It all depends on where you seed yourself. If you seed yourself too far forward you will get swam over. I've had some ok swims there. There is always contact but we're all wearing big rubbery life jackets essentially. With a wetsuit the contact doesn't bother me that much. If you are bothered by contact I'd start towards the back. If you are an okay swimmer though you will eventually swim up to the back of the pack anyway and it will be chaos from there. The worst part no matter what is the first turn buoy. I've swam 1:17 and 1:10 there and both times the first turn buoy was insane. I don't know why everyone can swim freestyle no problem to the buoy and then all of the sudden forget how and only breast stroke. Drives me crazy! Keep swimming everyone and it won't be so hectic. It's looks as though I've gone off on a tangent so I'll just wrap it up. If your completely uncomfortable swimming with contact then feel free to wait. Just know that MOST people are pretty curtious and not trying to drown you.

Unless of course you are a front of the pack swimmer. Then you better swim straight or you'll be leading the rest of us in the wrong direction.

HA HA HA

That won't be me.  I'm planning on waiting a minute or two after the pack gets in to get in myself.  A calmer swim is worth a few minutes lost to me.

Ummm yeah a minute or so won't hurt me..... those you tube videos of previous starts are crazy looking

i sent my buddy one of the swim start you tube videos.  he's freaking out.  Innocent  he's not a strong swimmer.  the devil made me do it.

i agree with Scott.  I've swam 1:00 and 1:03 at CDA. If you're not a good swimmer, don't go to the front.  also, a lot of weaker swimmers might be thinking to start far right.  If I were a weaker swimmer, i would go middle left and seed myself accordingly. be fairly defensive and watch your surroundings.  watch for the frog kickers.  deadly.  the first turn is terrible for everyone.  once you make the second turn towards the beach, it really smooths out.  the second lap is pretty much uneventful.  just relax and continue to breathe.  the swim will be over before you know it and then the real fun begins.

PS.  for whatever reason, the CDA swim always seem slower.  does anyone know why?  chop in the lake?  slightly long?  point of reference, i was 57:30 in Lake Placid.

I have had my best luck starting at the front and on the outside.  By the time you hit the turn mark, you've passed people slower than you and are behind the people faster than you (generally speaking).  As stated above, the worst thing you can do is catch up to someone using breast stroke kick.  I just about had to quit from getting kicked straight in the nose.

Depends on the year, but there can still be quite a bit of snow run-off coming through the lake at race time.  The outlet for the lake into the Spokane River is only about 1/2 mile down the beach from the start so some years there's a noticable current.  In 2008 it felt like I came almost to a dead stop after I rounded the first buoy because of the current.  I'd say that may be the reason you're feeling slower here.

I did my longest run today. Once again it was 90 degrees. This is crazyfor northern Michigan. I cried when I was done. Why? Pride, happyTo be done with my longest hours, exhaustion. Who knows but I savoredevery bite of my peanut butter cookie and sip of chocolate milk after.

I try to get through transitions as quickly as possible.  My mantra for an IM race is to just keep moving forward, always.  I know some folks who try to relax a bit in transition, especially T2 but to me it seems harder to get going again than just to keep moving.  T1 is usually slowest, but for my last IM I would have been under 6 minutes except I forgot my Endurolytes in my bag and T2 was under 3 minutes.  Whatever works for you though.  If a more leisurely transition helps you feel better before moving on, by all means take some extra time.

I agree with everyone to get through quickly, but make sure you go through your checklist in your head. Last thing you want to do is forget something because you are worried about time. Also, sometimes the race dictates your time. At Louisville I was around 4-5 min each, but that was a TT swim start. At Florida last year I came out of the water in 1:17 MOP and there was literally not one spot to stand and empty my T1 bag. I ended up just standing right in front of someone. It was also a decent run to get to transition. On top of that it was 36 degrees outside so a lot of people were changing clothes. Ended up taking me 15 minutes to get through T1. It was a mess. The changing area was way to small. Not sure how CDA will be, but hopefully better.

I'm feeling 75% excited, 25% nervous right now.  Nailed my longest run on Wed and had a great ride last night.  It just feels like I should have a few more huge weeks to prepare.

However, I'm EXHAUSTED!  I feel like I could crawl under my desk to take a nap right now.  Anyone else?  I'm not sleeping 8 hours every night, but overall I'm averaging about 8.

I am beat, and nursing a slight quad injury on top of it all, only been able to swim the past couple days.  I don't get 8 hours of sleep ever, and getting even less than normal right now, and it it's catching up to me.  Hoping this long weekend will help me get rejuvenated.

On the plus side my buddy has a lake place nearby and the water is 60+, going up there right after work today for an hour swim and again on Monday for hopefully a 2+ miler.

Oh yeah, I am about 75% nervous!
