OK - I did another drive by reading - you guys are SO sososo effing funny!!  Very entertaining last couple pages!  Thanks for that!

But one thing Salt said (something about Yanti living in a pink house with a red door and the resulting explosion of Salt's head and her asking if Yanti knew what kind of work she was in...) got me thinking.  I wonder what all of our pod members do to make bacon?  Can we share that with each other?  I know some of you know each other from way back - but as a young manatee, i don't know

I'll share - I'm a druggist.  (i love telling old people that - they think it's so cute(aka clinical pharmacist in a small hospital)

Hope all is well crew - I'm looking forward to getting to know you all better!!

I'm a Post Doc in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at a University Medical Hospital.  I work on Pulmonary Hypertension trying to identify the genes that change in the course of the disease and trying to find drugs to help the heart and reverse the disease.

That's rad!  Good work!

x2!  Jen that has got to be a fascinating field to work in.  I love science.

I don't do anything.    I am a SAHM.  I went back to school and finished my bachelors degree (GO UCONN!!) but with the special needs of my middle son, I cannot work until he's stable.  Sooooo, I manage his care (take him to a million appts a week) and fight for his educational needs to be met and taxi my other two kids to their activities and friends.  It really is a full time job.  I don't know how parents work full time and have kids too.  It's a lot to balance.

ETA:  Tracy, I love our pharmacist.  Really, she's is amazing and I don't know what I'd do without her.  Pharmacists are live savers.

My running friend is a special needs teacher. I have learned just a ton from her venting on our runs (mainly about the broken education system, lack of funding and support for special needs programs)

She's actually the same friend that was going to take that job is Thailand but has decided to take a different job here in Seattle which, selfishly I am happy about.

Does this seem odd to anyone else?  This is the last two weeks of my program (BT beginner half).  Next week, I am running only once.  (Well, I guess according to the program, the week is M-Sun, so I am running twice, but still).  Would you throw another run or two in there, even shorties?  For the record, I will likely be following the biking for next week, but still swimming 3 times, M-W-F.

Well...it is a beginner plan, meaning something more along the lines of "just enough to get you across the line"

I wouldn't hesitate to be a little flexible and if you think you need more of something, by all means. Just make sure you are being honest with yourself.

You said the last two weeks right? I'm guessing it's tapering you down. Don't underestimate the value of the taper.

Oh, don't worry, I am absolutely looking forward to the taper.  It's the only thing that is going to get me through the last long bike tomorrow .  Just felt it odd that there is a week between runs (I did my last long run last night).

For whatnit's worth,Fink's " just finish" plan has the following run workouts for the same 2 weeks:Tues:1:00 z2We'd: :15 z2 run after bikeSun: 1:30z1-2The second week is the same except there is no Sunday run ( except in the race), but there is. :15 ez Saturday run.Finks overall plan is for a140.6, the plan includes racing a half and these are the weeks leading to that race. I don't know if the fact that the half is not the focus of the plan has any bearing on whether or not this would be considered a normal workout plan for the weeks in question. I am using Fink's competitive/ intermediate plan for my half, so I hope so!Sorry if the formatting is off, I'm using the iPad and sometimes there are issues.

I'm reading over my race breifing and got an amazing visual.

It states:

The tunnel is only 0.4 miles from the start and if you all try to run through it at exactly the same time
you’ll get stuck, so to spread you all out a bit we have a narrow starting line

What effort are your runs on the final week? I think that may be the difference.

FWIW, two weeks out from my last HIM, I had a brick on Sunday (1 hour bike, 1:40 run), swim Monday, run (35 min with strides) and swim Tuesday, brick (45 ride, 15 run) Wednesday, ride Thursday, off Friday, easy ride and a swim on Saturday.

Then the last week was:  Sunday, run 40 minutes; Monday off; Tuesday short easy brick (ride 30, run 8); Wed easy spin and short swim; Thursday easy super short brick (spin 15, run 5); Friday off; Saturday race.

Thanks for all the replies.  The last week calls for short, race pace runs, so you may be right.  I may throw in a couple easy runs next week, just to keep my feet aware...

Great photo!  How long is the tunnel?  Could be annoying to be be stuck behind someone/a group.  Guess if it's dark, no one will be able to see your number if someone around you should happen to go down...Surprised

In my opinion, the tapers on most stock tri plans are crap. It's a stock plan. It'll prepare the large middle section of a bunch of average triathletes to finish X distance. That's it.

Swim, bike, and run tapers should all be different. Most tapers are way too long.

That said ... two weeks out, there's almost nothing you can do to improve your fitness and a lot you can do to wreck it. Taper drops volume but should bring all of your efforts to race-pace/intensity. For a HIM the run taper should be about two weeks; bike taper a little less, maybe 10 days; and honestly swim doesn't need to be tapered at all but to be on the safe side drop the volume (but maybe even add frequency) the last week.

Do whatever you need to do to keep your body turning its limbs over in the exact manner you wish them to do in the race, but just barely. If in doubt, do less.

ebshot - 2012-07-13 2:32 AM Well, we are home from the race.  Alex was nervous and it showed.  She started out waaaaayyy too fast and then crashed and burnt.  She had a mini meltdown but we had a heart to heart (me telling her to HTFU...yes really.  Of course this was after I had encouraged her for 20 minutes prior) and she finished strong.

She took 3rd place in her AG and is talking about the next one!

Well done Alex (and Erica).

It states:

The tunnel is only 0.4 miles from the start and if you all try to run through it at exactly the same time
you’ll get stuck, so to spread you all out a bit we have a narrow starting line

Awesome! You better be right in the front and kick it through there fast! You're bringing a head lamp?

ebshot - 2012-07-13 2:32 AM Well, we are home from the race.

Yes, beautiful.  I love the salsa, too.

I need Manatee wisdom! I posted this in CoJ and then realized you guys are definitely smarter. Okay, that's not saying much, considering CoJ, but you know what I mean, hopefully.

I need to bring a housewarming gift to a party tomorrow. I'm terrible at this kind of stuff (although individuals love the gifts I give for personal things like birthdays, I'm really foggy on specific things like ... um ... housewarming gifts). Good triathlete friend of mine, guy piglet, married with a cute kid, is having a new house party tomorrow ...

Bottle of wine?

He's also an avid diver, but what difference does that make?

Maybe I could bring something for his little girl? I mean, nobody's going to think of bringing her a present ...

AAAAAH help, please, thank you.
