Goofy Challenge done!

Thanks everyone for the encouragement before I went to Orlando to run the Walt Disney World Half and Full marathons AKA The Goofy Challenge.   The events were awesome and capped off a great year of training for me.

It really is amazing how adding swimming and biking to my regular training routines has helped my running improve.  I was able to complete both races with no injuries.  Recovery from both was very easy, too.  The only issue I had was that I picked up a mild respiratory tract infection after the marathon, but it's only a mild discomfort.

Congrats on finishing the Goofy!  I'd like to try the half some day, but the Goofy is not for me (not a full marathoner).  Hope you feel better soon.

So I made it to the gym yesterday for a bike ride and swim.  I had to convince myself to get in the pool after my ride.  I don't know why I fight the swim so much.  It felt good once I got in and I actually do enjoy swimming (even if I am slow at itSmile).

Today I've got a long run on the schedule - 9-10 miles, probably on the TM.

Hope everyone's having a great weekend!

ICEMANSCOTT:  thanks, I never realized that the aero position also helps save your running muscles.  That is good to know.  I also didn't realize there were anything but Shimano components Wink

ECPASOS:  Glad to hear that at that price point you can get aluminum and carbon and you obviously had no issues not having at least 105/Rival components.

Also, congrats on Goofy.  I've run the marathon and the half, but never had the guts to try Goofy.  Great race!

I ran today!! I'm back! WOO HOO! It was just 2.44, didn't want to overdo, but it was SO much better than I feared! After 15 days of sickness... whew!! I have my first half on 2/20 and I need to be ready. I think my goals will have to change a bit for the race though. I didn't plan on a 2 week layoff.

Compression socks first time today...love them. No shin pain!

Swam into the nicest triathlete this morning!  I was heading out to  my lake (AKA Blue Lake) for my weekly winter swim.  When we pulled up I could see there were many cars, which is rare. This lake is in the middle of the desert.  I figured they were scuba divers as Blue Lake is a bit of a mecca for divers in NV, UT, ID because of it's warm temps (natural fed spring)  I was a little crabby at first, because, well, it's MINE! (Laughing)  Anyhow, get out to the lake and find out it was a certification class, blah blah.  I could see where they were diving so I starting swimming the perimenter in the opposite direction.  I was just about back to the start when holy crap there is someone right there!!! I startled and screamed, the diver hit the surface laughing as well as well as aplogizing.  Anyway, we got to talking while treading and it turns out he is a seasoned triathlete who has done IM Boise 70.3 a few times, which is the HIM I'm training for.  He figured I must be training--why else would someone be out there just swimming?!  He was nice enough to do a shallow dive and watch me swim, gave me some great feedback.  Good times in the middle of the desert in my small little lake!

Great story... Thanks for sharing.  Seems like since I started running, everywhere I go I run into runners and triathletes.

2.5 hours on the computrainer Ironman Wisconsin real vid @ 70% plus @ 90 rpm.  Found a 14% grade, several 10s, some long 5- 7s.

Then 2050 yards in the pool.  Smoother stroke, better kick since I added a 3rd workout.

Y'all have a great week.

Sounds like a great workout.  Are you planning any trips to Madison to ride the course before the race?

IN 2005 I weighed 400 pounds and couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without feeling like I was dying.  It's all starting where you are and making progress bit by bit. You will do it!

As for smoking, my suggestion is you don't beat yourself up about it.  That only adds to the frustration, negative thinking, low feeling of self worth that leads one to light up in the first place. "I am a non smoker, I don't smoke, no thanks not for me, I have too much to live for, I have a race to get ready for, I have tri gear to buy so I need the money for other things..." Start over!

Oh and yes, will head to Madison a few time to do the course in real life.  That is one of the reasons I chose Madison over Louisville or Florida.   Close enough to go practice.  Plus Vision Quest leads rides there.  There are a lot of VQ athletes who do it.

Here is a suggestion.  I am not a smoker, never have been, but my Mom was my whole life.  She went to do the accupuncture to stop, and has not even wanted a ciggaret since she left the appoinment that day.  I have also spoken to several others since that have had the same success with accupunture (it only takes about 10 minutes and is not all that costly).  Just an idea.

Lynne - Right there with you girl.  Been beating myself up the last couple of days.  I stopped that yesterday and it seems to be going better.  I'm letting myself have 4 a day for the next two weeks and then taking one away.  I don't actually smoke  the whole cigarette at once, just a few drags and then put it out.  It's really helping reduce the intake of nicotine without all the withdrawal effects.  Each person is different and you have to find out what works for you.  Just keep trying.  We'll do this together.

Josh - Very interesting idea about the acupuncture ..... My mother-in-law is an acupuncture veterinarian (ya weird) might have to talk to her.  Thanks for another path to think about.

Hi guys...don't laugh but I must get this off my chest.  I was just rereading my story post and to my absolute horror realized I used the contraction 'it's' when I clearly needed the possessive 'its'.  Ok, I feel better now that I've corrected myself.

Another question!  (imagine that!)  My workout plan is designed around periodization.  I was looking ahead at my training this week and thought "that's it?"  My workouts are 1/4 to 1/2 of what I've been doing for two weeks.  Someone please tell me to trust this.  Would it be bad to add in any other cardio type work that doesn't involve swim/bike/run after I've completed my tri specific training?  Or, am I already a head case, worrying about lost fitness when this should be a good backing off period.

Trust it!  The last two cycles before your race, you'll be looking forward to these "rest weeks."  Think of this week as a chance to catch up on some "life" stuff.  Go on a date with the hubby.  Get the pets to the vet.  Do some of the other things that you won't find time to do during your "big weeks."

Being angry with yourself works for you, the smoker, because it's easy to smoke when you hate yourself. I think you are an athlete, not a smoker.... am I right? Believe it. Throw them out, start again. Get on your bike, in the pool... lace up your shoes.

2 things helped me quit smoking.
1st was the wife, she hated the smell so I wasn't allowed to smoke inside the house or car and had to wash hands and brush teeth after every cigarette when she was around.

2nd I would buy a pack of cigarettes, smoke a few and get mad at myself because I was trying to quit, so them, I would throw them out. pass a day or two, I would buy another pack and again, after a couple of cigarettes I throw them out again. I become a very expensive habit and I ended up quitting for good.

I also heard stories of people that quit with acupuncture it is worth a try.

Chantrix is having great results here. Anti depressant. Some say it's like turning off a switch. I quit with hypnosis.  You have to wanna and believe it will work but I went from 5 packs a day to none without withdrawals.  That will be 23 years ago 4/4.

Stick with it.  Death is no way to quit.
