I used to think the same thing. But I have been getting closer as the training continues.

HOWEVER, like I said, it really depends on who shows up to the race..... I have been CRUSHED by the field in certain races and been solid MOP. But the same time on the same course a year later would take a podium spot - go figure.

Well, there's the fact that I'm 33. So I'm solidly in the WTF finishing time age group. Plus I don't know that I want it badly enough to dedicate the time for a podium finish. I'm not saying I'm incapable - I'm saying the competition in my age group is fiercer than I am probably willing to prepare for.

Same here, 32. But sometimes the stars do all align ... it really isn't something you can prepare for. You can nudge the likelihood, that's all.

Although I will say if you do enough tris--particularly small local ones--and can manage to lay down some solid MOP times, over the course of a few years, you'll probably eventually podium.

I agree with Triaya....  The race before last was won by a 40-44 AGer.  So the competition is strong from about 20-50 years in age IMO.  Anyone in that range can win.  So it depends on who wants to race that day.

I'm gonna be in a new AG soon

HOWEVER, it'll get me out of the one with all the college cross country runners.

I find being in the 40-44 AG SUCKS!!!!!

FIRST, it makes me feel old...

SECOND, the group is HUGE.  There are a LOT of 40+ racers.....

THIRD, those Mo Fos are FAST.  WTF?  I would rather race 35-39 any day based on the last 3-4 races....

I have heard a lot of coaches say that the 40+ group does so well because of their maturity level and the fact that theey understand that you don't have to lead wire to wire.  They understand pacing and don't chase themseelves out at the beginning.  Don't know if that is true or not - especially in the longer events - but I have heard it said many times.

I might end up being one of those guys once I know how to pace. When my bodyfat drops I tend to be around 205 of mostly muscle. It's probably a better chance than the 33 group with guys 75lb lighter than me.

Ha ha ha ... at one tri, my age group was F 31-50. That's gotta be the strangest grouping I've ever seen (and they changed it specifically after the results came in).

Not that small a tri, either ... 300 finishers. There were 15 people in my 30-39 AG ... in which I came third.

WAH!
