It's a good choice.

For any of you using the Be Iron Fit competitive plan - I have the first 10 weeks entered into a Google calendar.  Drop me a pm with a gmail address if you're interested and I'll share it with you.  We're on week #2 right now.

I know you can add a custom plan to BT but this lets me set up daily notifications and I can overlay it with my work calendar to see where I have conflicts.

Will neo cap and socks be legal?

If the water temp is below 65 F, WTC allows neoprene booties.

i have a quick question for those who have done IMCDA before...How easy/hard is it for family and friends to track you as you progress though the race?  Can it be done by lap top, or is there some other ways to do this?
I have three kids and the 2 year old has the attention span of a.... two year old, and mimics Houdini every chance she gets.   I am having nightmares about my wife trying to entertain the kids for 11-12 hours.

You sound like an ideal candidate for: http://www.myathletegps.com/

They are at every ironman I believe.  Reserve in advance.

CdA is a spectator friendly course because of it's multi-loop format and the way it goes through town... so your family will have plenty of opportunity to see you, but that device will let them know when (approximately) you'll be coming through.  I've never used it but feedback has been positive from those I know that have.
